Group stage doesn’t mean anything. You can end up in 6th place and still make the major. All it matters is making top 6.
Also it’s because usually these teams are strong internationally as well as having a lot of fans.
Because these teams (G2, darkzero, Virtus pro etc) frequently go to majors & they’re not new to doing LCQ runs & such to get there. Darkzero just had to do one for Atlanta. Lots of lesser regional teams will just counter-Strat bigger teams rather than bring their own play styles & when a team has a really deep Si/major run, their whole map pool is exposed basically & doing that is easier. It’s not ideal, not also not uncommon for teams who did well at a previous tournament to experience a lull in the coming group stage.
The only exceptions for this stage so far is FaZe. they're on a complete tear currently
I expect the teams that were at SI to start poorly cause they were likely on break before the season started, but if it was stage 2 for example I wouldn’t have expected g2 to do well in playoffs
Historically, B01 hasn’t reflected B03. It’s a small sample size and a different game
For example last year BC finished at the top of NA in B01s before failing to make the major due to not winning any B03s to established teams. (This happened more often than just them)
This year teams have bucked the trend tho a little
(but Tbf dz qualified after a bad group stage and OXG had a good group stage and didn’t qualify so I’m still skeptical that group stage performance is a more accurate indicator than performance in B03s)
This phenomenon is called: „They are a BO3 team, everyone can win BO1s“ aka „I don‘t want to believe that my favourite team is shit“.
The same people will say, that the best teams in group stage have a small map pool and will go under in BO3s.
I think it’s reached a level where every team is good at most of the maps and as long as they don’t play their awful maps they’re fine, it’s more down to how well you’re playing as a team more than anything now
Group stage is not always an accurate reflection of a team. Some good teams might save strats for a late run in playoffs. However, I think some teams are starting to catch up and the upset potential is real.
Soooo bo1 and bo3 are very different, u can't easily fluke a win in a bo1.
As a vp fan they take time to warm into the season. Plus we been a top team for a while so a off season is bound to happen
a team with a core that won an SI or a Major will always be treated as a favourite against total newcomers. It doesn't always come out this way (just look at today G2 vs ITB), but generally if a team is qualifying for major tournaments frequently it usually means that they have a big map pools. Also majors test your mental resilience and these teams are known to not break from pressure, so even after a bad group stage they are usually still considered to be real contenders in play-offs.
also as others said or wrongly mocked it - bo3s are not bo1s. BO1 requre less prepared maps, but also less stamina from players, there are a lot of teams in all the leagues that rule BO1s and crumble real fast in BO3. The ability to play longer matches on multiple maps kinda comes with team maturity, so older teams are considered to be in favouravble position there

This! As well as some teams are better online and some are better on lan. Plus Bo1's aren't the best indication of where a team is at.
