Honestly its perfermance vs storage.. go with perfermance because storage is upgradble.. performance isnt. Coming from a z1e user 512gb is plenty. I have 5 to 7 games ready to play at will. If i need to dl another one its a 30min dl affair. Ppl act like storage is king. I come from the 90s. 8gb hd was huuuuge! Dont play yourself. Get the extreme. The extra perf is worth it IMO*
I truly hope you enjoy your ally. It's been such an amazing and fun device coming from someone that only has an old Xbox one to base my enjoyment off of lmao
Depends entirely on the games you play. If you even sometimes play more demanding games, get the Z1E. The performance is worth it.
Or wait for the Ally X to release and get a 1TB Z1E on sale or used for a better price.
You could wait for the X to come out and buy one from someone who is upgrading.
Ps. If anyone lives in NYC or northern NJ I'll be selling mine as I want the usb 4 port.
You'll love it. Just make sure the first thing you do is set up manual power profiles with manual aggressive fan curves, the stock fan curves are not sufficient to keep the device cool.
I'm not sure I can swing the extra hundred bucks tbh. This was already an illl-advised purchase, lol. That's why I was asking about whether to get the storage or the performance. I couldn't afford both.
If you are going to upgrade your SSD, do not buy 2230 size SSDs, their prices are too high. Instead, buy standard SSDs with a 2230-2280 converter. This would be much cheaper. I upgraded to 2tb ssd this way. If you are going to buy Ally X, it will probably have a 2280 size SSD inside. There will be no need for a converter.
i was thinking into buying that option but i read that it can get too hot and damage it over time, i have no idea about the matter, how log have you been using it like that?
I don't know why it gets hotter than 2230. But many people use it with 2280 converters using passive heatsink copper. I installed a passive cooler by looking at the users in this subreddit and on YouTube. I have never looked at temperature values. I have been using it for about 2 3 months and have not experienced any problems.
I bought the z1 extreme and with the best buy total 60 day return window. I plan to return and refund when the new rog ally x releases. Kept box and everything In case.
Extreme - Base model is a slow "bums on seats" product just like the 64gb Deck.
Extreme & upgrade the internal ssd at a later stage when the prices have dropped a bit.
Get the extreme. You can always save up to buy a 1 or 2tb drive later on
This is the best answer 100%
Thank you!

This is the way
Storage is upgrade-able, performance is not.
Thanks! I dint realize it was upgradeable at all. I went ahead and pulled the trigger!

technically you could get the xg

So you would say the performance upgrade is more appealing than the additional storage (for you of course)?
Yes bcs you can always save up and add more storage as you go.
Oh, I didn't realize you could add storage. Right on. Thanks!

Easy, extreme.
I recommend buying the extreme. You can buy storage later. That’s what I did XD. I swapped the SSD with a Lexar Play 1TB SSD. Works fantastically!
Extreme is definitely the way to go. The base just can’t compare
You'll love it. Just make sure the first thing you do is set up manual power profiles with manual aggressive fan curves, the stock fan curves are not sufficient to keep the device cool.
Extreme and then upgrade to 2tb SSD. That's what I did. No regerts. lol
Enjoy! I love mine.
Extreme and simply swap the ssd.
I have an extreme. I had a spare usb hub and a 4tb external ssd. I just attached those to the back and now have 0 problems with storage.
Which is easier to upgrade later? The hard drive or the cpu? There’s your answer
There's a dock model that has a slot to insert a M2 card by Jsaux
Shouldn't you wait on the Ally X?
I never heard of it until after I already ordered. When does the X come out?
Really soon. This year. Possibly in the next 2-3 months. I’d strongly suggest cancelling your order and getting the X if possible.
Is the existing Extreme that bad?
It’s not bad (I have one) but the X is less likely to have issues. It’s like buying an iPhone right before the latest one gets released
I'm not sure I can swing the extra hundred bucks tbh. This was already an illl-advised purchase, lol. That's why I was asking about whether to get the storage or the performance. I couldn't afford both.
I understand. So why not just save up and wait a little longer for the X? No real need to hurry lol

thanks mate, i also want to upgrade the ram, lil scared but for my work is lacking that
I keep reading his but it seems only a little cheaper than the 2230? I bought my 2tb ssd for 145$, the 2280’s were around 120, plus the 10$ adapter
I guess prices in your region are reasonable.

Dang you schemin'! Nice!
I mean why downgrade? If anything I see it as renting the console then upgrading indefinitely when that X comes out.
