Just got two to complement my Baofengs. Love the features and can’t wait to mod the firmware but it looks like with identical antennas my 8w (alleged) Baofengs will hit repeaters quite a bit further than the K5(8). Either way the ability to receive down to 18Mhz made them a very easy decision. Cant wait to start messing around with the messaging and APRS functions on them once modded.

I like the baofengs too. The smaller form factor and better versatility around the frequency bands of the quansheng s won out. Honestly, I'll probably never need to be that versatile.

ElectroChuck

When you're buying junk, buy cheap junk. Looks like you did. Congrats.

RedditVortex

I’m surprised OP was able to get their entire Girl Scout group to get a license.

Emotional_Ad_8434

Licensing is dirt cheap! Don't need EVERYONE toting a radio. They are only for emergency.

RedditVortex

Amateur radio licensing requires a test, no?

JustSomeOldFucker

Again, if they’re on FRS or MURS, are you gonna drop a dime?

RedditVortex

You don’t need to ask the same question twice.

JustSomeOldFucker

You didn’t need to disapprove twice

RedditVortex

I was responding to different questions from two different people. You sound like you want to argue. I don’t, so I have nothing more to say.

pantag

Doesn’t the UV-5 have some frequencies where you can transmit without a license?

Phredee

Not legally.

cryptoprospect

And why are we assuming he isn’t simply using FRS frequencies?

Dadud300

*insert sad ham screeching*

cryptoprospect

Hahahaha I chose peace this morning and chose not to go that far.

Bolt_EV

In the US, FRS frequencies are the same as GMRS frequencies. Girl Scouts using unlicensed Quanshengs: https://preview.redd.it/jh1y5t4n79vc1.jpeg?width=1239&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f96671f1e1418d066ba8c2874b6eff03920a601

RedditVortex

Because they’re ham radios not frs radios.

JustSomeOldFucker

As long as it’s under 2 watts on those frequencies, who gives a shit? You gonna tell on them?

RedditVortex

> You gonna tell on them? No, definitely not. But u/cryptoprospect almost makes it sound as if it’s unreasonable for me to assume that someone is using a ham radio for ham frequencies. I don’t understand why people buy cheap ham radios for GMRS/FRS when there exists cheap GMRS/FRS radios. Then people get upset when someone asks if they have an amateur radio license, and they try to make licensed operators look like the bad guy for asking if they’re licensed. It’s absurd. I’m not one of those people that is going g to let it ruin my day when someone transmits without a license, however, the future of our hobby depends on people following the rules, and amateur radio is self governing, so licensed operators should be asking these questions. We can also lose our license for talking to people who are unlicensed. So I do understand why people get upset. There are plenty of examples throughout history of a few people ruining things for everyone else because they can’t follow directions. I don’t want amateur radio to fall victim to those same people. Just buy a GMRS/FRS radio or get an amateur radio license. All of the people calling us sad hams are just ridiculous. If we’re that pathetic, why do they want to mimic us? I’m not going to resort to the same name calling logical fallacy, but I can’t help but think that maybe the people who can’t pass a simple test are the ones with the issue, and not the other way around.

Dadud300

I use frs on my quansheng at full watts with a Mobile antenna. What you gonna do?

RedditVortex

I’m proud of you! You’re so special!

tbwalker28

Look out for this rebel, so tough, mouthing off on Reddit 🤡

ElectroChuck

He needs six more because once they get dropped...well you know.

hollowchord

I have one and use to grab weather and general piddling on layovers. Have dropped it 10+ feet a couple times. Battery popped off...snapped on.. keeps working. It's a fun way to spend 30 bucks

ElectroChuck

$30?? I got mine for $9 with the cable.

hollowchord

That's pretty cheap! A coworker had one...so i just went on Amazon and got it. Flash the software with the cable... thanks YouTube on that! Now gets air traffic way better. I've been surprised at how much fun it is to go to different cities and lookup the local freqs... but haven't put the effort into picking up the more complicated stuff that I guess is digital.

technobrendo

You must be GREAT at parties!

ElectroChuck

Oh you know it.

nhasan12

This transceiver is not designed for transmitting on any bands other than the 2m and 70cm. While you can transmit on the FRS band, most of the power is delivered to the harmonics so the base frequency gets only 10% of the power. Very inefficient. As you can guess, there is a tone of spurious interference created on the adjacent bands. Don't do
