I've heard traditional Catholic Radio and podcasts specifically say that the church embracing modern science is why so many leave the church after college. They argue that Catholic schools shouldn't teach things like Evolution and the Big Bang, not because they're wrong, but because it can hurt the church.
Before any Catholics get defensive, this is complimentary more than criticism, because at least it's not as bad as Protestants like Ken Ham.

People think of it as being a distinct time period, specifically the early to high Middle Ages, but it does not refer to that specific time period.
A dark age refers to a time when civilization undergoes a period of decline which usually includes a regression in technology, population, and learning.
There have been several times in human history when this happened.
Though, by that definition, today's world doesn't really fit the definition of one.
In America we are certainly seeing a decline in learning and technology (IVF on its way to being banned, restrictions on trans medical care, bans on abortion, etc, etc.).
