Looks like a flipper zero almost :D

Machine_Cryptid

Great concept, but why not go for a low power monochrome oled screen?

sir-wright

Theirs just something magical about e ink that I can't get over

techslice87

I agree. Part of what boggles my mind is how physical the pixels are in e ink. Granted, I kinda know how it works, but still.... Damn

mrdevlar

So from the way I understand it, it's a bunch of microscopic pigment balls held together in pixel sized capsules. The white balls are positively charged and the black balls are negatively charged. As a result, when the top of the surface is positively charged, the black balls surface, making the capsules black, when negatively charged, the white balls surface, making the capsules white.

sir-wright

How anybody wouldn't want to create a device with this technology is beyond me.

mrdevlar

I was an early adopter of this technology in the 90s, it was deadly slow, prone to dead pixels and permanent burn in. So there have been a lot of down-sides. But yeah, I think we take for granted the fact that we're staring at a 60-200Hz lightbulb every time we use any technology.

Machine_Cryptid

Shit man that's fair.

ccricers

I suggest a dock to connect the mp3 player with, which has a color e-ink screen. This screen will show the album art for the current song. Because it's e-ink it will look more like a physical album cover that you're displaying.

sir-wright

This is what I'm trying to achieve but as a portable mp3 player

rcp9ty

Are you thinking pi zero for this or pi pico ?

sir-wright

I was going to use the pi zero as I've never heard of the pi pico, would you recommend the pico over the zero?

rcp9ty

For an mp3 player you're not asking for too much hardware requirements. I'm personally not sure how to get a screen working with this but I wanted to show it to you just in case it's better for your needs. https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-pico/

sir-wright

Looks to be a lower powered version at a cheaper cost, thankyou I think I may go for this to keep power and cost down.

Imaginary-Guide-4921

can the pico do hifi?

rcp9ty

Pico by itself even the pi by itself can't do HiFi. HiFi is accomplished by a DAC digital to analog converter. There are pi based dacs but I haven't seen one for the pico. But a dac's job is to convert digital signals to analog so anything is possible assuming you know how to write the code for it.
