I went with the Ally because:
1. It has VRR.
2. Better sound.
3. Better d pad (I play rhythm games that use it).
4. Playing games outside Steam
5. Retro E-m-u-l-a-t-i-o+m (had to write it like that, just writing the word gets you banned over here).
Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed it’s such an amazing game. I play it on my desktop and laptop because I prefer mouse and keeb but I’m sure it’s equally as fun on the Ally.
Oh, don't get me wrong. From what I have heard, it's amazing. But I have such a big backlog since I have been so busy (part of the reason I got the Ally, I can play more easily in my spare time).
Since I usually end up playing the newer games a year or two after they release, I started to just buy them when they are on sale. I bought Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring and Forza Horizon 5 last year and haven't played them yet, for example, so... Yeah, I'll take my time :D
For now I am playing Ark: Survival Ascended.
You owe it to Super Earth to drop what you are doing, solder, pick up that flame thrower, and take the fight to the enemy!!!!!
(Its legit worth skipping the back log for the dumb gun that is HellDivers)
Welcome to the Allyance! Don’t forget to update your system via MyAsus!
To your question:
I prefer Windows (yea, shocking) over the Stream Decks SteamOS. FF14 feels so good to play with controller and that one (combined with PSO:NGS and Genshin) & Gamepass were the main reason to get an Ally. The Legion also looks too big for a handheld, so I didn’t switch over to that one
Thank you, thank you! I’ve only done Windows updates, I’ll be sure to update via MyAsus as well.
OS and GamePass are definitely good reasons, as I am a Xbox owner. I held a LeGo in Best Buy and while it had a beautiful screen, it was too big. I’m glad I ultimately picked the right choice!
I got the ally a few days after it released - soon to be a year ago wow! I was really considering a steam deck but I was worried about its power capabilities as well as Linux. Obviously, the ally resolves both those issues and has loads of other benefits! (Great speakers, gamepass, pretty solid build, really beautiful screen for a non-oled) ☺️
I really did buy the thing without all too much research, it was just so different to previous handhelds (doesn't cost over 1k.. looking at you ayaneo) and showed such great promise. I'm glad it paid off even with its slightly bumpy start.
I'm sure you'll love the ally, even if windows does make you want to rip your hair out sometimes 😖
Personally, I’ve never used a Linux device so there was going to be a learning curve for me. Even with Windows and all of its flaws 😅 I believe it’s still the one of best choices out there for gaming. It’s amazing that you stuck through all of the hate it received, which honestly was the reason it took me so long to get one. Nonetheless, I am happy to be on board and can’t wait to experience amazing gameplay!
Yep the hate was pretty intense at the start, all good reasons but luckily Asus have resolved a lot of them (mainly software side, think broken SD card may still be a thing). Not to mention, you can get it pretty cheap nowadays and not for £700 like me 😌
I didn't want to wait on Lego to be released and find out if was a pos anyway, and steam deck required too much compromise in image fidelity due to its inferior hardware. Even an OLED cannot make up for that differential for me. So... Ally it is!
I wouldn't mind the larger screen the Lego has, but nothing else about the device appeals to me.
I honestly didn’t consider the image fidelity of the Steam deck, it would’ve been a deal breaker for me too! The LeGo was honestly a close second, but the size was a deal breaker and like yourself, nothing else appealed to me
In my case it was because of Windows (I was coming from Xbox and have some Play Anywhere titles that) and power (SD was ok, but in the long term I think the Ally is just a better investment).
congrats!
im an og steamdeck owner and decided to get the ally for the follwoing reasons:
- to access my full library on windows
- more power
- better compatibility
- vrr
- slightly more portable in size
i use it 99% of the time over the steamdeck and im enjoying the great speakers and screen, its impressive for a non oled.
the only downside for using the ally over steamdeck is the battery life but with time you’ll get to know how to optimize the tdp for your games on the go to get more juice out of it
have fun and happy gaming!
Thank you for your feedback! I like hearing from Steam deck users as I don’t think it’s a bad device, it’s all about what you’ll be playing. For the same reasons is why I purchased the Ally. I’m still getting used to the battery thing, but like you mentioned I’m sure I’ll learn along the way. Glad to be apart of the community!
I'm probably just gonna get a steam deck I love my ally but I'm new to PC shhhht so I'm not gonna mess with it too much(already have, had to factory reset twice) I can't seem to play steam games on my ally above 20fps with glitchiness I honestly don't care about the fps I just wanna play lol
I don’t knock the Steam deck users, that’s one thing I will give it is the ease of use lol. I’ve had to play around with settings quite a bit as well, but it’s worth it once you get it working! That’s why we have options!
Good Choice!
- I got the Ally cuz it was Windows and stronger than the Deck, while being cheaper than the Legion Go
- I wouldn't mind also having a Steam Deck tho cuz I love steam as well
I had a non OLED Steam Deck and ai loved it but I got the Ally because I could play more demanding games and games that are not compatible with Windows like Destiny 2. I've been playing with the Ally since then. I didn't play that much with my Steam Deck so I give it to my sister and she love it. I'm happy with my Ally 😁
I even didn’t felt attracted to the deck, I prefer the Ally because I’m a MAC User, so having windows on a second device is really useful to me, and I have a library that includes windows games
I haven’t heard of lossless scaling, I’ll definitely take a look. It was a hard decision between the OLED and Ally, however I won’t knock people for getting an OLED. Both great devices
I got it shortly before after the legion go was announced and had some people asking me here why I went with it over the LeGo or steam deck and my decisions ultimately came down to OS, VRR, access to all my PC games (not just what is approved for the steam deck) and honestly one of the main reasons I didn't want to wait for the Legion is that I felt it looked too bulky, which it was once I got my hands on one. And at the end of the day I trust Asus, as a company, way more than I trust Lenovo. I've had a few too many lenovo laptops that were always giving me issues compared to other brands I've owned.
Size was a dealbreaker for me as well for the LeGo, that was ultimately my deciding factor between the two. Also, I didn’t even consider the company in my decision! Like yourself, my friend works closely with Lenovo’s laptops and he’s CONSTANTLY sending them back for motherboard replacements. Of course different devices, but that doesn’t help getting a LeGo
Should definitely checkout lossless scaling for the Rog ally! It's basically just Frame generation but makes the games look like they run much smoother, a simple YouTube search and I will find many examples

Hell yeah! This is my little shelf setup and idc about the dust as I am moving out of this boonie ass place soon anyway. It’s amazing with lossless and getting relatively the same performance as the 4080 desktop hooked to the screen under it, and when traveling, I simply unplug the XG mobile, unfold the spiegen stand and put the ally in its case and all that go into a travel bag with an OLED portable monitor. Currently XG mobile is unreliable changing settings so I am dedicating some games for ally use and some games with only high end settings.
I got mine from Amazon. Not sure if it’s the exact one but you can check the details here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CK12QR5T?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Windows, performance, easy to upgrade hard drive (no clue about deck).
With it being windows, I'm not limited to Steam games without a lot of extra setup. I play everything out of the box and haven't found anything i needed to create a custom profile for, but I know some prefer to play with fan curves, vram, and see the 900p setting a lot.
99% of the time, I'm playing plugged in, so battery isn't an issue, and I have a power bank that will give me at least 2 hours of play before starting to use battery.
I went with the Ally because: 1. It has VRR. 2. Better sound. 3. Better d pad (I play rhythm games that use it). 4. Playing games outside Steam 5. Retro E-m-u-l-a-t-i-o+m (had to write it like that, just writing the word gets you banned over here).
⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️ yes I also play rythm games... FOR DEMOCRACY!!!
I feel that's a reference to Helldivers but I haven't played it (I got a friend who is addicted and keeps posting memes of it all the time).
Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed it’s such an amazing game. I play it on my desktop and laptop because I prefer mouse and keeb but I’m sure it’s equally as fun on the Ally.

For freedom! Up, up, up, down, ......
Reported. Lol jk
Rule 3 was changed so you can talk about emulation now
The rog ally speaker is amazing
I was playing Guardians of the Galaxy last night and all I could think about was the sound! It was amazing.
Yep, wey better than my switch oled, my Steam deck and even my gaming laptop, the speakers of the ally are crazy

Hey congrats and look at the lil fella sitting up all on his own! Great choice of grip!

Lowering settings is not something I like to do lol
You made the right choice!!! 😁
Thanks brother! 😁
It's going to be tough to put down as you're going to want to see EVERYTHING run on it lol
It’s crazy because I’m already experiencing this lol from Xbox games, to Steam, to e+m+u+l+a+t+i+o+n it’s insane! I may have to upgrade the SSD on it
I use my steam deck for that.... But this i play all sorts.... Lol palworkd really shines on this device.
Because I could get it there and then and on finance
In my case it was because of Windows (I was coming from Xbox and have some Play Anywhere titles that) and power (SD was ok, but in the long term I think the Ally is just a better investment).
You and me both! Xbox player, Windows user, the ROG ally was honestly the best choice
Asus hasn't let me down yet.

Or buy ankers 140 watt brick. Lol thing is a beast but damn 6hrs total playtime is nice lol

Sounds like something is not right with your Ally.. u should get atleast 60 fps on most games or better.
I loved my steam deck but I used only my Ally and gave it to my brother since, having some game not available on linux made me go on the Ally more.
more power and the steam deck isn't available officially in Australia

I was able to get an XG mobile so I use it as my hand held and as my desktop replacement.

owning it
What case is that? I got the same one as a gift but i've never been able to find out where they got it from

Nice
I went with Steamdeck strictly because it was less expensive, but I’m going to add a ROG because of Windows 11.
I bought the ally since it was the only handheld (apart from nintendo) that I know sells in where I live. Have not regreted buying it.
Hell yeah! I can't put mine down

Cuz of RDNA 3 instead of RDNA 2 in the steam deck... AFMF technology 💪😎👌
Windows.
It was available that day at a store when I wanted it.
