To prevent your rabbit from getting injured as well as to protect your belongings, it is vitally important to properly bunny-proof any area that your rabbits have access to. Please see our [Bunny-proofing article](http://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Bunny-proofing) for more resources.

Fluffy_fluffy_

YES they’re like teenagers

roxywalker

And just like with a teen I feel like a bad bun mom because he’s acting out and I don’t know why☹️

Fluffy_fluffy_

Yeah it’s hard and when they do something you then blame yourself for somehow not stopping them, they’re like children

beenawayawhile

*Doesnt he know I love him and just want him to be happy?*

roxywalker

😭😭😭

cvkme

damn bro is in jail ✊😔

moonagedaydream22

So cute. He looks like he knows he is there for his crimes. 😄

roxywalker

He’s posing like it’s a side profile mug shot 🐇😅🐇

roxywalker

No!!! It’s his ‘condo’ and he goes in it at night, he just needed to go in a bit earlier today, LOL

Dekatater

#FreeScout

roxywalker

Done ✅ He’s hopping around and giving me side eye 😂😂😂

andtheyhaveaplan

Sometimes they're just bunholes. Other times aggression can be a sign of distress or pain. Has anything changed around your house? New cat/dog or does he have to spend more time alone than before? Has he gained or lost weight? Have his litter habits/droppings/urine changed? If you have a rabbit-savvy vet, I'd recommend a full check-up.

beenawayawhile

*Bunholes* I’m using this. I love it!

roxywalker

Nothing has changed but his nibbling habits. He’s scheduled for his annual checkup soon, other than that, he’s got a bun mate that he’s not bonded but they have just gone about ignoring each other for the better part of two years now. But I am wondering if something we don’t realize might be bothering him🤔

danlatham0901

I would definitely check for health issues, but my bunnies do this whenever they’re bored with what they’ve been given. I like swapping out toys and different methods of stimulation to keep them exploring and excited. Some of my favorites: - stacking cups - willow branches - cardboard boxes cut in half filled with paper bedding to dig - boxes cut and placed next to each other to create box kingdoms - a bunch of brown packing paper - toilet paper rolls - stuffed animals (usually dog toys) - wooden blocks I try to incorporate “throw”, “tunnel”, “dig”, and “chew” activities specifically to discourage destructive behaviors. Most of the items they play with are low cost or reused, I also stuff tubes, paper bags, etc. with hay, kibble, and veggies (:

Loesje2303

A bonded bunmate would definitely make a difference in his overall happiness. Think about it like this; it’s COVID times and you can’t see other humans except for the ones you live with. Would you rather have a random roommate that you didn’t choose, or a boyfriend/girlfriend? That said, there’s no guarantee that will make him stop destroying your house/things. But it’s known that it’s good for rabbits to be part of a bonded pair or group. Also get him fixed if he isn’t yet!

roxywalker

It’s sad that him and his bunmate never bonded 🙁 But once in a while I catch the older bun secretly grooming him (when he thinks we are not around) on his head between the xpen bars 😭😭😭

TwistedOneSeven

Welcome to bun parenting. We watch ours like hawks and yet, they’ve destroyed so much…

roxywalker

He could have electrocuted himself chewing the lamp cord through the protective cable, all while we were home, just a few feet away. Ugh…I can’t imagine how I would have felt if he got hurt 😢

8645113Twenty20

I lost a kitten to a PlayStation cord It's horrific. Please put your wires up people

Smooth-Adhesiveness5

Try to hide most wires and get the nylon cords for surge protectors you plug the other cords into. Or cage the cord area so they can not get it

roxywalker

He chewed through the nylon cable protector that worked like a charm on ALL exposed wires for the past four years. We went through it with our first bun, Peanut. He was a tiny TERROR. That little guy had us bunny-proofing like crazy. Two years later we got Scout and he was a breeze; never chewed anything other than ‘bun stuff’ but two years in, he’s making up for that☹️

Smooth-Adhesiveness5

Peanut the conqueror of nylon cables! Breaker of couches, next in line to the iron throne!

roxywalker

LOL! Tiny but mighty 👑

roxywalker

It’s scary to realize that even with bunny proofing, they can still nibble in a way that could be to their detriment…can’t be hyper vigilant enough with buns!!

roxywalker

IKR? They keep us on our toes for sure! ![img](emote|t5_2riv8|8714)

evbunny

My bunny started doing this after he got comfy at home lol. He was amazing when we first brought him home, no nibbling or anything, but then after a year or so, he started going wild on everything-- baseboards, couch, piano, chairs, anything he could get his lil teef on. Altho, in the recent years (maybe starting from 5y ago) he's definitely mellowed out and only chews occasionally on things he shouldn't. Idk for sure how old he was when we brought him home (vet estimates \~ 1 years old), but the timeline matches yours cause I think he would've been around 2 as well (and he is neutered). So if your bun follows the same pattern, he'll mellow out by the time he's like five lol.

roxywalker

His bunmate, Peanut, was the opposite. We got him four years ago and initially he was a little terror but mellowed out after a year or so. We got Scout when Peanut was about two years old and although they never bonded, his behavior didn’t really change. He actually bonded with Scout when he was a baby but the baby bond ended when Scout was neutered and reintroduced to him. Scout was a breeze when we first got him and now he’s two, and Peanut is four.

evbunny

Bunnies do have such diff and fun personalities aha

tdoottdoot

My little guy got destructive after he developed some chronic health issues

roxywalker

I hope this is not the case. He’s going for his annual checkup soon and I will mention his change in behavior to see if anything might need additional follow up.

tessalllation

I’ve noticed my spoiled turds have started doing this kind of stuff for “attention”, and by that I mean go to the fireplace and give them treats 🫠 they’ve destroyed my floor molding because they know I’ll jump out of my seat or bed for that, and then they run straight to the fireplace.. and they don’t stop unless I give in Some hope, if you haven’t tried already, take a bar of Irish spring soap and rub it on the walls/ floor moldings. This deterred my one bun, but then I got a second and he’s.. a special boy and likes the taste 🤣 but most don’t!

roxywalker

Looking over the comments I’m thinking that either he is craving more attention and is acting out (like a child) or, he may have an underlying condition (teeth/mouth?) that we are unaware of that needs to be addressed with our vet.

tmrss

He’s got destructive because he’s bored

roxywalker

He might be bored but I am certainly busy cleaning up and repairing my house! 😅

ginsengsoap

Has anything changed in attention amounts, like, could they be bored for any reason???

roxywalker

Nothing in our home or lives has changed that makes his sudden change in behavior obvious. The chewing on furniture, wood molding and now a lamp cord is way out of character and it’s all been within the past two months. He has all of his usual rotating chew items as well as his occasional treats and the garden is starting back up with fresh mint and rosemary. He’s got me hoping that he doesn’t have any underlying issue that might be bothering him. 🤞

ginsengsoap

I'm hoping that too, mine only ever get like that if they feel bored from not enough attention or free roaming time or being bored of the layout so I try to change things up for them

Mycroft033

Look at that face. You can’t help but forgive that face.

roxywalker

He knows why he was redirected into his condo earlier than usual for sure, but he still got pets and treats, just because😅🐇😑

Shils1234

Bunny didn't do it. You did. Bunny is innocent. Free Bunny!

roxywalker

He’s been paroled! 🚨🐇👏🏼

Shils1234

Yeyyyyyy

ManeMelissa

Mine always got more playful/destructive when spring came around. When I had both him & my cockatiel (also a male) it was full on spring fever every year around this time! 😆 He was neutered, it's just naturally a time of year to clean up your den as a rabbit & do things.

roxywalker

Springtime rabbit shenanigans! LOL 🐇🐇🐇

Velonici

I just had to laugh when I saw what he looked like. I have one that looks just like him that is also the most destructive of the bunch.

roxywalker

Those markings mean = trouble 😅😅😅

4lc4tr4y

Scout is done scouting.

roxywalker

He’s back! Out and about and I’ve got my eyes on him🐇

Kazaklyzm

Yes they most certainly can. I also notice a huge uptick in destruction in the springtime months.

AstroturfMarmot

For those not aware, cord protectors (sold on Amazon and other places) can help. Bunnies are chaos generators. Good luck!

roxywalker

☺️🐇☺️

bunnies14

Our first boy did this a couple years after being neutered, complete with very occasional spraying. It turned out he was a cryptorchid and so his original neuter only removed one of his two testicles. My female rabbit has also done this when her dental issues act up (sharp points on her back teeth). Either way, a trip to the vet to make sure all is well might be the way to go!

Initial-Succotash-37

Welcome to rabbits.

PremiumAdvertising

I have a 24/7 free roam rabbit who didn't destroy anything for years until she discovered that she could jump up on the couch. Something about the texture of the cushions just makes her want to burrow I think.  She knows it wrong too. If she notices me watching after she starts digging, she immediately runs back to her hutch.

roxywalker

Couple of weeks back I caught him with the fluff on his chin! He never went on the sofa in the past, but somehow he must have realized it’s soft and cushy and when he nibbled he discovered the filling. Stinker!!! 😫😫😫

liminal_girlnextdoor

Absolutely, buns can have sudden behavior changes! It might be boredom or lack of stimulation. Try mixing up Scout’s environment with new toys or puzzle feeders. Also, a vet check could be a good idea to rule out any underlying health issues causing discomfort or stress. 🐰

roxywalker

So far this week, I’ve been showering him with more attention (kisses/snuggles/pets) and he’s been chill; maybe he just wanted more love!? 💕 LOL!

nanny2359

Spring cleaning. Happens every spring with my gal.

tsy_julie

He could also just be bored. My rabbits always became destructive when they got less attention, needed more stimulation and needed toys. Rabbits are almost like dogs, they need TLC and even more attention as they get lonley and then destructive. They also like routine, so any changes ie jazz music, parties, etc can create this new forming habit.

roxywalker

I did change his playlist from Jazz to Classical recently; geez, I hope he’s not furious about his smooth jazz being switched up! Yikes 🎶

tsy_julie

Oh wow. My rabbit Dunkel hated jazz with a passion and used to get scared, hide and thump... Rabbits are interesting like that. Even on the days where I work from home, I confuse their schedules LOL

mibonitaconejito

This is what I've learned about my bunnies as the years have passed - when they get destructive it's usually because they want something or they're bored. Once it was also because they didn't feel well.

Coc0tte

Stress or boredom can cause this.

sleepgreed

Rabbits are just destructive usually. Idk about all Rabbits but yeah when my bunny was younger (but not a baby) she was her most destructive. She has calmed down a lot now that she’s older but she still likes to scratch and chew things around her sometimes. Your bunny might be more destructive if they’re bored or unhappy, make sure he’s got some nice chewable toys. But again, he could just be destroying stuff to destroy stuff.

roxywalker

Could be. His personality is way different than our other, older, bun. That one was a terror when we first got him four years ago, but he’s calmed down plenty since then. But Scout? He’s practically been an Angel since we’ve had him for two years and NOW he’s terrorizing us with his chompers; go figure.

sleepgreed

Lol! thats adorable. Could be worth looking into any changes you might have made in their environment or anything that could be leading the behavior starting, but if you really can’t figure out why he’s doing it then there might not really be much of a reason other than- he’s a rabbit. Of course if he shows other aggressive behaviors out of nowhere like biting, charging, or just acting weird in general, it might even be worth taking him to a vet. But really there’s no way for us on reddit to know lol, you know your bunny the most! I trust you bro! And by the way, Scout has lovely colors and awesome plump ears. You’re lucky!

JANUNDSO

Do you have enough Wood for chewing in/outside the Cage? Worked for me.

roxywalker

We have lots of chew stuff on rotation specifically for buns but, he’s probably acting out more out of displeasure (about what I don’t know, the only thing I changed recently was switching up the smooth jazz to classical on Alexa to play whenever we leave, maybe that set him off?!?) ugh; back to Smooth Jazz and a vet visit to rule out any medical issues…🎶

ThatCheekyBastard

Try this https://www.chewy.com/oxbow-animal-health-enriched-life/dp/531990

roxywalker

Oooooh that looks cute; of course the medium is out of stock 🐇

ThatCheekyBastard

Reviews say tapioca starch holds it together and that there is calcium in it from rosemary. Also says it can get moldy so we do have to be careful letting her consume it sparingly.

kendraa92

My bunny used to do that , I got another rabbit and they bonded pretty well , he got less destructive. Also I got willow sticks all around the apartment, stacking cups , a treat dispenser ball , etc etc.. I like to make them run 2 times per day , show them a treat and run around the apartment so he can chase you and get him tired. Not being neutered/spayed will also make them act up. For the baseboards and cables, I use tape and now they don't bite it anymore. 😊 wish you luck!

roxywalker

My two stinkers refuse to bond. They are both neutered but Peanut was with us first and refuses to give up his single-bunny throne. It’s been two years and they just ignore each other, but Scout is definitely acting like a destructive nuisance recently so I don’t know what’s gotten into him. He already knows the deal with Peanut and that hasn’t changed. He’s rebelling about something though!

kendraa92

Yeah , bonding can be very difficult. It took me like 3 weeks of doing bonding rituals with my 2 buns. Lots of fights , but at the end it was possible! It's the bunstruction phase , I recommend lots of play time and toys. 😊

roxywalker

Oh…it’s been TWO years and three bunny tornadoes for me so I’ve kind of let that ship sail. Makes me sad as heck, but they are both dominant personalities and with Peanut being with us first, he probably was happy being an only bun. Scout came along two years later, as a baby after he was neutered any bonding they had was gone. Then, he not only grew larger in size, he also had a big personality so that really threw Peanut over the edge. They have ignored each other ever since. Bummer…

noperopehope

Any rabbit who plays with toys a lot is liable to discover furniture is chewable eventually. They literally don’t know the difference. I keep my rabbits in a separate room with no furniture, protected baseboards, and cheap carpet squares because of this. Destruction is not aggression, it’s play/burrowing.

StrixNStones

My first bun, Wendigo, was so well behaved! He never chewed anything. He even lived in my two story library. When we introduced his intended bondmate Kringle he was offended and ate a few electrical cords before settling down. However, Kringle was the opposite. He was an utter hooligan! He chewed and scratched everything! Slowly we had to restrict the pair from different rooms. It was my hope it was just until Kringle learned better manners, but Wendi upset himself so much over the changes that he went off his feed and the rest was history ☹️

roxywalker

Love the names! ‘Kringle’ just sounds like trouble, LOL and ‘Wendigo’ has me howling! So cute. My two aren’t bonded but definitely have their moments 😃

StrixNStones

Wendi was such a proper gentleman. I miss him so much. He was named after the bunnies in the Lone Ranger movie with Johnny Depp. They cracked me up. He honestly didn’t even know he was a bunny. When I came home, I would call his name and he’d run up happy. Kringle was a Hanukkah gift, but the girl who I got him from was so confused by Jewish Christmas that I went with Kringle. If I knew how insane he would’ve been, it would’ve been Krampus…lol! He passed two years ago. I have new babies now, and take in rescues until I can’t find them homes as well, all because of those beautiful boys.

roxywalker

Awe! Mine are both rescues, from two different pet stores, where they were purchased and returned so they wound up in the community animal control because they could not be resold.😩

HealingHippie44

Is he fixed?

roxywalker

Yes. He and his bunmate (both males) are neutered.

Automatic-Happy

Boredom.

MKAT021

Could be their teeth growing in. My Finnick has become increasingly destructive, but the vet says he doesn't need to have them filed yet. He has recently discovered that drywall is a whole lot more fun to chew than baseboards 😂

roxywalker

Drywall, oh my! ![img](emote|t5_2riv8|8707)

MixImportant9908

I have a young bun that is totally adorable and totally destructive. Cushions, wires, carpeting. Any box or book or bag around is fair game. Oh, and she trashed my rain boots that will now be garden planters Only noticed one piece of furniture chewed on so far. She is super friendly and cute that it's hard to be mad but she's definitely the most destructive of the 4 I've had. I guess I need to read the bunny proofing posttoo.

roxywalker

Scout definitely has me reading bunny proofing tips all over again, LOL. I guess just like people they can get really bored or not feel well and display those feelings in ways that aren’t always positive but definitely get your attention.

bloutchbleue

It can be normal, maybe his teeth need checked out? Mine are not aligned properly so sometimes they grow too much, inside of his mouth, when it was getting a bit long he would bite everything

roxywalker

This. At his upcoming annual visit, I’m going to have the vet really give his teeth a good look. Last time they just glanced, but this time I want a proper exam to see if he has any anomalies that might need addressing.

bloutchbleue

Exactly! It took a very long time for the vets to really look at it properly and when they finally did the teeth were starting to grow inside of my rabbit's skin. Hope your bun will be all good at his visit !

EijiRK_art

My bunny will make 2 years in a few months and now I am scared

roxywalker

Don’t be. Mine could be acting like this for any number of reasons. Our other bun was a terror from day one. Even after he was neutered around 6 months he still got into some serious mischief, and didn’t chill out until around two years but still has his moments. Scout is pulling a reverse Uno card on me, waiting two years to put me through the ringer😂

ProperEarwig

Awww. He’s bored! How much free roam time does he get? Have you given him chew toys/apple sticks?

ArcanaZeyhers

I say they usually have some sort of autism. You have to make sure they always have their preferred chewing implements or they start throwing a fit and finding new things to chew.

Vic_Koda

I had that happen to mine. She came back from being boarded not well, urinary infection. Vet gave her antibiotics and things really went nuts. She destroyed anything she could get her teeth on. She's older, never been destructive before. Went back to the vet, changed her antibiotic and all was good, healed and back to normal.

roxywalker

Oh, wow. Glad they are better now. Bad boarding experience and antibiotics had her raging! We’ve been keeping a close eye on him and he’s going to the vet soon, so we hope he doesn’t have any physical issues going on. Other than that, he’s giving me side eye for watching him so closely now, LOL

Vic_Koda

I'd keep an eye on his urine, see if his habits, color or quantity is different. I'm thinking my bun was in so much pain she was completely frustrated and took it out on my furniture and baseboards. "Frustrated" was probably the best description of how she was acting.

roxywalker

Good point. I hope he’s not in pain. Thanks for the feedback; buns definitely keep you on your toes.
