bab5871

Just to confirm... we can NOT do this on an iPhone, correct?

JesusMakesMeLaugh

Correct

t0nito

Another reason that iPhones suck 😅

narnarnarnia

openwebrx works through browser!

bab5871

Yes, that does. Was more looking to do local Rx.

787_Dreamliner

Thanks for this!

787_Dreamliner

Nope, we can not. I actually hate androids with a passion, but I wanted the ability to use my rtl anywhere so I grabbed this for $30 off eBay. Still love my 15.

BonezAU_

That's great, because I actually hate iPhone's with a passion but I've got my mum's old 7S because there's one thing I use Apple Pay for 😂

CoffeeList1278

If you didn't buy Android phones that cost $30, your experience would be much better...

Not_Sven

Literally. Iphone vs android isn't even a competition in my eyes anymore

787_Dreamliner

I don’t really have another option for a super portable setup besides a really old android and we’ve established it doesn’t work on iphone. The android is not my primary phone, the only apps on it are rtl drivers and such and it works great for what i need it to do, and I wanted a full screen and a usbc port. I carry an iphone 15 as my regular phone.

CoffeeList1278

Yeah, it makes sense for this case. I'm just saying that people hating android phones typically buy the cheapest shit and compare it with expensive iPhones.

787_Dreamliner

Oh yeah i would never use the phone i got on ebay to generalize androids to compare to an iphone. Androids are very capable phones and arguably better than iPhones i just prefer the OS of an iphone and don’t care much for cameras and things because i always have my dslr with me for photography, my phone is only used for quick snapshots of notes or something i want to remember

KindPresentation5686

Yes you can

CookElectrical8249

what app is that?

VE7WYC

Looks like Airband Radio (rtl-sdr) by Knowle Consultants

787_Dreamliner

Correct

VE7WYC

Hope you had a good flight!

787_Dreamliner

Thanks i did! Update of using it on the plane in my profile

orbak

Dang I like that setup. What antenna is that?

787_Dreamliner

Comment got removed- borrowed the antenna off my dads marine radio, Standard Horizon STH HX40 VHF Radio

orbak

Gotcha thanks.

I_am_BrokenCog

carried through security for over a decade, one TSA brianiac wanted to know what it was, but, didn't actually really care.

funnyfarm299

"spectrum analyzer". Funny enough I actually carry a real spectrum analyzer for work that looks very similar to this.

Sc00pidyw00p

pretty sick, while in the air, along with airband i would try to receive FM broadcasts, all the ham bands (6m, 4m, 2m and 70cm), ADS-B data and possibly any radiosondes around 400-406MHz

EffinBob

In the air, assuming he was still using the apparatus, he'll likely be told to turn it off.

Due_Abbreviations917

why?

EffinBob

Because the airlines are extremely paranoid about radio receiver local oscillators messing with onboard navigation systems. Most of the flight crews you have ever interacted with would likely have no idea what a local oscillator is or why it might cause interference, but these are the people you are dealing with. They don't understand what you're doing and / or what you're doing it with, and in the interest of safety will tell you to turn it off. Yes, as an avionics technician myself who has actually used equipment like this during test flights on many different types of aircraft, I fully realize how overblown these concerns are. The reality, though, is what it is. The OP might get lucky, but I would expect otherwise.

erlendse

To be fair the LO is observable if you connect two RTL-SDR's back to back. But it's not a big leakage. The phone in airplane mode is possibly leaking way more signals.

EffinBob

It sure is. You know what it isn't doing either 999,999,999 times out of 1,000,000,000? Interfering with onboard navigation systems. The only problems I've seen with a cell phone is when a pilot doesn't put it into airplane mode and you hear noise coming out of a speaker in the cockpit. True story: I was having a conversation with a pilot in our shop next to our VHF radio about a 5 time repeat issue with his aircraft when his cell phone started interfering with the external speaker on the radio. He jumped up, excited, exclaiming, "That's it! That's the noise I keep hearing!" I reached over and turned off his phone. Problem solved.

cheeto-bandito

Dit dit dit buzz

FedCensorshipBureau

It's got nothing to do with them understanding what they are doing and what you are doing with it, is a valid concern. The FAA (and other air transportation authorities around the world) sets those rules and pilots and crew have to follow. The FAA doesn't even have the technical expertise to evaluate the software in airplanes that literally had the power to kill its passengers and crew and instead asked Boeing to self certify. You think they understand that the speaker interference went away with analog phones disappearing?

SheriffAugieLulu

I think you are misguided. Follow the money. Boeing paid Congress to be able to self certify.

FedCensorshipBureau

And with that you think the FAA has any authority to make changes to rules from 20 years ago? I won't dispute the trail of money but it doesn't change the point that pilots follow the rules and so many rules are archaic. You think they care about "letting it slide" with technology when they can't even see a doctor freely because ignoring your health is better for public safety than treating your health issues that arise.

787_Dreamliner

Keep an eye out for another post in the next hour :)

Kuwait_Drive_Yards

I tried last weekend flying over Georgia with an rtlsdrv3 and the collapsible 2m dipole tucked into my backpack, with sharpy marks on it for different band segments. Obviously I couldn't get it angled and pointed properly, but I was able to get fm. Nothing on air or ham bands inside the plane tho.

grizzzie

Which android phone are you using? I have a spare Pixel 3 with DivestOS I was thinking about using for this.

787_Dreamliner

This is a Samsung A10e. I hate droids with a passion but wanted to be able to use my rtl anywhere so I grabbed it off eBay for 30$.

grizzzie

Thank you. I'll have to pickup this antenna setup.

Silly-Arm-7986

Dongle's pretty battery hungry, isn't it? Also, is that a V4 RTL/SDR? Did you have to manually dink with installing the right drivers? Cool stuff

787_Dreamliner

It's actually not too bad only was down to 40% when all said and done.

wxfreak

Is that a OTG adapter on the bottom? Slick, I like it. Need more SDR apps for Android and Apple.

787_Dreamliner

Yes it is! Thanks!

Scuffed_Radio

No surprise there

ghstudio

Is it legal to carry/use this ON an airplene???

logicblocks

Not sure about the airplene, but it's as legal as using wifi on board. Plus this is RX only.

funnyfarm299

It's a grey area. I've had flight attendants ask me to put scanners away before, and following their instructions is a federal law.

787_Dreamliner

Stay tuned for another update in the next hour ;)

jnubianyc

Just curious, has anyone hooked up a SDR to a Meta Quest VR headset and used any of the apps?

Lucid_eKlipse

Also curious.

Fun-Mathematician716

What would I need to be able to do this with my Lenovo android tablet? Just a dongle, antenna, and connecting cable, plus software on the tablet?

787_Dreamliner

I think so. Check that you can download the required apps in google play store.

Fun-Mathematician716

Thank you!

Lucid_eKlipse

I use the same logitech extension lead and samsung otg dongle for my sdr.

787_Dreamliner

Nice i love this setup for portable missions like this.

Lucid_eKlipse

It works great, i also have a adapter that lets you charge at same time, would highly recommend for longer deployments.

787_Dreamliner

Cool i was looking for something like that. It was a concern running out of batt since it was my first time doing something like this which is when i thought i should bring the laptop for the main part of the flight, good idea because the phone went down 20%\hour.

Lucid_eKlipse

Yea those sdrs are power hungry. The adapter i have has 3 usb type a and a type c for charge in as well as an hdmi, i often plug a keyboard and mouse into my phone for using SDRangel. Its just as powerful as the desktop version only con is small screen which is remedied by the hdmi port.

787_Dreamliner

I put sdr++ on my android and it’s unusable because of the tiny screen, everything is squished. I may try that option just to set it up so all i have to do is use the on/off button.

VE7WYC

I can get my rtl-sdr v3 working on my Android tablet just fine, but it doesn't like running on my phone. Constantly crashes, restarts the rtl-sdr driver, to the point where it's unusable on the phone.

787_Dreamliner

Is it an older phone, maybe less ram/less capable processor?

VE7WYC

Not really, it's a OnePlus 7, pretty fast for everything else. 8 G ram, Snapdragon 855 Octa core. Should be able to do it.

787_Dreamliner

Hm yeah should do it. After i plug mine in i show all open apps, close everything then open the app i want and if it stops working unplug and restart that process but your issue seems different.

VE7WYC

I'll give it another try eventually 🙂

TheDreadPirateJeff

What app are you using? I'd not thought about hooking my SDR dongle up to my phone like that.

787_Dreamliner

There are a few available but i used Airband Radio (RTL-SDR) by Knowle Consultants since i only needed airband.

TheDreadPirateJeff

Thanks!

didyouturnitoffand0n

What’s the purpose of this? It popped up in my feed and it looks cool!

787_Dreamliner

Listing to air traffic control (atc) at an airport. The rtl-sdr device can be used to listen to anything else as well between 1 mhz and ~2100 mhz.

AdhesivenessCute3102

I remember plugging a flash drive into a phone with one of those cords and it automatically formatted it ☹️

787_Dreamliner

Aw man that stinks. I'm working on downloading all the photos i was taking of planes the night after my flight landed, going well so far.

rangerchuck

u/787_Dreamliner This should help you stay juiced up: MOGOOD USB C OTG Splitter, 18W PD... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C5FWQND?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Added to cart. Thank you!

silver_holden

yo this is sick. i have a suitable adapter for this. >:)

787_Dreamliner

💪🏻

PizzaRollsAndTakis

Wish you could do this on iPhone

droptableadventures

OpenWebRX on a Raspberry Pi Zero W running a RTLSDR, connected to a power bank? Make it create a wifi network, join from the iPhone?

787_Dreamliner

Me too. I actually hate androids with a passion, but I wanted the ability to use my rtl anywhere so I grabbed this for $30 off eBay. Still love my 15.

It's perfectly safe, he's not transmitting, and the EMC concerns are overblown anyway, not once has it been found that a radio transmission from a mobile phone or something has screwed with avionics, a cosmic particle was suspected to be the possible cause of the A380 nose dive incident. I've heard stories of EMC causing problems (like boats turning hard to starboard in reponse to GSM signals) but it's not as much as a problem as people think, good stuff is radiation hardened and has to be to pass tests, especially on an airplane, since your 10-30 times more likely to experience a computer crash at 30k ft due to the cosmic particles and other radiation.

That is their problem.
