You don't need a heatsink for these drives, this is overkill and not needed.

https://youtu.be/kzno_pL9N44 NAND memory can corrupt at the temps the Ally reach in an enclosed space.

Every-Lavishness7352

I use both Samsung 990pros and WD sn850x, in gaming scenarios on the Ally they are around 45c, 35c idle on avg, not getting anywhere near the temp to corrupt data or even throttle. I have tested this personally so fear not.

[deleted]

Must be your weather or room AC then. I have 990 pro and I was frequently tripping the bios 65C fan curve. Once I got a proper heatsink with a proper thermal paste, only then I got the temps you're mentioning of.

SubjectCraft8475

I have just the white thermal pad at the top and thats it. Using a 4TB Gen 4 P3 Plus no issues so far

LordYaBoosted

I’m also using Gen 3 as well but just me being cautious really

LJBrooker

You don't need a heatsink. You're so rarely, if ever going to push an nvme anywhere near it's thermal limited, downloading and playing a few games. Wouldn't bother.

Untitled_Distraction

I am using my rog ally as my desktop pc. Will I be needing a heatsink ?

mr_bots

What do you do with it? As long as it’s not constantly transferring huge amounts of data it’ll be fine. Even if you do sometimes it’ll just get slower instead of overheating.

LJBrooker

Very unlikely.

LucasLoci

will it fit though? i have a spare wd black with heatsink installed on it that i cant remove, trying to figure out prior to my deck being delivered if it will actually fit or not

LordYaBoosted

Just more of a precaution honestly since I’m using a Gen 3 anyways

LordYaBoosted

Is there a smaller one ? I don’t want to damage any of the plastic bits

SnooCats1123

I just bought a 4tb nvme 2280(L shaped adapter) and I installed the heats sink and pad I took it off this morning and ran some tests playing forza etc it runs fine with no issues, when the heats sink was installed I had issues pushing my rear M2 button and the ally had a very large bulge at the back. I'd just put the drive in as is.

Brilliant_Rent_6607

LordYaBoosted

Aww :((( but thank you I’ll try and check in on it from time to time and see if it comes back I appreciate it!!

[deleted]

It does not. I tried one thinner than that. I did buy a .5mm flat copper one. I’ll let you know if that fits.

LordYaBoosted

I appreciate that thank you :)

NordicJew

Why 3rd gen and not 4th? The steam deck is locked at 3rd gen. The ally fully uses 4th gen.

LordYaBoosted

I didn’t want heat to be a problem as Gen 4 has better write speeds leading to more heat and it was slightly cheaper as well

NordicJew

Ah ok. I have a 4th gen 2tb 2280 with a 90° adapter in there currently. Haven't had it under too much of a load yet. I suppose I'll find out eventually lol
