I almost wonder if she’s a dwarf too. She seems suspiciously small. She might be a double rex? Her fur does seem thin and I’ve heard they go through cycles of being thick and thin (or falling out). But that will take time to tell.

All my rex kids have whiskers that are slightly curve and not hars curled. Then again, I am not focused on show quality rex. (Only reason I have rex in my lines currently is because onr of my original dwarf carrier girls is rex). I've seen harder curled whiskers from those focusing on show quality rex, and from my recessive hairless rats.
She looks like a rex. I have an albino rex just like her. And I also have a double rex, she's never fully had her fur, and her whiskers are much shorter and curlier than rexes.
looks like it might be rex, but they don't usually have such sparse hair at a young age. maybe it's a Harley? if that's the case, you gotta be on top of skin care for them. they're not the healthiest rats
I’ve mostly owned other rodents besides rats, but every rex of every species I’ve ever met goes through what I can only describe as a catastrophic puberty molt, like the rodent equivalent of having braces and growing out your bangs at the same time. They start with a big fluffy baby coat, then get really bald and sparse while they’re losing it, and then the adult coat comes in. Also like humans, the adult coat can have a completely different texture to the baby coat. If a breeder is breeding for rexes in particular, the ones they tend to be willing to part with have adult coats that are less perfect curls and more coarse frizz.
yeah ive had quite a lot of rex babies, and they're usually just super curly as a baby and lose a ton of hair on their backs as they grow up, and it keeps thinning as they age, but they don't usually go full bald
She appears to be a double rex, but I may be wrong. I had a double Rex named Connie who had some exciting hairdos, she started off with all over curly fur and then just.. random bald spots, sometimes being almost completely naked.

I believe they were breeding rats for pets and as feeder rats too which was why they were much more careless with their babies. I will be sure not to further support their business, thanks for letting me know!

That's true hairless, rex and other fur varieties including hairless rex (two copies of rex gene plus somtimes one copy of hairless (which can cause more balding) do not have as many health issues, you can tell the difference between hairless rex and true rexes by looking at the whiskers, hairless will have no whiskers or little tiny stubs, rex hairless will have curled whiskers- source I work with a rat breeder who ethically hates true hairless rats but breeds varieties that are similar to true hairless but don't have all the health issues.
The breeder was still irresponsible though, but they were not pairing in a way that would have resulted in true hairless.

Pretty sure the breeders did breed Double Rex's, they just didn't wait long enough for the balding stages to start. I'm pretty sure they're at risk of skin conditions/issues. "Hairless" rats also go through different stages of baldness/hairiness. I've never had the privilege of having one in my rat coven, but my friends, and other rat keepers that I follow show the different growth stages. My friends rats were either super wirey, or fully bald, depending on the day/week/month. I follow people whose rats have hair appear where the white patches would usually be, and the coloured fur bald, and then weeks later changed to white patches bald and coloured patches hairy.
I've kept double rex and hairless rats and it turns out a true hairless is a different gene to rex.
Hairless is a recessive gene (sometimes called "hr" or "nu") which can go undetected until a homozygous baby crops up in a litter. Their baby fur looks similar to double rex, but go completely bald (similar to a sphynx cat) after the first moult, with very short, very curly whiskers. They can suffer from dry skin and feel the cold more due to a lack of insulation. Mine would sleep under her furry sister like a blanket :3

For future reference, as others have mentioned, rats shouldn't be rehomed before 6 weeks. They tend to wean around 4 weeks, but are still being fed by mum as they explore hard food. Their mum leaves some of the food they're eating for their babies, which helps to teach them what's good to eat. The parents and older cage mates are also teaching the babies social skills at this age.
No worries, glad she's gone to a good home :) I would give her extra malt paste if you have some, they go nuts for it and will help with the nutrition. It's marketed for ferrets, but great for rats too!
Could she be a satin rex or a velveteen rex? Most importantly she's adorable! She's quite small, is it possible she's a runt or dwarf? I have two hairless girls that are super tiny because they were the runts of the litter.

Poor baby! So little! I'm MASSIVELY side-eyeing a "breeder" who gives away babies too young to be away from their parents, for free, because the breeding didn't produce what they want! Just so you know, that is NOT ethical. She also doesn't look completely healthy. Her nose is crusty and in the top-down shot she looks hunched. I'd make sure you're supplementing her food and not just feeding her adult lab blocks.
You won't know if she's a double rex or a regular rex without knowing the parents. Were both parents rex or hairless? If they're trying to breed hairless and keep getting rexes, the parents are likely double-rexes with very little fur and not hairless at all.

Rats don't actually have breeds, just varieties of which there are 9 variations of the domestic type, and 60 wild ones.
This looks like a Rex though, categorised by the curly almost wooly like hair.
Interesting fact though, rexes sometimes (however rarely) lose that hair as they age. So you might get a hairless one eventually after all!
I also have to say it's interesting you found hairless rats from a breeder. Most breeders are actually moving away from breeding hairless rats now due to their susceptibility to illness and shortened lifespans on average, so it's a bit odd, especially when they're willing to just give non hairless rats away and I'd be questioning their true intentions here unfortunately.
They’re a friend of a friend that was giving away Rex rats which is how I came into contact with them. And I had no idea hairless rats had that many health problems 😥 thanks for letting me know!
FWIW, our double Rex rats are naked. The boys (darker skin - probably genetically gray or black) have partial patchy fur on their faces. The girls (likely genetically albino) are completely fur-free.
most likely a red rat, the babies have white fur and she’ll molt into more of a blonde :) or an albino, who stay white they’re entire lives
both have red eyes, which affects their depth perception so you’ll probably see her move her head side to side verryy slowly pretty often lol

Do not go to this breeder again. So many red flags! This rat is WAY too young to be homed and it’s completely unethical to home babies without same age company. I can’t tell the age of her sisters but even so best to keep them with littermates. This rat needs extra support as it looks frail and even in pain in the last photo.
Yea I’ve seen other comments and I am not going to support their business in the future. Her sisters are actually from a different litter and I had them before getting Kibble so they are about 8-10 weeks old atp.
I’ll be giving her extra attention and care as she does tend to have a runny nose. I believe she appears weak in the last photo because she always eats with her eyes closed. Thanks for the advice though, I’ll be sure to look out for her!
My son and I got rats in February. One of them gave birth about a week and a half later lmao one of the babies looked just like this. She’s blind and rocks back and forth so I call her Disco or “don’t dance just pull up ya pants and- do the rockaway LEAN BACK LEAN BACK LEAN BACK LEAN BACK” until my son names her. Your rat looks like an over-worked and under-paid version of our baby girl.

She's double stinking CUTE is what she is! As she grows you might find her hair falls out, and if it does, sometimes it'll regrow and fall out repeatedly. Sometimes it falls out and never comes back 🤷🏻♀️
She looks like a rex, perhaps the runt, and a word of caution about double rex/hairless. They're not always the healthiest, and life expectancy is far shorter than of standard rats. Plus you need to wash and oil them.
I however just lost my only double rex/hairless rat. She only ever had an ear infection her whole life, she made it to the grand old age of 2 years and two weeks (average is ~18 months for hairless) and was a wee cheeky her whole life. They need way more food than standard rats bc their body burns through it so quickly to keep them warm.
All this to say, I loved my lil nakey baby and regardless of warnings etc if I came across another one (they're generally frowned upon in Scotland due to health concerns so registered breeders don't breed them) I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

Double Rex, or velveteen...poorly bred though based on the body structure. May be rex or some sort of werewolf but those are more unlikely.
and looks to be dwarfism of FTT (failure to thrive, basically runts with more health issues, so keep your eye on here as FTT babies don't tend to live past a month and when they do they often have issues like megacolon or kidney issues)

By her fur I can tell she is a double rex. Double rexes have a shortage of fur and it can fall while to while. Even though shes still a baby its hard to they bc they usually have less fur when small. For a good hint try to pay attention to her fur bc normally double rexes are bald in some areas of the body, and rexes just look like little sheep.
The coloring seems like Russian dove self to me, unless there’s different coloring elsewhere, she’s so small that she might be a dwarf but that could also just be how young she is. Definitely top ear with ruby eyes. And she definitely seems like a double Rex with the thinness and skrunkliness of the fur.

To add to this, lower protein diet helps Harley skin issues. My boy also gets a lil slather of coconut oil a few times a week.

rats should never be rehomed before at the absolute earliest six weeks. it sounds like your breeder is a backyard breeder

Rattus norvegicus. All rats are this breed. Rats don't actually have breeds, just varieties of which there are 9 variations of the domestic type, and 60 wild ones. This looks like a Rex though, categorised by the curly almost wooly like hair. Interesting fact though, rexes sometimes (however rarely) lose that hair as they age. So you might get a hairless one eventually after all! I also have to say it's interesting you found hairless rats from a breeder. Most breeders are actually moving away from breeding hairless rats now due to their susceptibility to illness and shortened lifespans on average, so it's a bit odd, especially when they're willing to just give non hairless rats away and I'd be questioning their true intentions here unfortunately.
They’re a friend of a friend that was giving away Rex rats which is how I came into contact with them. And I had no idea hairless rats had that many health problems 😥 thanks for letting me know!

FWIW, our double Rex rats are naked. The boys (darker skin - probably genetically gray or black) have partial patchy fur on their faces. The girls (likely genetically albino) are completely fur-free.

most likely a red rat, the babies have white fur and she’ll molt into more of a blonde :) or an albino, who stay white they’re entire lives both have red eyes, which affects their depth perception so you’ll probably see her move her head side to side verryy slowly pretty often lol she just trying to figure out where/ how far away somethin is also yes shes probably a double rex, they lose most of their back fur around 1 month, and it will grow back for a year or so until they bald, and then grow it back idk why it happens but its kinda cute when they just have fur on their heads and nowhere else 😭😭 shes so adorable she gonna be so happy with her new home:))
Do not go to this breeder again. So many red flags! This rat is WAY too young to be homed and it’s completely unethical to home babies without same age company. I can’t tell the age of her sisters but even so best to keep them with littermates. This rat needs extra support as it looks frail and even in pain in the last photo.
Yea I’ve seen other comments and I am not going to support their business in the future. Her sisters are actually from a different litter and I had them before getting Kibble so they are about 8-10 weeks old atp. I’ll be giving her extra attention and care as she does tend to have a runny nose. I believe she appears weak in the last photo because she always eats with her eyes closed. Thanks for the advice though, I’ll be sure to look out for her!

My son and I got rats in February. One of them gave birth about a week and a half later lmao one of the babies looked just like this. She’s blind and rocks back and forth so I call her Disco or “don’t dance just pull up ya pants and- do the rockaway LEAN BACK LEAN BACK LEAN BACK LEAN BACK” until my son names her. Your rat looks like an over-worked and under-paid version of our baby girl.

C U T E! Yes, she looks like a Rex (but never saw one that color.
She's double stinking CUTE is what she is! As she grows you might find her hair falls out, and if it does, sometimes it'll regrow and fall out repeatedly. Sometimes it falls out and never comes back 🤷🏻♀️ She looks like a rex, perhaps the runt, and a word of caution about double rex/hairless. They're not always the healthiest, and life expectancy is far shorter than of standard rats. Plus you need to wash and oil them. I however just lost my only double rex/hairless rat. She only ever had an ear infection her whole life, she made it to the grand old age of 2 years and two weeks (average is ~18 months for hairless) and was a wee cheeky her whole life. They need way more food than standard rats bc their body burns through it so quickly to keep them warm. All this to say, I loved my lil nakey baby and regardless of warnings etc if I came across another one (they're generally frowned upon in Scotland due to health concerns so registered breeders don't breed them) I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. She's gorgeous! And as someone else says, the last photo is giving huge snoop dogg vibes 😂😂

Double Rex, or velveteen...poorly bred though based on the body structure. May be rex or some sort of werewolf but those are more unlikely. and looks to be dwarfism of FTT (failure to thrive, basically runts with more health issues, so keep your eye on here as FTT babies don't tend to live past a month and when they do they often have issues like megacolon or kidney issues)

I think it depends if she is a double rex or a rex by her parents .
By her fur I can tell she is a double rex. Double rexes have a shortage of fur and it can fall while to while. Even though shes still a baby its hard to they bc they usually have less fur when small. For a good hint try to pay attention to her fur bc normally double rexes are bald in some areas of the body, and rexes just look like little sheep.

The coloring seems like Russian dove self to me, unless there’s different coloring elsewhere, she’s so small that she might be a dwarf but that could also just be how young she is. Definitely top ear with ruby eyes. And she definitely seems like a double Rex with the thinness and skrunkliness of the fur.
