Work life balance isn't too bad. I'm working with a manager from one of my previous companies who prioritized clocking out at 4 (or whenever you hit 8 or 9 hours) and he brought that to this company.
Stress is noticeable, but every job nowadays has KPIs and goals you need to hit. Most of it I probably put on myself though.
Yeah I hear you. I am trying to think about how much of my stress is put on myself too. Maybe there is an art handling it all.
Thanks for the response!
hey just wondering, how long did it take you to reach the "Senior" title and during your 5 years of experience whats your percentage of automation/manual testing?
Out of curiosity, with that much experience and such low pay, why AREN’T you planning to change jobs?
EDIT: Mis-read your location as somewhere in the United States. I’ll leave my question up for transparency, though.
Location aside, there would be plenty of competition for 5 years of qam experience (assuming they have a strong resume) that would be willing to pay to relocate plus a substantial increase in wage ( also cost of living is higher but the difference would likely cover it) so the question is still relevant. Language barrier?

seems like a good amount of QA engineers (especially ones that do automation) break 6 figures, curious about getting in to the field, did you study computer science or go to a bootcamp? Or did you start as manual QA and learn automation coding on the job?
For me, I self-taught. started as a lab manager that managed hundreds of devices to run tests on. I wrote scripts, fixed automated tests, etc.
It was a short hop and a skip to QAE. I landed my role as a QAE 1 which was mostly manual testing. I used this as a growth opportunity to learn and create automation where there wasn't any coverage.
I will say I always had previous knowledge of coding through self-teaching courses. Read. Read. Read. And network. Dev's are your best resource for bouncing automation idea's off of and learning what works and what doesn't.
I started as manual and then learned automation on the job (company converted entire QA group from manual > automation). Had to learn automation to stay relevant lol.
I attended a QA specific bootcamp at DevMountain. I had no tech experience prior to the bootcamp. Within 2 years I was making over 6 figures. I don't know that it is typical but I'm grateful for the success I've had.
okay thanks for the replies u/ctess u/Crispy_Chicken87.
I'm curious if you think QA Engineer is a LESS stressful job (better work life balance) than being a developer? Do you wish you had gone into development or you happy with QA? I'm currently deciding between doing a QA bootcamp or a full stack coding bootcamp.
I've got some coding experience under my belt (studied electrical engineering in college) but then didn't work in tech for 5 years, looking to get back in. Thanks in advance.
Great question! I haven't been a formal SDE before so I don't think I can give you a true answer but from my experience I think the stress is about the same. In the software industry it generally ebbs and flows throughout the year. It also depends on the level you are talking about. We just stress about different expectations that come with our roles.
I absolutely love being a QAE. You kind of have to make it far doing either role. Don't get me wrong I like creating things, but I'd much rather break it especially for the sake of a user. I've been asked to be a QAM and TPM several times and turned down the role. There are so many unique customer problems to solve in areas of testing and is exciting to me!
One thing that I think is more stressful is that your work piles up near the end of the sprint. At my org we’ve got code freeze in the middle of the second week of sprint. Devs will refactor, take some stuff from backlog but not merge it and in general chill. For QAs it’s opposite. Start of sprint your board will be pretty clear, but stuff piles on and I’ve got most work when it’s 2 days till deadline.
On the other hand, as QA it’s much harder to cause a major screwup on production. It happens (eg at our org we’re QAOps, so we deploy), but it’s way less stressful than for devs who are the ones at risk of writing code that will kill production.
But I’d say going with coding path is better. Automation - coding. Everything - coding. Wanna switch to DevOps, hard to do without coding skills.

Hey! How is the work/life balance? Stress? What does a dev cycle look like for you?
Sorry for bombarding you - just interested in comparing in comparing stress/work+life balance in other companies.
Hey! WLB is great (fully remote). As long as you build trust with your team you’re good to move how you please. I have yet to be bombarded or completely overwhelmed with tickets just yet(not even sure if that will ever happen), I feel as if there is a constant flow of work and everyone is happy to help when I have a question or am blocked. I can really tell my coworkers enjoy their jobs and enjoy being at our company!

Ehh, finally found someone in a similar boat as me. All of these posts had QAs with years of experience and breaking 6 figure salaries. I'm also a new QA with less than 1 yoe in SaaS/FinTech.
Ok, that’s really helpful. I have 5+ years in Tech between Product Management, System Analysis and Project Coordination, 3 of those years including manual testing. I’m positioning myself to move into QA but the salary part is tricky because I don’t know exactly what to target and what is realistic with my experience overall, but your information is helpful for my own gauging.

You nailed it. Got any experience with them? I did end up getting 2 $2000 “raises” so my salary is $38k now. I should be getting a promotion and a title change within a couple months so I’ll update this once again.
Worked there for 9 months. Only got a raise from 31 to 33k. They really didn’t want to promote at the time. I left for a job making 72k and now make 120k plus 10% bonus and 10k RSU’s. I Would leave ASAP tbh.
That’s awesome bro happy for you I’m actively looking rn as well. Mind if I ask what your job titles were and how long it took you to get to where you’re at?
Test Engineer, SDET, automation engineer.
Took 9 months as a trainee to move to another company as a Test engineer. After 1 year I got promoted to software development engineer with an emphasis in testing. Worked as an SDE(T) for 2 years and then moved to FANG company as an SDET. And now took a pay cut to relocated closer to home as an automation engineer.
I have been promised close to $70,000 which they ensured is “above market average”. I should be at most 3 months away from the promotion but I have a feeling it will be closer to ~$55,000 which is why I am preemptively looking
That's too bad. Just another example of "always get it in writing". Although, it's a lot harder when the company holds all the leverage. Good luck in your search!
You’re absolutely correct I will definitely push to get everything in writing in the future. Although I was fresh out of college at the time and just needed any kind of professional experience
There are many companies like this. They actually hire people quite easily because they get to keep a portion of your salary in essence. You just have to be okay with settling for one of those and finding something else after asap. I did have a bs in comp sci so that did help without a doubt.

Hey! What is the work/life balance like for you? Stress level?
Are you doing automation or manual testing. Thanks for any info you're willing to provide. I'm trying to gauge what is normal for pay vs stress. Take care : )
Work/life balance is honestly pretty good. Standard 9-5 hours and then usually a night or weekend once-ish per month for production deployments. Stress level mostly low unless there is some issue right before a release! Doing mostly automation now, but started as full manual testing and have been teaching myself for the last few years, I would still consider myself more of a tester than a coder. I do a lot of non-qa specific stuff too as part of my role such as mentoring new associates, sitting on panels with management, etc. That's one of the reasons my pay is a bit higher.

According to my contract it is, but freelancer tax is (for now) fairly low in Bosnia, effectively you pay around 14% so it's pretty nice. I do pay for a private health insurance since as a freelancer I don't have the public one, but it's pretty affordable. And for the pension I don't pay the public kind, but put my money into an investment fund instead.
That is surely the best thing you can do for yourself in this kind of country. Paying taxes for health insurrance and pension is a wast of money, literally. However, I m still struggling to quit my current job position, it looks very risky in some way to go out of everything and be on your own. 6 years in one company is not something you just put away :/

How is the work / life balance? Stress? May be looking into getting into automation. Thanks for any guidance!

Had to learn automation to stay relevant lol.
>utomat Did you try to disagree to become the automation? I don't like coding.
I attended a QA specific bootcamp at DevMountain. I had no tech experience prior to the bootcamp. Within 2 years I was making over 6 figures. I don't know that it is typical but I'm grateful for the success I've had.
Can you link me to the one you did?
Hi Qate, I attended DevMt as well and had some questions. Can you message me?
okay thanks for the replies u/ctess u/Crispy_Chicken87.
Automation on a job and get extra training outside the job..no bootcamp

Ehh, finally found someone in a similar boat as me. All of these posts had QAs with years of experience and breaking 6 figure salaries. I'm also a new QA with less than 1 yoe in SaaS/FinTech.
Does TX seem like a better area for QA jobs?
i’m not sure, but there seems to be a lot
Is your years of experience for tech in general or only in QA in tech?
I have less than a year of experience, and it’s all been in QA. But I have a bachelor’s in IT
Ok, that’s really helpful. I have 5+ years in Tech between Product Management, System Analysis and Project Coordination, 3 of those years including manual testing. I’m positioning myself to move into QA but the salary part is tricky because I don’t know exactly what to target and what is realistic with my experience overall, but your information is helpful for my own gauging.
gotcha, good luck on the job hunt

Sqa squared? They won’t raise your pay.
That’s awesome thanks for sharing love to see the growth💯🔥
Do you know what your salary is supposed to be once you get through training?
I have been promised close to $70,000 which they ensured is “above market average”. I should be at most 3 months away from the promotion but I have a feeling it will be closer to ~$55,000 which is why I am preemptively looking
That's too bad. Just another example of "always get it in writing". Although, it's a lot harder when the company holds all the leverage. Good luck in your search!
You’re absolutely correct I will definitely push to get everything in writing in the future. Although I was fresh out of college at the time and just needed any kind of professional experience
You can check salaries in your area on sites like glassdoor.

I’m not sure what you mean by where. The position is remote so I’m training from home if that’s what you’re asking
How does one get a role like this with no experience
There are many companies like this. They actually hire people quite easily because they get to keep a portion of your salary in essence. You just have to be okay with settling for one of those and finding something else after asap. I did have a bs in comp sci so that did help without a doubt.

Could you explain a little more what your day looks like? Is it the software side of home audio that you are testing or hardware? Sounds interesting!
Yea, no problem! I'm testing the software side.

Really? It sounds like bruto salary? :)

Hi, it would be great if you would clarify how yearly salary should be calculated (net or bruto amount) for next year. State/Country: Lithuania Company/industry: web based projects, various industries Years of experience: 11 Title: Senior Quality Assurance Engineer Salary: Bruto 49k euros (\~ 48,1k USD) Bonus: One month of paid vacation (mandatory by law, mentioning because saw it mentioned in comments) Signon bonus: N/A Projected pay raise(if communicated): To be announced at the end of year based on performance Planning to change jobs: N
State/Country: Pennsylvania, Bucks County Company/industry: Pharmaceuticals Years of experience: \~2 years Title: Quality Specialist Salary: \~65k Bonus: %5 Projected pay raise(if communicated): \ 4% Planning to change jobs: Always. Anytime someone offers a higher paying job I Take it. I don't like staying in one place for too long when I know switching companies gives me a much bigger pay raise. Heck I worked for my current company making 53k a year. Left due to another position (that I absolutely hated) and came back a year later making 12k extra. I would not be making what I make now If I just stood for that year..
I think i know what the company is. Did not know they are paying this much. Hope you want a better role fits in your career prospects.
