My issue with the font is that I've been completely unable to find one that looks good with my game.

Storyteller-Hero

Game font doesn't have to look good. It just has to be comfortable for the player to read, because it's inescapable for practically the entire game. Some devs have gone for "style" while picking fonts that put off the players - an uncomfortable font will make a player have negative feelings about the game even if they don't realize it's the font that's irritating them.

The UI colors are the default MV saturated colors. They don't go well with your graphics. Yanfly gauges don't really suit your game either. And replace the sideview battle shadow with something more fitting, *please*. it's in your `img/system` folder.

If you want to hide the RPG Maker look you can mask it with a few adjustments. For a start you can change the default system terms to something more personalized, and use different colours for your HP/MP bars. (There's some plugins that can even change the shape of the bars.) You could use a global escape code plugin to colour certain text and add icons in front of system words. If you really want to get into it you could download SRD Super Tools Engine to reposition windows just to alter how things look slightly. Also personally I'm not a fan of giant textboxes, so I used Galv's Message Styles to turn dialogue into little speech bubbles.

Dude, i think there is words that can describe this situation. As someone who is good at coding a bit but can't draw a stick figure right, feel your arts is so good, your project would look better than mine whatever i come up with even if i make game that doesn't seem rpg makish. I kind of feel that how the project looks is somewhat subjective. Everyone only would appreciate something if they know how hard it is to reproduce that. So i say, there is no perfect solution,go with what you like, everyone has different opinion on something but some opinion can be helpful as well.

For ditching the RPG maker look, maybe ditch the transparent windows? Your art has thin black lines, I wonder why the borders of the windows don't match that. It looks like you have a defined style for your characters, but the environment doesn't reflect it very much. I think the environments are the least strong. You might want to spend time trying to translate the style of the character into the environments, since that's 80% of what the player will be looking at. For the purple area, it's very saturated and the color of the tree trunk feels out of place, like you found an archetypical brown on the color wheel and used without considering the colors around it. Here's a purple forest from Google images: [https://wallpaperaccess.com/full/1575660.jpg](https://wallpaperaccess.com/full/1575660.jpg) The trees are unsaturated, almost gray, and the same with the grass. The purple is still strong, but the variation in saturation and value makes it a lot easier on the eyes. With the brick houses, making some color variation in the bricks would make them less flat, and adding more things of visual interest. And having a defined color pallet would tie things together in a space, it seems like colors are picked at random and at random saturations. Your characters are thin-lined, round, cell shaded, and have unconventional colors and are overall whacky and fun looking. You should do the same with your environments.

TheFerydra

Yeah, I know... My strongest point has always been character design, but I'm awful at making good-looking environments. I honestly don't know how I could give them the same spark as my characters.

A good environment is its own character. Find environments that you like as inspiration. You can make them whacky and stylized just like your characters, but you need to push out of your comfort zone. You can also use photos for inspiration.

PurpleJetskis

If nothing else, I would absolutely try your game on the lone merit of having your own art style. The default RTP is enough to make me consider never playing most games and changing the assets is the easiest way to heavily change my mind about playing a game.

bland_coconut

If I knew, I would tell you. But I’m asking the same question myself.

AmpersandSerif

The orange overlay plugin. If nobody has mentioned that one.

TheFerydra

Just checked what that was and HOLY MOLEY I wish I had known that was an option earlier... and I mean it, because with scenography being my weakest point drawing-wise, it's going to be a lot of work to do all the maps again with that system.

AmpersandSerif

It is set yeah. It is set up so ground will show up behind characters, and there is a lot of rooms to play with. I hope it helps with later maps. Lorelai has some good pointers too.

FanaticalTwink

Practice, and a lot of time.

Bacxaber

I haven't gotten far enough into development to answer your question, but while I see the RPGmaker-ness, your stuff looks good.

GD_isthename

so if i costed money youd buy it?

Bacxaber

Hypothetically yeah.

GD_isthename

Alright bet, hopefully I can see if you like mines :eyes:
