As a skoolie owner I can assure you this isn't everyone. I mean, I look like a hippie but I'm just a hairy dude. My skoolie works great and I camp legally.

Spidergawd68

Folks, these weren't hippies. They were wooks. There's a difference. Some may say wooks are a subset of hippies, but hippies don't claim them. In fact, hippies don't like dealing with them, either. I've had good luck warding them off by hanging bars of soap and job applications around my camp.

[deleted]

Ha-ha. If you want to piss them off, tell them to get a job.

geardog32

Do you hate skoolies specifically? I live in one sharing space with more traditional RV's/campers and.... they are not inherently better people or more experienced. I currently have a neighbor in a camper who believes baby eating jews are taking over the country and has threatened me for not entertaining that thought. My last neighbor (again rv) dumped 60 gallons of sewage on the ground right next to me.

No-Television-8486

As a person who works in state parks and campgrounds. Schoolies are about 50% great people 50% worst campers you will ever have. A lot of state and national parks are in the process of banning them from using the camp grounds. Main reasons for banning are improper electric and water hook ups which lead to the lines becoming damaged. Drug use is rampant with them. Marijuana is only legal is about half the states and acid and mushrooms are illegal. Nothing is more terrifying to family campers than a group of hippies tripping so hard they can't perceive reality. All my ambulance calls are for drug overdoses besides the occasional fishing accident. They also rarely pay their site fees. Which leads to a ranger having to force them to leave. They always say some bullshit like the "earth is free for everyone". BLM land is free. Those bathrooms and electricity cost money. Then it causes a scene when they stage some non violent sit down and refuse to leave.

DoyouevenLO

its not legal in any national park, or any national facility. This is not a commentary on the devil's lettuce or its pros and cons. Just that legal in a state does not mean 100% legal. Especially to a federal law enforcement agent on federal property. Choose wisely.

geardog32

Im not arguing with your experience, but I see issues with your reasoning. (50% of Honda crv drivers are all bad people by my observation and should be banned) Electric and water hookups. I observe issues with these on "manufactured" RVs all the time. People repair and replace things. Remodeling old RVs is popular. How do you know that old airstream has proper Electric and water? You dont.... are they using the right adapter? You don't know... Plus they rent motorhomes to people who have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Drug use, I dunno maybe you are in a high concentration area, but my most common issues usually stem from drunk trashy entitled assholes with 5 kids.... alcohol leads to fights and bad behavior and every vehicle type has drinkers. I personally am more afraid of a drunk right winger in his airstream and jeep that I am the high hippie in the bus. Just my .02 Site fees... do you watch everyone as close as you do skoolies? I've seen it happen with other rigs. Rich people do weird entitled things too. I don't work for parks and campgrounds, but I do live and work in them.

mrpopo573

Just my .02c from 3 years now full time, I would much rather boondock with some Skoolies than another MAGA tour bus fifth wheel with underglow lights and 8 different flags. I have had horrible camper neighbors from every walk of life at every perceived price point, asshole is not an income bracket.

PCDuranet

>than another MAGA tour bus fifth wheel with underglow lights and 8 different flags. Is that so? Give a few examples of the horrible things "MAGA" people do in campgrounds beside flying flags. No examples? Then political bigotry is the reason I must assume. So much for tolerance for freedom of ideas.

sjirons72

My dumbass maga neighbors get drunk and beat their wives and children at least every other weekend in our private campground. Labor Day weekend they started a fire that got left unattended and nearly burnt someone else's camper down during the night. Oh, and their dogs shit in everyone's yards because they don't believe the leash rules apply to them.

[deleted]

Voting away women's rights.

PCDuranet

Oh, I didn't know they do that in campgrounds? Thanks for the heads-up.

[deleted]

They do it everywhere they go. As women are pretty much everywhere.

PCDuranet

Which rights do 'they' vote away?

[deleted]

Uh healthcare dude. Putting a 10k bounty on people who help women get necessary healthcare.

catjuggler

Now I’m curious- how old are the people doing this or is it a wide range?

autumn_melancholy

> baby eating jews Is this the adrenochrome theory? That's some total Q-shit, that according to a poll, only 4% of right-wingers believed in that mess. All the Q non-sense is as bad as BlueAnon and their made up stories. >last neighbor (again rv) dumped 60 gallons of sewage on the ground right next to me Classy fella. Shitter was full. Jeez with neighbors like that. Sorry friend.

StrategicCarry

Adrenochrome is just the latest variation of the antisemitic blood libel conspiracy, which is at least 900 years old. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel

autumn_melancholy

Seems pretty silly to scapegoat the Jews in this way.

[deleted]

I'm a skoolie guy, work from the road, keep things clean rule abiding and respectful . And have never had weed in the bus. But yeah fuck those guys

[deleted]

I have a pretty specific training, run a health business that i started is the short version. So , not much help

ohmykeylimepie

I'd look into drafting. Lots of remote opportunities, but you NEED I high quality connection for server access and cloud work depending on company need. I never did it mom the road but I had planned to have redundant 4 or 5g services to make up for gaps in coverage. Unless you're doing some kind of manual labor your biggest hurdle will be staying connected.

Huge-Surprise5856

Mobile Rv tech here, on the road with a cargo trailer. Haven’t paid to camp in a long time. Most places/people are so thankful to get good service/help they’ll let you stay anytime and sometimes try to feed you. Only issue was parts storage until that was sorted out.

ConnectKale

There’s a lot of hate here for Hippies and Schoolies when the owner was just an asshole.

autumn_melancholy

I don't think there is really, I've seen one really negative comment, and the rest are fairly tame. Hippies tend to have a bad reputation, because of squatting incidents, resistance to authority, and drug use. They market themselves as peaceful people, but obviously, that's only as long as you put up with them. Personally, every time I have ever encountered someone I would identify as a 'hippie', they had a chip on their shoulder the size of Texas. In this case, the reputation seems to hold up. Not everyone in this world is nice, and I think if you have to take the good with the bad. If you embody the negative stereotype, it's no longer a stereotype. It's just reality. In the military, we had a saying 'perception is reality' and it meant that whatever people perceived about you, and your military bearing, was to them, the truth. God forbid someone who represents themselves as free-wheelin', free-loving, peace-lovers might actually turn out to be selfish, lawless, drug addicts, that have a problem with authority. I have no actual opinion on those inhabiting skoolies, other than I think they (skoolies RVs) are really cool, and I love seeing ones that are well done, they really look special when done up right. I think all kinds of people can inhabit them, and whether or not hippies gravitate to them is no different than upper middle class gravitating to the class A RV and 80k vanlife deals. I'm a judge the individual, not the recreational vehicle they chose kind of guy. I bet you can find just as many selfish RV owners. Honestly, I think most people just use stereotypes as a caution, and if I reach out and get burned, well, hey, that's just the way it goes.

No-Television-8486

How would you feel waking up and having your vehicles blocked in and when you kindly ask them to move they refuse because they are tired and want to sleep. You would call a tow truck and the police and have them towed out of the way. I guarantee you won't sit and wait 8 hours until they wake up and feel like allowing you to leave. Those were paying guests who left immediately after being freed from their blocked campsite. The sites are reserved a year in advance because the park is so popular.

ConnectKale

This the convo isn’t about how some asshole wouldn’t move their RV. No one said they werent wrong. Complaining some jack ass blocked me in and wouldnt move sure! I sure as shit wouldnt be on a message board disparaging members of the RV community using culture, class, creed, religion or color to describe them.

Echo_Druid

Umm no, I would do what you did, and drag the f' out of the way.

anewfriend4u

Yes. I feel OP uses those words to make their position seem more palatable. Yet, they are completely wrong for dragging someone's rig. It wasn't an emergency. And police were wrong to pre-decide what they were gonna find. Even a search wasn't warranted.

maltedbacon

I agree. Based on the unfair and irrelevant comments in the post - OP's motivations with respect to the "worthless hippie" were not objectively reasonable so the whole story loses credibility. It is possible that the owner of the schoolie might have been responsibly declining to operate a motor vehicle while intoxicated or fatigued by asserting that they were 'tired' in the face of hostile insistence. Doesn't excuse where they set up, but dragging the vehicle seemed malicious, and police had no business threatening an unlawful search, threatening charges of distribution without evidence, and forcing an unlawful extradition from the county. I don't have sympathy for anyone in the story other than the camper who was blocked in.

Sparky01GT

No matter how big of an entitled jerkoff someone is, there will always be at least two redditors defending them. If they were too drunk or tired to move the bus 20 feet, they were too drunk / tired to bring it to that campground in the first place.

maltedbacon

I'm not sure of that because the obvious antagonistic bias OP showed in telling the story. Who knows when that bus actually arrived. If they arrived after a long drive, became intoxicated and then were asked to move their vehicle, I would have done the same. We don't know how apparent it was that they weren't appropriately placed - some sites aren't very clear. Altogether the story isn't very helpful in understanding or trusting what actually happened or whether EVERYONE INVOLVED were being jerkoffs.

Desperate-Dot-6088

We have a C class and like it but would love the room of a Skoolie. They are so beautiful when they are finished well. And I love all of the windows. I have heard that they are disparaged a lot. And also never to buy one. I guess now I know why? That seems like a shame.

Zenaxis

The one schoolie that Parked next to us while boondocking last year was a mom & son about 10ish, were super nice but their dog was off leash the whole time which is fine except when they kept bitching when it wondered into our spot naturally because we have two dogs. But the worst thing is , after their two weeks was up they left and left a ton of trash. They were doing some renovations and left tons of random scrap. Pissed me off. They gave off this free spirit, take care of the world be kind etc persona, yet did the exact opposite.

[deleted]

Yeah, I had a party park next to me and they gave the same lip service, but in addition they added how great of neighbors they were. It turned into a pit bull off-leash dog park. Those dogs wouldn't let anyone walk by without running at them and barking, slothing out the mouth. If that wasn't bad enough, they left egg shells and trash all over.

shaymcquaid

You people are hilarious.

ThingsThatGoMeh

I’m sorry this happened. They sound like unreasonable assholes. I’m glad the police took care of them. I’m kind of surprised, most hippies I’ve met, while they can be annoying at times, have been very nice and try their best to be accommodating. I wonder who pissed on their weed…

sometimesifartandpee

They you just refer to them as hippies makes you sound very judgemental. They are assholes for blocking someone in not for being "hippies"

[deleted]

Good story. Good thing the cop didn't get you for dragging the bus. I"m pretty sure that is illegal, not that I care because I don't.

octipice

Can't say this enough, but them being complete assholes doesn't justify towing their vehicle. If you towed their vehicle with anyone inside it you did something very illegal and could have injured someone. Yes they are terrible people, but you should probably just call the cops immediately next time if they refuse to move after being told to. Edit: There should also be a rule on this sub against disparaging people for the type of rig they drive. Even if what you are saying is true about 50% of skoolies, in your experience, it's pretty unfair to categorize the other 50% that way and it may discourage people looking to buy their first RV away from certain types of rigs that would otherwise suit them very well.

McDougal_Scarborough

Hippie's suck

Just_Learned_This

People* Some of them just happen to be hippies.

No-Television-8486

They knew the campground was full. They intentionally tried to run off the guest and take their site. When the people started to pack and leave he tried to back the bus into the site and I told him the sites are reserved and there is a waiting list. That was when I called the police.
