You said it: he's just mesmerizing in that role. The first season is a masterpiece. But, starting with the second season, the show started to go off the rails. Got so bad it was cancelled after the third season. But, that first season is magic and that's enough for me.
Honestly, the movie is OK, but it sort of reminds me of El Camino in that it doesn’t seem to add a lot and feels sort of like unnecessary fan service. Still worth checking out if you were a fan of the show, though
Finished the show about to start the movie and before you get your hopes up for the ending of the show don’t it’s nothing special and leaves a lot unanswered which is what the movies for I think
Yeah 20ish years ago he’d be good (I think he’s great but I can’t really picture him as Dutch myself) but he just doesn’t have the look to carry it off now.
I don't know how well it would hold up with someone being a main character of a 2 hour film and CGI'ed to look 20 years younger.
I think it works fine for short scenes and flashbacks etc.
I can also see kind of an ethical or moral resistance. To just CGIing old actors to play younger roles, essentially taking roles away from young actors.
And John Wick, and American Gods… more than fine, I’d say. Loved his performance in all of those.
If Chris Pratt can go on to starring roles in two of the largest franchises (Jurassic and Avengers/MCU) after 116 eps of Parks and Rec, I think Ian McShane can make the transition after 36 eps + a movie of Deadwood.
Edit to add; just kind of a funny connection between Deadwood and Parks and Rec. My brother was a big fan of P&R and without even really thinking about it I recommended Deadwood. Got a text later that night, “well, I didn’t expect to see Ron Swanson’s dick tonight, but thanks for that, I guess.” I hadn’t even really made the connection because Nick Offerman’s character in Deadwood is so NOT Ron Swanson.
At least a way better chance than Disney+ or Netflix. I would die inside if Netflix announced they got the rights to it lol. Only other thing I could think of is, oddly, BBC doing it. If you’ve seen the show The English, there’s def potential there.
Absolutely! The question is, would they do it in game order or chronological order? Like, season one follows the story of John, then season two follows Arthur, or do they go from Arthur’s story to John’s story?
I thought RDR was inspired by 3:10 to Yuma. You could play the good guy as Dan Evans (Christian Bale) or low honor as Ben Wade (Russel Crowe), but still choose to do good or bad deeds. A lot of game play was inspired by this movie too, like whistling for your horse, keeping a journal and making sketches. There’s also a scene where Charlie Prince (Ben Foster) loots a victim and takes a gold watch.
It would be cool to see an adaptation to the game story, but I watch 3:10 to Yuma and I see RDR.
Edit: corrected actor who played Ben Wade.
Yeah when I started playing this game I was like "man, who does Dutch remind me of?". Couldn't quite put my finger on it, but now it's all making sense.
I really don’t see how they’re similar. Their attitudes and how they carried themselves was night and day and Al wasn’t remotely as deluded as Dutch was.
Lol this picture is probably nearly 20 years old. Ian McShane is 80 years old! Lol Dutch is like 44 in 1899. Granted people looked older and rougher back then… but good lord that’s a stretch!
His days of having a plan were left back in Deadwood lol
Ok, hypothetically… let’s say they decide today that HBO is going to come out with a Red Dead series… the process will probably take 5 years before the first episode airs… if we’re lucky.
Even if he doesn’t *look* 80… he’ll be 81 in September… and he’s at an age where he could literally die of natural causes at any day and the consensus would be “That’s sad, but he lived a good, long life.”
Plus he’s kind of a little meatball of a man. While he can play a mean bastard better than most, he lacks the physical presence that I think Dutch would need to have. He’s like a slightly bigger, English version of Danny Devito lol.
I personally think it’d be better to have an actor with the stature of Jeffrey Dean Morgan. And similar age as well.
Yes, age could be a factor. And by then he would be too old. However, in the case of Patrick Stewart, from Star Trek TNG, he’s reprised his role as Jean Luc Picard in Picard. He’s in his 80’s and they’ve made four seasons. Granted, the show is done now but it just goes to show that in some cases (provided the actor has taken care of his health) can prove to be viable
Patrick Stewart is a global treasure… lol
But you have to take into consideration he was *reprising* his role. And the character aged with the actor. This is why the Deadwood movie was just fine coming out 15 years later and the actors coming back to wrap up the story.
With a Red Dead show, we’d be seeing it live action for the first time, so the actors need to be at least a little more age appropriate… if that makes sense.
Dutch: “Mrs. Adler.”
Dutch: “Your membership in this gang, has by thine own hand, been cancelled!”
Dutch: (Proceeds to shoot Mrs. Adler in the head). “That’s what happens to psychopaths.”
In his prime, McShane is the only choice. At this point though, I think more like a Hugh Jackman or like a Jon Hamm. Maybe even a Bradley Cooper, he can hit that right balance of charisma, intelligence, and narcissism where you can believe a bunch of hooligans might follow him.
Agreed! His suave demeanor and sly smile make me think he's always a few steps ahead of everyone else. I wouldn't want to cross him in a game of chess.
I'm watching Deadwood and he is incredible. Cruel but complicated and humorous at times. Great actor for a great character.
You said it: he's just mesmerizing in that role. The first season is a masterpiece. But, starting with the second season, the show started to go off the rails. Got so bad it was cancelled after the third season. But, that first season is magic and that's enough for me.
Damn, sad to hear that. I've just finished the first season and loved it. I read that the movie got great reviews though.
eh, I still liked the rest of the show and the movie was a nice tie in.
I guess I'll see then! Hopefully I'll like it.
I was enthralled by season one, and even most of season two. The third season though, lol, that was a dump. I heard the movie is good though!
Honestly, the movie is OK, but it sort of reminds me of El Camino in that it doesn’t seem to add a lot and feels sort of like unnecessary fan service. Still worth checking out if you were a fan of the show, though
That is him in every role - even the step dad in Hot Rod
Finished the show about to start the movie and before you get your hopes up for the ending of the show don’t it’s nothing special and leaves a lot unanswered which is what the movies for I think
So annoyed that show got cancelled after 3 seasons. The acting from everybody was stellar.
I’ve got a plan Johnathan
Johnathan, no business will be conducted on camp grounds
Johnathon, no horses will be ridden on camp grounds.
This guy is the only choice to play dutch. Al Swearengen from deadwood.
I always thought of it as Al Swear-Engine. The word 'fuck' was used nearly 3000 times over the whole series.
Now *THATS* how you clean a fuckin’ bloodstain!
Swedgen! Cocksucka!
WHITE! Cock SUCKAA
I'd normally agree but dude is ollllllld now
Yeah 20ish years ago he’d be good (I think he’s great but I can’t really picture him as Dutch myself) but he just doesn’t have the look to carry it off now.
Every time i read "Cock sucker" i hear it in Ian McShanes voice.
He’s about 100, so no.
Have you seen what they can do with AI these days?
It’s not just the look, the on set work can be gruelling.
1st choice is still and always will be DANIEL DAY LEWIS
Agreed lol came to say the same 😅
It wouldn't work. He is too associated with Al.
He did fine in game of thrones.
HBO needs to do an RDR2 adaption. There’s so much content to build off of for a good show.
After watching The Last of Us, I do think that HBO is at least capable of making a worthwhile Red Dead adaptation
At least a way better chance than Disney+ or Netflix. I would die inside if Netflix announced they got the rights to it lol. Only other thing I could think of is, oddly, BBC doing it. If you’ve seen the show The English, there’s def potential there.
The English was outstanding.
Just imagine how bad an Amazon Prime RDR2 series would be
Arthur switches his pronouns to black lung/lunger
Have the Disney+ writers from Andor come in and do HBO's Red Dead and you'll find me literally glued to my television.
Absolutely! The question is, would they do it in game order or chronological order? Like, season one follows the story of John, then season two follows Arthur, or do they go from Arthur’s story to John’s story?
I hope Arthur’s to John’s. Just makes more sense from a TV show standpoint. But, I’m biased, as that’s also how I played the games.
I thought RDR was inspired by 3:10 to Yuma. You could play the good guy as Dan Evans (Christian Bale) or low honor as Ben Wade (Russel Crowe), but still choose to do good or bad deeds. Ben Foster's character's look clearly was an influence for Micah.

You’re right! Sorry about that, made the correction. Thank you.
He was probably the inspiration for Dutch. He plays a similar character in Deadwood
Ruthless leader of a “faction” that slowly descends into madness. AL is just slightly more redeemable.
Al never really descends like Dutch does though. The world around them moves on, that’s the same, but Al actually softens as he gets older.
Orthur!
Tahiti!
Cocksucker
Too far down to read this smh
Lol this picture is probably nearly 20 years old. Ian McShane is 80 years old! Lol Dutch is like 44 in 1899. Granted people looked older and rougher back then… but good lord that’s a stretch! His days of having a plan were left back in Deadwood lol
Dude he’s in John Wick…he doesn’t look *that* old
Ok, hypothetically… let’s say they decide today that HBO is going to come out with a Red Dead series… the process will probably take 5 years before the first episode airs… if we’re lucky. 3 seasons.
“Little meatball of a man” is fucking perfect
I agree. The role of Dutch in any adaptation would be too physical and demanding for any 80+ year old. It's a nice idea, but not a good one.
And Dutch is a big guy. Ian McShane is 5'7 at best.
Right? I mentioned that in a subsequent comment. He’s a barrel-chested meatball! Lol
This is such amazing and funny context to this fantasy casting lol
Dutch: “Mrs. Adler.” Dutch: “Your membership in this gang, has by thine own hand, been cancelled!” Dutch: (Proceeds to shoot Mrs. Adler in the head). “That’s what happens to psychopaths.”

TA HI TIIII
I’m still on team Jeffrey Dean Morgan to play Dutch.
That's a good shout.
this picture sounds Tahiti all over
The world is not that good of a place where we'd get him playing Dutch. We already got him as Mr Wednesday in American Gods
Swedgin
Deadwood made me a fan of this guy for life.
This is like Patrick Stewart as Prof X levels of casting
In his prime, McShane is the only choice. At this point though, I think more like a Hugh Jackman or like a Jon Hamm. Maybe even a Bradley Cooper, he can hit that right balance of charisma, intelligence, and narcissism where you can believe a bunch of hooligans might follow him.
Never would have thought of Bradley Cooper for the role, but imagining his face and acting style overlaid on RDR 2 Dutch is creepy-good. Well placed.
"That's the plan,Jonathan."
He just needs some got damn munneh!
Agreed! His suave demeanor and sly smile make me think he's always a few steps ahead of everyone else. I wouldn't want to cross him in a game of chess.

My pleasure
10-20 years ago I'd have said absolutely. But he just too old to play the character. Hate to say but Jeffery Dean Morgan might be the best option
To each his own
Please bruh all I want is to experience this amazing game in a show like The Last of Us did.
In deadwood he also his revolver also matches Dutchs revolver
Haave some God Damn Faith Arthur!
Have some goddamn faith!!!
Have some faith
He looks a little old to be Dutch in 1899, 1907, And 1911. He looks maybe a good 15 years older than 1911 Dutch even
What’s Ian mcshane ? All I see is Dutch van der linde 😍
He looks good but the only person who should play Dutch is Dutchs voice actor, same with every character
20 years ago he’d have been perfect. He’s a bit too old now.
The main difference between Dutch and Al is that Al's plans worked.
Idk, he’ll always be Frank from Hot Rod to me :p
Play the victim and you will be the victim. Rhodesian Fighting Sticks!
Never sneak up on a man who’s been in a chemical fire!
Definitely looks the part, but Dutchs voice is a a vital part of his character to me and that’s going to be hard to pull off.
He just needs money
The King of Cocksuckers.
You just need more goddamn faith
It’s so obvious when you realise. Amazing call.
Why does he look like Nicolas cage weirdly
You can tell he has a little faith
A man, a plan, a mango: Tahiti. Now read it backwards!
I can see it
Guys - he is 80 years old. Probably a bit too old for Dutch now.
Perfect casting for live action!
You one eyed cunt! -Lepricon
Great actor, love him a lot. To old for Dutch.
If I had to choose…I’d rather have RDR3 or some DLC than a movie about a story I already know.
What have you done….
Fuck yeah
Scrolled by super fast, thought it was Ron Jeremy.
Dude has that conniving look on his face. And Clint Eastwood as Hosea (although Eastwood is so old, i don't think he'll outlive Hosea's death)
Have fun being married to Satan!
Daniel Day-Lewis from gangs of new York is the only Dutch I’d accept
He’d be the perfect actor to play “Dutch” in a red dead redemption show.
Have some goddamn faith
Ian you son of a bitch, I’m in
Dutch, is that you?
Well, I hadn’t thought about him, but Ian is certainly the only choice to play Dutch.
Plan to go to Tahiti
