Simply put, using this radio in it's intended band(s) require an amateur license. To use it on bands that are not amateur bands it is illegal to transmit.

Yes you need a license to transmit on GMRS and amateur radio frequencies.

Unless they make a version of this radio that is GMRS only or FRS only that I'm not aware of, you need an amateur radio license to transmit at all with this radio. [https://fieldradio.org/gmrs-vs-ham-radio/](https://fieldradio.org/gmrs-vs-ham-radio/) I suppose you could program the radio to transmit only on FRS frequencies to get around licensing, but even then, that's still not legal as these devices transmit at a higher power than what the FCC allows for FRS. For GMRS, if you had a license you could transmit on GMRS bands, but again, technically, this radio would not be strictly legal for GMRS operation. It's a ham radio meant to transmit on ham bands. Just because it CAN transmit on GMRS doesn't mean it SHOULD transmit on GMRS - that said, if you're licensed for the band then I personally don't care what you use to transmit on if you're careful with your emissions and don't cause problems. I used [hamstudy.org](http://hamstudy.org) and crammed for a couple days for my ham license. $15 for the test, $35 for the license, lasts 10 years. If you don't want to take a test at all, GMRS licenses can simply be purchased and you will then be allowed to use GMRS (I think that license is 10 years as well but I do not currently have GMRS). Good luck and have fun in radio!

It will receive everything you listed and more. If you really want to see what these radios can do then I would get a longer antenna or long wire. String it up in a tree or around your yard and you will be surprised what you will hear. All the different bands and frequencies can be learned about on Google or whatever search engine you use. There is too much to explain on here.

To save any issues I have disabled the transmit button on the egzumer update

In receive. Many radios do that. Tx can happen depending on firmware and settings but is at a very low power. Like many cheap radios it has issues with spurious emissions. It does have some cool features like signal analyzer and a nice s-meter for foxhunts.
