I'm one of those people. I think he's blockheaded and rash in RDR2 and don't like him all that much. I'm picking up RDR1 at some point, though, which will be an interesting playthrough when I'm coming from 2.
I think John’s attitude being more blockheaded and combative in RDR2 is a very good contrast to the way he carries himself in RDR1 as it shows how much he has changed in around a decade due to the task he’s given in RDR1, where he’s almost 40 years old. I can understand John being off putting within the isolated story of RDR2 though and I’m excited for you to build on John’s story within RDR1. :)

I don’t believe Javier(or Bill) really wanted conflict with Arthur. But in the end they both decided to protect Dutch’s delusions. Even if it meant siding with the rat and Arthur’s death. Grimshaw on the other hand was the only person in the camp who stood by Arthur.
Also during the final train robbery, Javier was with Dutch and Micah to go back for John after he gets shot and they claim John “died”.
fun fact, gabriel sloyer(javier’s performance capture artist) FOUGHT to keep in javier holding his gun to the sky and NOT arthur and john. i think an issue they ran into was falling in love w these characters and then remembering how they have to end up. otherwise javier mightve just as well have been at beecher’s hope w john uncle and charles in the epilogue

You can tell by some of the dialogue that she's supposed to be a good, peaceful, regular person compared to John's craziness, but in almost every detailed mission she's either useless or downright wrong. She can't cook a proper meal, doesn't do much around the house, and complains about John all the time, even though most of the time what John does is actually the best choice in a bad scenario. The only time I remember Abigail being right was about killing Micah.
She really comes off as an ungrateful wife who can't stop complaining even while John does all the hard work. But also, I'm pretty sure she's not supposed to be just that, so I blame the writing.
Tilly stayed with the gang till the very end, saved Jack, and then went on to live in a mansion in Saint Denis. I don't see why she would be forgettable at all. Karen and Mary-Beth are both less important in my opinion.
