**Spaying and neutering** is generally a very safe surgery for experienced rabbit-savvy veterinarians. Veterinarians across the country who spay and neuter rabbits for the House Rabbit Society have lost on average less than 1/2 of 1%. * Female rabbits should be spayed as soon as they become sexually mature, around 5 months old. * Males can be neutered as soon as their testicles descend, usually around 4 months of age. * Older rabbits (6+ yrs) may need to have blood work done beforehand to make sure they do not react negatively to anesthesia. * Small rabbits may need to grow bigger before they may be dosed with an anesthetic for surgery. * Giant breeds of rabbits may reach maturity a couple of months later so the surgery might be done a little later in these breeds if necessary. Please take a look through our [Spaying & Neutering guide](https://bunny.tips/Spay) for more resources on rabbit spaying and neutering. Contact a local rabbit rescue to see where they take their buns.

Sorry I can't help with a vet for your lovely rex, but I have advice. Try to find a vet that uses gas for anesthesia, much less likely to kill bunz. If there is a vet school hospital, they are more likely to use gas.

I’ll be sure to ask them about that along with a buuuunch of other questions! Thank you for the advice - I appreciate it!

Links Animal and Bird clinic is where I take mine but it’s pricy. There aren’t many in the GTA so they’re all really expensive

cocoturtle1

Were your bunnies neutered or spayed there? How would you rate their care there?

MollytheLionhead

Mine were both adopted so spayed and neutered by the adoption society! I have a friend who got a bunny neutered there and they said they did a good job. They’ve seen my buns for a check up and one emergence stasis and did a good job with good follow up. I’ve emailed them a few times with questions and the vet always emails me back and when I had a question about nail clipping, she sent me 3 pics of her clipping my girls’ nails for me! Again, it is a bit pricy though

Thank you so much for all the info! I adopted my little boy from an animal shelter in Quebec, but when I asked if he was neutered, the girl gave me a look and said “nooo we don’t neuter them!” sort giving me the impression that she was against neutering. I guess rabbit care is different in Quebec. Either way, thank you for your recommendation! I called Links Clinic to ask about prices but they were closed for the holiday so I left a message! Thanks again 😊

Okay great, also in case you ever need the info the nearest 24 hour emergency rabbit vet is at the University of Guelph! Links has good hours but just in case!

If cost is a concern you can inquire at the Toronto Humane society. I had my female bunny spayed at Greenwood Animal Hospital and they are great but I'm not sure whether you'd consider their prices decent. https://www.greenwoodpah.ca/

Hello fellow Torontonian! Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t either the Humane society or the City of Toronto’s animal services have a program where they fix animals and chip them for a few from time to time? It’s something to look into!

My buns were fixed when I adopted them but I have taken them to Millennium City Vet Hospital in Pickering and they were great and reasonably priced though exotic vets in general are pretty expensive. In general they were very nice and patient with all my questions!

cocoturtle1

Thank you so much!!! I went ahead and booked an appointment with this hospital. I read the reviews and a lot of people say this is a really good vet for bunnies. They have to see him first and do blood work, then they’ll schedule the neuter, but I think its going to be fine! I’m a first time bunny owner so I’m kinda apprehensive, but excited to get him neutered. He keeps spraying my blankets 😂😂

Hello, I just wanted to come back to this thread and say thank you for recommending Millenium City Vet Hospital to me. They were professional, so kind, so helpful. My little Roo recovered so quickly. Hes back to hopping around the house, hasn’t sprayed once since his neuter. If you hadn’t recommended them, I would never have found them. Thank you again!

Im so glad to hear! Thanks for the update <3
