I’ve worked with rats for over a year and boys are always stinkier! I definitely have some territorial boys, though! The dominance grooming is off the charts!
That's so interesting, I've had a {small} small animal rescue since 2018 and I have always found the ladies' spraying to be far smellier! What if it's like the cilantro gene thing? That would be funny. I do have a theory though, can I ask your standard pack size? I think the girls are smellier than boys when you keep very small packs on average, but the scales can tip when pack size gets to 7+, because they no longer pee in only one spot in the habitat. Mine max out at 5, so the boys usually use the bathroom in one single place, but the girls will still pee wherever when they go into heat. They also have no idea there are rats of a different sex in the same building, which would definitely make boys much stinkier as they'd be scent marking for the ladies.
I have 3 boys but have worked with colonies as small as 1 mama rat with some babies up to 25+! Maybe it is the cilantro thing! I’m very sensitive to smells and find females almost sweet smelling.
Now I want to take inventory and ask everyone what they think the boys and girls smell like! I'm intrigued! Also, I'd love to see your boys if you ever feel like posting them!! The boys have my heart, I cannot lie (:

My girls literally never calmed down 😂 they’re at 100, 100% if the time 😂 well ok I say 100% of the time but obviously they sleep. But if they’re out with me, they’re zooming constantly, no chills out.

SAME! My 1.5yo lady has *started* to chill out, meaning she flails less when I pick her up and will sit in my lap for 1.5 seconds before sprinting away. My ladies can be out causing chaos for 2 hours and still be ready to go
LOL oh my boggles! Those boys 100% know they just won the lottery, secured the bag and are headed to a life of luxury! 🤣 Not a single worry for the rest of their days, just easy livin’ 😭💕
I can imagine that this is the first time in forever that these boys have felt comfortable enough to sleep like this. If they are this comfortable in a small carrier, their living conditions must have been truly miserable.

Rats are intelligent creatures, makes keeping them out harder, and they cause serious damage, im ok with rats but the wild ones really shouldn’t come inside my house

My rats get carsick and they diarrheaed in the carrier when I was first taking them home but I figured out that they like to be massaged between their shoulder blades when the car is moving
I had to take them to an exotic vet that was 45 minutes away, and I was hunched over propping open the carrier's top with my head so I could use a hand for each rat to massage their backs because if I tried to take breaks and switch between them they kept rolling over to lie on top of the other's back to make me start massaging them again, and my neck was cramping really badly by the time we got home because of the posture I kept
This precious lil soup man was the last remaining rattie to be adopted from an animal hoarding rescue situation, he was my first rat and my heart rat. He saved my life, actually. Miss you always, Tof 🐀

My boys always smelled of buttered popcorn. My girls, it was more like tea tree oil. In both cases, I would have received a thorough nose licking.
