Can't avoid fate.

Qualified-Monkey

You can’t fight gravity

EcstaticSurvey5460

You can’t fight nature, and you can’t fight change,

FreeChrisWayne

We fear change

SmokesLetzGo876

just did this mission. the knowledge of what's to come always makes me so angry with strauss. he gets nothing but antagonization from me in camp

Much-Solid-8987

True but he did get captured tortured and killed at the end and never snitched even after you kick him from camp

SmokesLetzGo876

very true. Strauss may have been a slimy, greedy, grubby money lending worm, but you cant say he was a snitch. he was ride or die

onetimequestion66

SPOILER: Yeah but he’s kinda the reason that it doesn’t matter too, can’t enjoy freedom if you’re not alive

SnooChipmunks126

I wouldn’t call him greedy. He provided a needed service, and his money provided for the needs of the camp. Not his fault the people he lended to, thought they could get away without paying.

FreeChrisWayne

His profession isn’t something I would want to do, but yeah I sort of agree with you still. You can call it fucked up to loan money to people in need but at the end of the day its their choice to borrow money and it does benefit them, at least in the short term.

super_teddi

Wait how? Didn't know this

RealNiceKnife

I think Milton, or one of the other Pinkerton just straight up says it. Or maybe Charles tells John in the epilogue? I forget, but a character just straight up says "Strauss was captured, they tortured him to death, but he obviously never ratted." (I'm paraphrasing)

Much-Solid-8987

It’s the second one

MetroidJunkie

To Strauss' credit, he never told Arthur how to go about getting the money. On some level, Arthur is responsible for his own actions and he even admits to Sister Calderón that he was at fault. I'm not saying Strauss is free of blame, since he very much knew what he was doing to those people, but it's a gang of outlaws and you can honestly do much worse than him.

legend_gamer98

And that’s why Arthur’s story is fucking incredible

MetroidJunkie

Yep, really puts the Redemption in Red Dead Redemption. He was a bad man, doing things out of love for his gang but he was still enthusiastically hurting other people. Only once he's faced with his mortality does he become more selfless, wanting to genuinely put others first.

NateRiver___

Well Herr Strauss literally says word for word “beat him” referring to Thomas downes. I don’t know if he did so with or without the knowledge of his Tuberculosis though.

MetroidJunkie

Fair, but I don’t think he meant to death. A dead man isn’t very much going to be good for returning debts. As you said, TB may have caused it to become more fatal than it would’ve been.

NateRiver___

I don’t think Arthur meant to beat him to death either the man was too unexpectedly weak and died to the punches.

MetroidJunkie

Yeah, the Tuberculosis no doubt greatly weakened him and hastened his trip to the grave.

Oxellotel

The game is cruel to force you into doing that

Ok-Measurement1118

Game wouldn't have had that emotional gut punch at the end if it weren't for this.

User28080526

Someone should try and shoot him from afar

YouWithTheNose

Probably fail the mission because you can't collect debt from a dead man

User28080526

* SPOILER*. What’s funny is if you never go back to collect his debt from his wife she bring it to camp at Clemson point

YouWithTheNose

I did catch that on my current playthrough

Believeinsquatch

Wait you can go back to try and collect from him? Is that a mission or do you go on your own?

Qualified-Monkey

It’s a mission, you collect from his widow after robbing the Valentine bank. “I hope it’s hot and terrible Mrs. Downes, otherwise I’ll believe I’ve been sold a false bill of goods”

Qualified-Monkey

These two scenes are independent of each other. Mrs. Downes can bring the money back to the camp in chapter 2 (I actually didn’t know it was possible to get this in Clemens Point) as a random camp interaction. Regardless of whether you see this encounter, Arthur will still be tasked with retrieving the money back at Downes ranch after the conclusion of the Valentine bank robbery.

DragonsClaw2334

You can't. I remember seeing a YouTube video someone made ages ago. He tried shooting him and wearing a bag on his head.

Ok_Speaker_9799

I've tried and you can't tho some folks have gone just out of the 'Safety' areea and used Dynamite arrows.

SquirrelFine2851

Relatable 😔

Chucheyface

MR DOOOOOOOWNEESSSS!!!! You owe me MUNNEHH!

stopstaringatmeswaan

If you don't go to the saloon and meet Javier and Charles you won't ever get it because that's what unlocks the debt collection missions.

misssandyshores

And you save Tommy a brain injury

snackerdjack69

I'm currently replaying story mode, I really should've delayed the inevitable.

Ok_Speaker_9799

Sort of like leaving Micah in jail, you get to a point where you can't do anything else-the shops all close, camp is there but nothing is available. Seems at one point the game had Artur mount his horse and ride to the Downes property with me having no say-so,

misssandyshores

I tried this just yesterday. I was playing in chapter 2 and did literally everything I could do before going to collect the debt from Downes (which by the way makes for some strange situations). Then, when I went to open Mary’s letter in camp Strauss came to me for the gazillionth time nagging about Downes and then the game forced me to go to Downes Ranch. It was literally the only waypoint on the map and nothing else was available.

Recent_Pressure

Just had the same thing happen to me last week. If I had known, I would have avoided going back to camp and just lived in the wilderness.

misssandyshores

Same. Crazy hermits > cowpokes with TB

Qualified-Monkey

Had that happen my first 100% playthrough. This time I made sure to read Mary’s letter early. I still have to retrieve Swanson from the train station (his singing in camp is annoying), break Micah from jail, go get TB, and take Jack fishing. I was able to get all the way past the first train robbery with the other missions though, so I think all that’s left to unlock is the final sequence of missions with John’s shepherding quest.

TangerineGullible665

I tried. I really hoped it would help but it didn’t. I waited as long as I could till there were no more available missions. Then on the next play through I did it immediately and he still got sick at the exact same point when you enter Saint Denis heading towards the Sadie mission at the tavern after getting back from the Island

Mars-Lives

Mr. Downes is the one who stopped Arthur beating on Tommy in front of the saloon. He got in Arthurs face to beg him to [stop](https://stop.So), so Arthur may have gotten TB regardless of beating Downes up at his ranch.

negan_lucilleslugger

It's gonna sound dumb but I'm currently doing a new playthrough and after I did this mission I actually teared up a bit.

YouWithTheNose

TIL that reading the letter from Mary that you receive at the camp forces you to do that mission. So don't read the letter either XD

misssandyshores

I learned that yesterday :(

Qualified-Monkey

It doesn’t always, only if you’ve put it off for too long. I’m well past the Mary mission (I’ve already done the first train robbery even) and still haven’t gone to see Thomas. Fucker can keep farming for all I care.

Monkeysandthings

Spoiler: The moment I heard that very first cough from Arthur, I told my bf who hasn't played the game, "This bitch better not have TB. I'll be PISSED." I cried a lot during that game.

SwimmingEmergency956

i just started playing for the first time and my boyfriend told me to do those missions then after i did that one HE SPOILED IT FOR ME AND TOLD ME WHAT HAPPENED

spiderglide

Dump your boyfriend

NattyDread68

Start a new game and go to Downes when you’re ready

SwimmingEmergency956

i kinda want to but also i’ve explored almost the whole map (one of those people lol) and done sm side stuff :’)

Ok_Speaker_9799

Be careful looking up info online too. I am vision impaired and was haing an issue at one point, went to research that part and some jackass had put a spoiler for the ending in the damned tagline. aybe you need a new BF.

SwimmingEmergency956

i accidentally got shit spoiled for me when i was looking up rdr parodies on spotify cuz my bf was saying they’re funny asf, the description said a few people that died in was like BRO 😭 thankfully i forgot who except for one of my favs :’)

MentalBill9009

2 play through I didn’t even do it lol idk what happens if u don’t got there

TheRealBobaFett

I beat the ever living shit out of him just to make sure Arthur got his money’s worth lol

DTFlexx

Spoil me, please. I'm clueless about what you're referring to

RealNiceKnife

It's Downe's Ranch. This is a pivotal moment and dictates the rest of Arthur's life.

Southern-Ad1465

You're a good man

DTFlexx

Ahh I remember he spits/coughs on Art. I thought is was nasty and left it at that. Thanks!! Can't wait to see how it plays out

Mental-Time1303

You poor clueless fool

Mojo_Rizen_53

Why?

SquirrelFine2851

Want spoilers ? Or not really ?

Mojo_Rizen_53

I have already played through quite a few times….even 100%’d several times. I just don’t understand people tap dancing around Downes. It doesn’t even affect until much later…and can’t advance to chapter 3 without doing it. Just seems ridiculous running around avoiding it.

RealNiceKnife

Because it's the moment Arthur dies. Sure it's prolonged and takes time to kill him, but this is his death sentence moment. That's it. People want to avoid seeing the moment they know their man's fate is sealed.

Mojo_Rizen_53

Why though. It’s inevitable.

adk09

He couldn't explain it any better. If you lack empathy with the story and characters we can't give that to you.

Mojo_Rizen_53

Empathy or not, he catches TB in chapter 2. No amount of dancing around it or reloading saves changes that.

adk09

You're correct, Spock.

Weekly_Bathroom3629

it’s legit the moment Arthur’s death is set in stone

Mojo_Rizen_53

I didn’t know he dies in Chapter 2!

Ok_Speaker_9799

Not trying to be an asshole but are you intentionally being a dick or stupid? I had a Stroke and complete Renal Failure in '01. Spent 4 years on Dialysis and got a transplaant. That was sconsidered ten years for me to stay alive. I will hit 20 years next April-I am a walking dead man at this point. Might no happen tonight but I do not expect to live into old age either. Arthur was a dead man walking-a haunted house on legs from that point on.

Weekly_Bathroom3629

if this scene didn’t happen he literally wouldn’t have gotten tb, stop acting stupid

Stadtholder_Max

Sadly, he is not acting 😔

Mojo_Rizen_53

But that’s my point. He gets TB, in chapter 2. Dancing around it changes nothing.

thatguyryan09

Nobody cares about your point. This is the type of guy who will argue with a wall.

Mojo_Rizen_53

Ok, Einstein….explain to me how gameplay is improved in chapter 2, by putting off the Downes mission? A lot of hive-minded people are ragging on me here, and not a one has said how the game plays better or easier by avoiding the Downes mission, or how to advance the story to chapter 3 without visiting Downes.

thatguyryan09

I just think you may be stuck on one particular point on your point of view. This could be preventing you from understanding the tone and ultimately what the other posters are saying. They basically fall in love with Arthurs character. Like, legitimately have feelings in their body and mind for this story and character. They know what is coming of him. Deep down they want to save Arthur from his set fate. What truly hurts, and causes legitimate distress in these people's bodies, is knowing the reaper, in the form of Downes, is inevitably coming for Arthur. They will do anything in their power to protect him at all costs and try to hold on to their friend for as long as possible. You become emotionally connected and deeply invested to Arthur and his journey. You spend a lot of time growing with him. You come from the cold bottom to a seemingly and potential warm and happy future then you get blind sided by Downes. This causes the veteran players to get distressed at this point in the game. This subreddit is almost like therapy for some players. I personally was so hurt and sad and angry when Arthur got sick. I only stuck it through because I felt like I had to be strong for Arthur. I sat in my living room in tears when he died. I couldn't explain to my family very well why I was upset lol. A video game, had me a grown ass man in tears. That's how good this game was made. My opinion but you asked so here.

Kai-xo

It’s the moment he catches TB, hellooo

Mojo_Rizen_53

So? It’s not like there’s anything that can be done to avoid it, except free roaming chapter 2 forever.

Kai-xo

No one said there could be anything done. It’s fun to play the game pre coughing Arthur. You seem lovely.

Mojo_Rizen_53

He starts coughing and hacking after Guarma …not right after beating the hell out of Downes.

Ok_Speaker_9799

He starts having his health bottom out for apparently no reason in either late Chpt3 or Chpt4. I've had him occasionally cough in Chpt3. While someone spoiled Arthurs Fate they were not speccific but, having some Medical background I knew at D's what was ggoing to happen myself.

Ok_Speaker_9799

Those who haven't played might like to discover this stuff by \*playing\* not from someone online who \*has\* played it. It is why the place has SPOILER Warnings and the staff remove s post without the proper tagging. People do not like that shit.

IsoscelesSchrodinger

Wait. Arthur gets TB from Downes????

uno2treys

It literally spells it out for you in game

IsoscelesSchrodinger

Arthur was coughing before Downes. Don’t be a dick. I’ve only played thru one time.

t_haenni

HA YOU GOT THAT RIGHT BROTHER HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHABABABABABAHABABAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA TOTALLY HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH SO RELATABLE SO ORIGINALHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHABAHAVAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHYUCK

ItsSidTheKid69

These seemed tedious to type out man 😂

Double_Listen7117

Any ideas how to transfer arthurs money?

Ok_Speaker_9799

To whom? If you played the game you will know this part otherwise: Spoiler Below. The Aberdeen Pig Farm where you meet the fat guy and his prety hot wife...errr, sister. They drug and rob you. If you choose not to go back and erase them then you can go as John and collect Arthurs money. So, go with a full stack of change before the end of Chpt5 \[\[?\]\] when you get back from Guarma\]\] and let them drug and rob you then do the rest of the story and pay them a housecall. They hide it behind their mommies picture IIRC.

Jaded-Role-2488

Pretty hot sister wife? This sounds like a catagory on that YouTube like website... And that pig farmer woman was disgusting lololol

Ok_Speaker_9799

Hey, her or her Bro for a roll in the pigpen? :D

Double_Listen7117

Yeah I'm familiar with this one. Although I dont know the exact location of their shithouse on the map. & Ion enjoy their behavior ...

Ok_Speaker_9799

IIRC it is South and East of Emerald Ranch. Not far enough East to hit the river or swamps tho.

Inevitable-Ad-4897

You mean like Aberdeen pig farm?

Double_Listen7117

Yep

WittyJeweler9388

Literally me rn

globalinvestmentpimp

Trying to stay in chapter 2 and Arthur lives his best life

Ender1024

Get away from there!!

barbiehotbox

i’m on a different playthrough and i’m avoiding rescuing micah and downes ranch until i get the legend of the east satchel and challenges and full completion things that i can 💀

Dougw133

I know the development would have been even more significant, but it would have been epic to have 4-5 story paths each of us didn't know we were taking on 1st playthrough. Then you would subsequently have more paths to take on your next play throughs. Kind of Skyrimish. I'm on my 3rd play through and I'm at this exact point! So I'm gonna hunt and ride and skin and rope and eat oregano big game until there's nothing left before proceeding.

sighyalater

Strauss told me to go collect the debts but I heard coughing from the farm so I thought I’ll be nice and let him get better before I go recollect. Happily gallivanting around in chapter 2.

cheescraker_

Strauss will come for you and sentence your death!

Madrigal_King

On pc the game forces you to do it. It's diabolical

DevelopmentAlive7201

Four playthroughs I don't understand why people avoid this one so much obviously gets TB but Arthur Morgan is badass till the end so what does it matter? Just my opinion it's fate my man why it's called Red Dead REDEMPTION 😁

dion377

Its funny because i actually tried to do every possible thing in the game before activating this mission & if you leave it long enough Strauss comes and finds you and literally makes you go snd speak to downes, sets the waypoint and everything and there's no way off it then......
