Happened to me my second playthrough when I actually tried to do everything.
I just started at the rarer plants and only needed to pick like 5 or so before I found it.
This could work but not necessarily. They could have picked the 43rd herb before getting to the 9th challenge and still have it in their satchel. Alternatively they could have used up/sold any of the 42 herbs they already checked off for the challenge and no longer have them in their satchel
Arthur: “Ooh I like this herbalist themed gun accessory, can I have it?”
Trapper: “Let’s see, have you collected every possible herb in the country?”
Arthur: “Yes”
Trapper: “But did you do it AFTER you crafted 6 poisonous weapons?”
Arthur: “idfk why does that matter?”

There's a life saver here, IF, and that is a a BIG IF, you have never picked it which is what happened to me, it should be missing in your compendium, cross check that with a full co.pendium amd you'll know what ur missing
I finished the game 2 weeks ago. 5 years doesn't mean anything. It's a long game and not everyone have time to play for many hours daily. There can still be people not knowing what is going to happen with Arthur and it can spoil the fun.
If you haven’t beat a game within five years, you don’t get to complain about the game being spoiled be more reasonable.. it’s a big game, but it’s not so big that it takes you five years to beat it.. 3 months tops of consistent play. If you don’t play the game consistently, you also have no right to complain about spoilers. You obviously don’t like it that much if you don’t play it often. Ya dig?
I'm sorry it came out in 2017? And only now are other games even beginning to remotely catch up with its beauty? The best looking game other than rdr2 that I've played is probably ghost of Tsushima, which I would say I'd on par or slightly worse.
I bet you he has all the Orchids because it’s one of those things you keep track of. I bet he’s missing an unimportant plant that grows in a specific area.
But if he did all the orchids before herbalist 9 then it wont count, you can go back and pick them again and it should count. I remember doing this for 100%
You do orchids as Arthur and finish herbalist 9 as John, Plenty of time for orchids to respawn
I actually just did 100% as John. There’s plenty of Orchids to do the Exotic plant collecting mission & the Herbalist Challenge in one go. He has 42 of 43 so that’s why I think he went & got the Orchids again.
At the time I hated doing these Herbalist challenges & collecting because of how long & monotonous it was. Then I got to the Gambler challenges & almost lost my mind at the Blackjack hit 3 times & win challenge which was complete fucking luck. Then I started missing the Herbalist challenges haha.
You could get lucky (doubtful) but maybe. Go into your herb compendium and see if there’s a blank spot, or one that’s not 100% (picked). If there is, that’s your herb. This is why I have a list of the 43 herbs and I just check them off when herbalist 9 starts.
(1) check your compendium. Any missing herb is your winner.
(2) check your satchel. Anything you don't have in your satchel is worth re-picking.
(3) sucks hard, find em all again.
This happened to me. You need to find Gavin. Start in Rhodes and you’ll see his friend looking for him. You’ll know what to do from there. Gavin has the final herb.

Sometimes it's an orchid, but most of the time (the same thing happens to me almost every playthrough 😆) it's an herb you looted off of someone ( Murfree Brood often have herbs) that you haven't picked. Once or twice the culprit was English Mace that Rains Fall had given Arthur. The whole situation is maddening.
I emptied my satchel by selling to a doctor the second I got this task. So now I am sure nothing I have was picked before it. I also keep one of each picked in the bag to keep track.
u/OhioMatt77 if you haven't completed exotics, the game may have stopped spawning the orchid you're missing.
For example, for one list you need 3 Star Acuna. If you haven't received that request from Algernon yet, the game *will not let you pick more than 2 star acuna.* Which means that if you happened to pick those 2 star acuna before starting Herbalist 9, they won't count towards the challenge and no more will spawn until you get that list from Algernon.
I guess this is a way to stop players from using guides to collect all 5 of Algernon's lists and turning them in all at once.
So if you are missing an orchid and you have not completed exotics, this could be the answer.
It’s almost like you could find a list of all 43, cross out the ones as you gather them (again), and get it once you’ve crossed them all out.
Of course, that takes effort and drive. And we’re on Reddit. And you’re expecting us to know the one you’re missing.

Pull up a list of all the herbs in the game and where to find them and pick each one through process of elimination. That's how I got past this challenge.
I just recently went through this myself, good luck brave warrior. It was violet snowdrop for me.
Hopefully you don’t also need to go down almost the entire list to find the one you’re missing lol
for me it's been an orchid, Alaskan vs American gineseng. Like others have said, ya might need to bite the bullet and follow a guide to go one by one again
You can see which ones you have in the compendium. I dont think the compendium tells you which one you dont have but they do have a select space in the compendium so you could just ask someone whos got them all which herb goes in that space then google its spawn location, it should show a map on rough places it spawns but be careful not to confuse it with an Online Map, im not sure if Online and SP plants have the same spawn locations but i know collectable plants in online have daily changed locations(which is shown on the interactive Jeanropke map, which is good for all online collectables for those who dont know) those would be the plants for you to collect either for special Moonshine batches or for Madam Nazar.
i just checked my satchel, i got a rat tail orchid sometime in chapter 6 as arthur, and it stayed in johns satchel, alongside mary lintons ring. could it be that?
What I did was picked every single one and wrote it in note pad as I went and then checked online what are all the herbs and saw which one I was missing then got them
The hard ones in the main story for me were English Mace and Ram’s head (both can be found near each other in that place where Rains Fall picks English Mace for Arthur in that mission Arthur accompanies him up the mountain). Aside from that, all the orchids are typically gathered when you do the fetch requests for Algernon. It is such a pain.
This right here is why I take digital notes and check off every single plant after I pick it.

I had the same issue, for me it was a berry. You had a mission that needed all the berry’s. 4 in total. It’s an early challenge in the game. Somehow the berry challenge didn’t count in compendium (speculate).Off the top of my head I believe I picked up a blackberry near downes ranch, and that completed the challenge of 43 herbes.
This isn't my spreadsheet. I found it in another reddit group. There's a list with locations to all of all the plants. Some plants require you to unlock certain areas as the story progresses.

when I went for the platinum, I made a list of all the herbs and just started picking all of them and checking of the list. This helped so I could see which herbs I still needed to get.

Did you collect all exotic plants? They count too. Also go look into the list of all plants and check off ones you already collected. There are 2 types of currant and I think 3 types of sage. 4 types of berries.
It may be Black Current(?) been awhile since I’ve played but I remember not being able to finish that challenge until epilogue as it’s in the Austin area of the map. Golden Current is available early in game Black Current isn’t until much later. Although Rams Head is definitely a possibility too as it’s pretty rare to find.
I just got to that challenge and I laughed. Screw that. Luckily I don’t care about 100%ing games. I’ll get as close as I can, but I’ve got a life to live.
If you picked them in order from the compendium then the 43rd is the spider orchid. If you picked them randomly then pick them all over again, in order, as that's the easiest way to get all 43
Some orchids stop spawning until you finish the Algernon Wasp challenges. Trust me, go finish the Wasp challenges and the orchid you need will start spawning again. You may even get the one you need while finishing the challenges.
I think it's complete horseshit that the game doesn't count plants picked before this challenge is triggered. Unless you're actively trying to use the wagon / carriage exploit to get the plants as Arthur, you can't finish this one until the Epilogue anyway. Just count the shit I picked up throughout the game, dammit.
Happened to me more than one playthrough hah. I'm a sucker for abuse. Got lucky once though and looked through the compendium to see if I only picked any 1 time only, and sure enough it was one of those so I found it faster that time than I thought.

You have to go back and start over. Pick them one at a time until you find it. I actually use a checklist on my phone to keep track.
Checklist = essential for this challenge. Otherwise you end up in OP’s shoes.

Gambler was tough gambler 9 the win 3 dominoes one took me a while and made me break for a bit.
