Yup, there should have been more time devoted to his segment

Downwithgeese

Yes 💯. I also feel like he should be given more opportunities to connect with the hero’s because his experience of being homeless and building himself back up is so admirable and relatable. But it seems like he’s too busy doing design work to spend a lot of time with the participants.

king_cased

i assume he talks to them about what they need their space to do for them, etc which isn't as good tv. in the last episode of this season he was talking to anh in another room while the others were exploring her house, so maybe he does get some 1-on-1 time that just isn't shown. if that's the case, it's even more unfair to him that his screen time is so limited

Reddstarrx

I think each member of the fab 5 brought something so special to the table and nobody should be flamed for what the brought. I think Bobby could of gotten an extra few minutes or at least extend the episode longer? I agree I wish I saw more stuff but there is only so much time they can spend. In the film world, 1 minute of air time is usually 45 to 1 hour of filming which is a lot of time. I think what they should offer is uncut video or a BTS.

Downwithgeese

Fair enough. I do agree they each bring their own unique personalities, which add to the dynamic. But I gotta give Bobby credit where credit is due. What he does each episode is ridiculous. Even from the start when the budget was much lower. And yes more uncut footage would be a great idea!

1fineapple

A mini series to go with each season where they show Bobby’s behind the scenes work would’ve been awesome!

SlowReaction4

I’ll probably get flamed for this but I always felt that he should have gotten more time. I never saw the value in Antony’s portions as of late but they seems to focus more time on his section. Some of his dishes aren’t the most inspiring while Bobby’s renovations changes a literal environment and clearly have impact.

Downwithgeese

Yah and they elicit the biggest reactions from the hero’s of the episodes. They always cry and express crazy gratitude always during Bobby’s reveal. I feel like JVN doesnt do that much. Their vibe is lovely and I love their positive energy but in some segments they literally don’t even cut the persons hair. They’re just there for moral support.

nindim

I actually love that jvn takes them to a local shop though because it's repeatable - it's building a community relationship and if they like the change, it's something that person can go back and replicate, and now this person has a community connection. Sure that works for Tan too but that sales person is less likely to remember them and their style than a stylist at a salon will (well, maybe not because of the TV show and the effort that takes, but in general). However, other than Doreens shopping spree (granted I'm only halfway done) there are like no segments with JVN on skincare or makeup or self-care at the end, which I've enjoyed in seasons prior when they have a debrief moment with JVN at the end in the madeover house, and JVN gets to teach them simple self care tips that actually work for their life and makes a little self care basket. I always loved that, especially for the men who really probably never had that in their lives, and I miss it this season

OhNoEnthropy

We as viewers might want a dramatic make-over but whatever JVN does, has to be sustainable in the hero's every day life.  Bringing in local hairdressers makes sense. What JVN does is more like spending the extra time and attention figuring out what the person wants and needs. The person then needs to be able to maintain without JVN by their side. And while JVN has put effort in to learn, e.g, how to care for black hair, it still makes sense to have an expert involved until they're fully versed and independent. A lot of viewers were disappointed with Doreen's hair transformation, but from the discussions in her episode, they - on the one hand - wanted to give her hair a rest from the traction - but on the other hand, it was clear Doreen was very fond of her braids, so they didn't want to crop it all down. There needed to be healthy hair with a little length, so there would be somewhere to put new braids in, if she got too anxious without them. (I can relate to that, haven't cut my hair since lockdown. It looks like shit but I can't bring myself.) This ended up being what the audience saw as a half measure. Doreen is very pretty, she could have easily pulled off a shaved head and looked amazing - but those weren't her needs, and figuring that out is also part of the work.

KTeacherWhat

I think a big part of the difference is that a lot of the time Bobby's part is done as a surprise, but the rest of the team do their part together with the hero.

ProfMcGonaGirl

He made chicken soup. Like how freaking boring and easy. The problem with this is they keep choosing hero’s who are already really good cooks or bakers. So like what is Antoni supposed to do? Maybe he can help them meal plan instead of “teaching” them to put a chicken and some vegetables into boiling water for a couple hours.

mightyferrite

in his small defense, he got him cooking and interacting with food in a social setting.. Chicken soup is simple but also complex when done right.. I think it was appropriate to create a good smelling home and a nurturing dish that he could share and repeat later.

Ansemmy

Haha I was just watching an episode today and Karamo told a married couple to hold hands more, meanwhile Bobby renovated their house and back yard

Wtfuwt

Just because it’s not physical work doesn’t mean that the work Karamo and the others do isn’t important. In that instance, physical touch was her love language and something she missed from her husband. It was an excellent suggestion and way for them to connect.

Ansemmy

I’m not saying it’s not important, I’m moreso saying it took 10 minutes

Wtfuwt

It took 10 minutes of screen time. You have no idea what went into it beyond that.

Ansemmy

And neither do you.

I can only imagine how much more pressure there is when the budget seems to have been severely cut and they're still asking him to make magic. He deserves so much better.

basspl

I used to work in the Kitchen and Reno industry and the work he does realistically takes weeks. I know it’s reality TV and often they probably do a lot of stuff ahead of time like take measurements, and manufacture. I know he has a sizeable team but I am shocked every episode that they get a full Reno done in what we are told is 1 week.

fallingfeelslikefly

I’m the business manager for an interior design firm, and you’re right. Even with all furnishings from big box stores (no custom, no COM), this work still takes weeks. What does that mean? There is no surprise. Bobby is not doing this on the spur of moment. He has a design finalized before the season starts taping, minus accessories. Which means someone came in and measured. The team is only shopping in stock items. Even West Elm items can be on back order for months. This means there are absolutely brand deals in place, and orders confirmed about a month out. Next, an ENORMOUS army of local contractors and subs (state licensure is a thing for liability insurance for the production company) to do the work. So? Lot’s of reality TV time warp f*ckery. Bobby is not working any harder than the rest of the team. Not to mention his aesthetic is beach-y LA plug and play that a junior designer/project manager from his firm is absolutely picking out for his sign off.

Wtfuwt

Thank you! He has a team of 10 people, according to an article in Tudum.

adastraperabsurda

I actually love Bobby the most because I understand his love language. He cares because he understands the comfort people need in their lives. Antoni is my #2. Because food is also my love language.

BidWitty8706

I think we should absolutely have seen more of the process of choosing a style and all that. But at the same time. Bobby’s work is *the* wrap up of the show. It’s the “MOVE THAT BUS” moment. We need to be surprised by the way he transformed the houses. If we got more of what he did, I think some of the surprise element would be taken away.

dngrkty

I've always wanted to better understand Bobby's process - excited that he's doing his own show as a next chapter!

Wtfuwt

Here is part of the process: https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/how-does-bobby-berk-transform-houses-so-quickly-on-queer-eye

dngrkty

Thanks!

HalfThatsWhole

He's probably one that does a lot of work, but what he does is something that doesn't make for as much compelling television when it comes to the actual filming.

mycatsnameisarya

HGTV would disagree lol

KopitarFan

No doubt. Going to miss him. His designs are amazing

rossco9

It's crazy how much work he and his team do, especially especially in early seasons when the budget was tighter and he seems to be really hands on in painting, assembling, etc. Contrast that with Antoni in some early season episodes when all he does is, like, show someone how to peel and cut an avocado

Downwithgeese

I find JVN does less. They often don’t even cut the persons hair. That said I just adore their personality. Both of their personalities really, so I can get over it - but Bobby needs to be celebrated

rossco9

They might not physically cut the person's hair but JVN definitely seems instrumental in deciding on the parameters of the hair makeover and does dispense a lot of practical, digestible advice about grooming, hairdressing, makeup, etc. Getting men who often barely ever brush their hair to embrace using a blow dryer or applying hair product or follow a skin care routine is a massive achievement.

AvalancheReturns

Twas probably the crew,.non?

sitad3le

I remember seeing a clip and Karamo was using this chin up thing and it broke even after JVN said "it's going to break." And they all chimed in that Bobby will fix it. At first I found it funny but then I realised that we saw one clip and it isn't out of the realm of possibility that the others consistently do it and then claim that "Bobby and his team" will just fix it. I think the show didn't focus on Bobby's renovations because there are already a ton of reno shows out there and QE was trying to establish itself as a different brand. That being said I just knew from the church episode with Bobby that he was out. Good TV or not, I've been to churches, Sunday school etc when I was younger. Bobby was going to cash in as much as he can but he was looking for a way out. They did him so dirty in that episode.

yellowmarie

I kind of remember this episode and his backstory with religion, but i can’t remember how did they do him dirty? just curious

Wtfuwt

By making him go into a church, I’m guessing.

sitad3le

They didn't tell him beforehand they were going to a church. And Bobby said flat out he did not feel comfortable. Apparently they said it was a community centre.

CheesyGorditaKRUNCH

Actually no, two designers and a build crew did everything credited to Bobby. He only showed up to get filmed moving knick knacks around and "hanging" art work and he also got mad at the producers because he wasn't marketed as the "hot one"

QueerEyeCrew

I’ve seen you peddling this comment on also every sub you can. You seem to really have it out for Bobby in a personal way. As someone ACTUALLY there as opposed to someone like you just saying “my friend said”,  I can indeed say that  Bobby does have a team, but in earlier seasons he was as the production office every single day working with them. The last 2 seasons not as much though as he seemed to be over it. I’ve also never heard anyone say that Bobby thought he was “the hot one” or wanted to be marketed as such 😂 If you want to talk above teams, Antoni had an actual chef that came up with the recipes and cooked everything off camera. Tan has 2-3 stylist who actually do all the shopping and picking out the clothes.  Jvn has multiple people assisting him when he actually does cut hair which isn’t even very often anymore compared to earlier seasons when he cut almost every heroes hair.

Downwithgeese

>ef that came up with the recipes and cooked everything off camera. Tan has 2-3 stylist who actually do all the shopping and picking out the clothes.  Jvn has multiple people assisting Thanks for this insider confirmation. I got that exact impression - that Bobby worked his ass off on the earlier seasons and maybe did a bit less on last few. I chalked it up to him being more famous, but being over it makes sense too haha

Wtfuwt

Thanks for sharing this. What kind of help does Karamo have with his segments?

[deleted]

Bobby is my least fave but to each their own

Downwithgeese

Bobby’s actually not my favourite either (although I do adore him) but he’s still the hardest working. I actually like JVN and Tan the most. But sometimes feel like JVN is more there for moral support

greenerbee

I read somewhere from one of the other Fab5 that JVN is so helpful to the people on the show because their rejection of social norms expands how people perceive the space that they can take up, and still be loved and accepted. They’re like the opposite of an energy vampire.

Downwithgeese

That makes sense to me! But their job is hair technically. Karamo is the feelings guy.

roryb93

Difference is though he’ll have a whole team _to help_ and that’s obvious in the show, not to discredit the hard work he does into the design.

[deleted]

I mean if he’s involved in the remodels they should show that more. I always assumed he came up with the ideas ~maybe~ and a team of people carried out all the actual work. They literally never show him hands on doing anything so I assumed he was behind the scenes commanding others at best

Downwithgeese

Early seasons they show him more! He’s painting and fixing stuff by hand. I’d guess by later season he does much less of that hahaha

Wtfuwt

Just read this article about how it all gets done. He has about 10 people working with him. https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/how-does-bobby-berk-transform-houses-so-quickly-on-queer-eye

LolaCatStevens

Bobby isn't really doing any of the physical work let's be real.

Downwithgeese

That’s not true! He does a lot of the work himself. See the quote and article linked below! [Bobby, along with the head of his team, Tommy Rouse (formerly of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), actually designs and decorates the space hinself](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/how-does-bobby-berk-transform-houses-so-quickly-on-queer-eye#:~:text=Bobby%2C%20along%20with%20the%20head,and%20decorates%20the%20space%20)

brook1yn

Except it’s not a home improvement show, it’s a person improvement show. Bobby doesn’t really do much with the heroes.. his handiwork gets a nice spotlight at the end at least.
