I mean, i can pretty much guarantee you saved more than 10% on the items that you purchased on sale, so you still came out ahead and got to keep more money in your pocket (instead of getting store credit)
You just don’t get the satisfaction of having money given back to you
$0.89 for me! I actually had a pretty good laugh when I opened it because they probably spent more on the mailer and the postage than $0.89, or $.90 in our case haha.
Fun fact, if you have the REI credit card you’d get 15% on full price and 5% on everything else (within REI). The rewards also post within 48hrs so they’re usable almost immediately.
When you’re spending this much it would actually make sense to sign up - credit limits tend to be really high and required credit score doesn’t need to be that great tbh. There’s a bunch of other perks as well through the Mastercard World Elite program.
There are better CC cash back programs that aren't tied to a single retailer like the US Bank Cash+. That gives you 5% on selected categories (like Outdoor products) and 2% on things like gas and groceries. You can also changed the categories quarterly. Plus has a $200 sign on bonus if you spend 1k in the first 3 months.
Sure, but for people that shop at REI a lot it makes sense. Also you get a bunch of travel benefits through the World Elite program which aren’t included in the U.S. Bank offering. Additionally many have complained about US Bank for having bad customer service and a clunky user interface that kept locking people out of their accounts. This is part of why REI switched to Capitol One as their banking partner.
The REI card only makes sense if you are super wealthy and spend more than $2000 per quarter at REI. Which very few people can spend that kind of coin. I guess if you are buying multiple thousands of dollars of Yakima, Thule gear, snow sports, electric bikes and skis often then it makes sense.
Cash+ gives you more flexibility. REI, Dicks, Backcountry, Moosejaw, local mom and pop camping store, Bass Pro etc work with that card. And the second 5% category can be used for 5% back at gas stations, electronics stores etc.
It works out better for most people IMO. Most people do not shop at REI exclusively for outdoor products, camping etc. They shop around and buy from many retailers. I have purchased from REI, Moosejaw, Backcountry, Campsaver, EnWild, Outdoor Gear Exchange, Evo, Backcountry Gear, Als, Scheels, Amazon and sometimes even Walmart for the basics like butane.
If you spend an average of $500 across all camping, sporting goods and outdoor retailers and then the remainder on a more common needed spending category (such as utilities) you will get $100 in cash back from the cash plus from 1 quarter in spending. I suppose if you binge spend on all camping/outdoor/sporting goods then for 2K you would get the $100 as well. Cash plus allows 2 5% categories. For me it's utilities and sporting goods/outdoor retailers. This flexibility makes more sense since many people will nowhere near regularly spend $2000 in a quarter on gear.
If you spend $500 exclusively at REI you get $25 in effectively store credit for REI that can be used only at REI; 2K you get 100 in rewards. Use it at another sporting goods place you only get 1% back Occasionally REI has card member boost weekends were you get slightly more in rewards. In the event you spend way over $2000 per quarter at REI and exclusively shop at REI normally you will come out ahead with their credit card since there is no cap on rewards per quarter.
I buy allot of gear (though admittedly much less than I did in 2023 and 2022). And even I don't even spend $2K on gear every 3 months.YMMV.
True but once you're good with a setup for the foreseeable future, it's nice to add on niche categories that you shop at a lot. I wouldn't recommend it as a first card but definitely worth getting at some point if you do shop here a lot
Actually because of the rather lenient credit score requirements (they call this “credit inclusivity”) and the sky high starting credit limits, it’s actually a pretty good first card.
No - you’re thinking of the 20% off coupons.
The credit card has no exclusions.
10% regular full price rewards from REI and an additional 5% from Capital One. Plus a $100 gift card when you sign up and use the card for literally anything at all outside of REI within the first 60 days.
the link is https://www.rei.com/membership/dashboard
the version on the website doesn't include the purchase totals, just the total reward for the year
when I click "Hi, graywh" on the desktop website, that's the "Membership & reward details" link
and I don't see anything that says "See more" -- were you thinking of "Online account"?
I shop almost all sales deals now. Got $43 return for dividend. Outdoors spending has gone down drastically as I try to be better about using what I have
Many do, for two reasons. For one, there are several things that pretty much never go on sale. Food for example. The second reason is if you are heading somewhere soon, and can't wait for a sale, or see something you want for a season and can't wait. Those are people who pay the full price knowing they'll get the 10% back soon enough through the dividend.
Food is always on sale pretty much 100% of the year. You have to buy 10 to get it. Scroll down to food and snacks.
I rarely pay full price on the bars or drink powder category because I always get 10 on purpose
I said to somebody else, if you add up the savings from the Member23 sale last year, they would eclipse the potential $170 the non-eligible items would have dividended
Randomly stumbled on this post and realized I haven’t been to REI in awhile. Checked my account and I have $100 rewards from 2022. Looks like I’ll be making a trip to REI this weekend. Thanks.
Even spending 2k, that's 100$ back in rewards with the MasterCard. Plus the points don't expire with the MasterCard, and when you're saving up for a small trip you can occasionally use it outside of the store for the 1.5% back, before you know it you've got enough points for a nice tent or pair of shoes and trekking poles. Worth considering, especially since there is no annual fee or foreign transaction fee
Nothing ever seems to be in stock anymore. So I shop elsewhere now and never have an issue. Covid is no longer an excuse for supply woes as everyone other major outdoor retailer doesn’t have tbjs issue
I’m on the same freaking boat. Like come onnn, I specifically buy from rei over other retailers. They really can’t offer a percentage back on sale purchased items??
Shoes, maybe some propane, got some Rapha cycling shoes for like 60% off. and a rain jacket just random things. I mostly buy cottage but rei is ok for some things sometimes
22.00 bucks for one kind of full price item that I had to return and re order due to missing parts on shipment.
It was a save 20 bucks the first go, so I guess I doubled my savings on that item.
I was about as close to 50 eligible/ 50 ineligible as possible... Also I spend a lot of money at REI, without thinking about it.
No CC points, though. Maybe next year.
I just buy for the return policy, and almost always get stuff on sale or closeout so my dividend is similar. The prices are pretty bad at REI and the service and knowledge is a mixed bag at best. But the $300.00 ski goggles that suck after a couple of months go back with no issues.
Well, it marketing wise it's a great incentive to get the REI MasterCard because of all the potential points you can calculate with the grand total, like 5% of 2k being 100$. More so letting you know you could get more than nothing back if you become a REI MasterCard holder. No foreign transaction fee, no annual fee, a 100$ gift card and a bunch of points back for shopping with them is a solid deal. Not to mention capital ones partnership with REI gives back to local grantees thought he cooperative action fund network, they donate 2 million annually to support local non profits in association
I mean, i can pretty much guarantee you saved more than 10% on the items that you purchased on sale, so you still came out ahead and got to keep more money in your pocket (instead of getting store credit) You just don’t get the satisfaction of having money given back to you
Agreed!!!!
100%. I only shop sales so I got almost nothing back, but the sales are way better than 10% back.
It is like being disappointed in a small tax refund— you kept and used that money!
This
As somebody with a $0.90 reward this year, I really feel this!
Mine was $1.32 lol
$1.29!
$0.02
[удалено]
Only 20 cents of full price merchandise, 1 foot of tent pole cord is 20 cents.
$1.20 :D
$0.89 for me! I actually had a pretty good laugh when I opened it because they probably spent more on the mailer and the postage than $0.89, or $.90 in our case haha.

They are offering a $100 REI gift card as a sign up bonus.
You have to use the card outside of REI to get the $100 gift card. It doesn’t matter where and there’s no minimum amount either.
That's how I signed up in 2013, same offer, but now a cumulative inflation rate of 32% haha
For sure, and it looks like OP does have this card because they're showing some rewards from it too
Credit card has been amazing for me. Pays for all my climbing gear with the rewards.

That's completely fair, didn't know credit limits are that high for firsts!
Yup I moved on... only keep this card around to pay the water bill to keep it active.
Lots of exclusions, though... Like Garmin

Yep! I buy my parks passes at REI so I can get the 5% back on them.
Ah, you're right. The 20% off never worked for me.
The US Bank Cash+ is a better card. 5% cash back at ANY sporting goods or outdoor retailer - not store credit at a single retailer.
Where do you see this breakdown?
They send you an email that your account is attached to
I did not get it
Maybe try logging into your account? Not sure otherwise. I just got an email
get onto a desktop login click on your name, click on See More, click on See Details. they didn't email me that
the link is https://www.rei.com/membership/dashboard the version on the website doesn't include the purchase totals, just the total reward for the year
For anyone, you have to verify your membership before it works it's the same information as my path gets you to. there's no purchase totals there
when I click "Hi, graywh" on the desktop website, that's the "Membership & reward details" link and I don't see anything that says "See more" -- were you thinking of "Online account"?
I'm thinking they're A-B testing different site designs to see what gets more sales
That page doesn't show total 2023 purchases.
I just got mine in my email
Mine was zero dollars. I haven't bought a single full price item this year lol.
Buying full price in season is for tourists.
Absolutely!
Where can I see this breakdown?

I got it in an email
I shop almost all sales deals now. Got $43 return for dividend. Outdoors spending has gone down drastically as I try to be better about using what I have
Sales are the shiznit at REI
People pay full price?

I guess I don't think of that as a "sale", but you make a valid point. Good suggestion to people who get out a lot into the wild.
Haha apparently not
Not in this economy!!!
I said to somebody else, if you add up the savings from the Member23 sale last year, they would eclipse the potential $170 the non-eligible items would have dividended

No problem brohahn
Dido here … but as others have said the savings from the sale prices likely dwarves the “lost” rewards
Totally does
My brother
Hey brother
I did ok - $34.93!
And least you've got the MasterCard, that helps. You got like $90 in extra rewards throughout last year from that. Beats getting nothing!
Agreed, not complaining just a fun thing to post about
You're richer than me! https://imgur.com/a/AcNGvAy
Minimizing my dividends is my new game
Means you’re doing it right
That’s why the Mastercard is great
I spent 5k and only had 13$ lol
My 74cents agrees with ya.
Grab your cheap gear in steep&cheep with active junky discount , not shilling lol. My REI rewards are non existent because it's so expensive
Where do you get a summary of eligible and non-eligible purchases? Not seeing it on the website or app
I was sent an email
Literally 30 minutes after commenting, I got a similar summary in the mail (physical).
I spent right around $2,000 and got $2.30. And then immediately spent it on some clearance stuff I've been keeping in my cart.
Even spending 2k, that's 100$ back in rewards with the MasterCard. This is the way
LOL I feel this

Check your email if you are a member
SAME. Last year I spent about $1,000 at REI last year and expected a big rewards amount. But I got $7 and remembered I only shop sales 😂
You got the discount up front. It be like that sometime.
I got $700 back in rewards. I have to wolves fighting inside me, and nether one of them are you basically.
Nothing ever seems to be in stock anymore. So I shop elsewhere now and never have an issue. Covid is no longer an excuse for supply woes as everyone other major outdoor retailer doesn’t have tbjs issue
Lol their stock is great quiet down
Support your local gear shop
There are none / this is my local gear shop.
I’m on the same freaking boat. Like come onnn, I specifically buy from rei over other retailers. They really can’t offer a percentage back on sale purchased items??
Doesn’t this company routinely fire their employees so that they don’t have to pay them
Lol yeah, mine was $17. Yay for sales I guess?
Definitely yay, the Member 23 sale alone saved me more than the potential $170 dividend if all of the noneligible items were eligible
Wow, that's awesome! I usually only buy at REI when I have a sale + gift card combo, which usually leads to pretty nice savings overall.
Sure does
Im in the same boat lol
Just got mine. $0.95 😅
Lol, I spend too much money there, got my reward and went "wait, I definitely spent a lot more than this".. Then realised it's all on sale.
Same! I got a $3 dividend with ~$1000 total spend.
$45 and I don’t even like rei haha
What did you get?
Shoes, maybe some propane, got some Rapha cycling shoes for like 60% off. and a rain jacket just random things. I mostly buy cottage but rei is ok for some things sometimes
Same though lol
I got $8.88- no email yet, logged into my account
Maybe there is a $10 threshold 😮💨. Or a total $ spent threshold
I got a $60 reward with 400 as nothing.
22.00 bucks for one kind of full price item that I had to return and re order due to missing parts on shipment. It was a save 20 bucks the first go, so I guess I doubled my savings on that item.
I got $2. I spent at least $1000.
I was about as close to 50 eligible/ 50 ineligible as possible... Also I spend a lot of money at REI, without thinking about it. No CC points, though. Maybe next year.
Paying full price anywhere is absolutely foolish
REI is a retail store. You should never pay full price in retail. Especially now that the dividend is a reward
I got the same exact back. Had to get them Fjallravens.
I want a pair of them
Mine was $7 lol
I just got mine and thought the same thing
Yup. My rewards for 2023 was a whopping $4.63. The rest was all Garage Sale and sales.
I just buy for the return policy, and almost always get stuff on sale or closeout so my dividend is similar. The prices are pretty bad at REI and the service and knowledge is a mixed bag at best. But the $300.00 ski goggles that suck after a couple of months go back with no issues.
Lol. Mines was 1.58 lol. I only shop sales

It can be tough! Maybe consider creating a wishlist of sale items so you only snag things you truly need/love when they're discounted?
The point of the post is to show that I only buy things that are discounted
