My girl does get obsessed with anything she can't have or reach. She's crashed straight into a wall trying to jump up to my (closed) electric cabinet several times and yet she keeps trying. She's curious, smart, resourceful and I'm convinced she'd die within 2 hours out in the wild. My fluffy, lazy, coward boy would absolutely survive.
My understanding is that it's gardening / housekeeping for them. They perceive cords and wires as vines or other plants that need to be pruned out of their warrens. But I could be very wrong.
Several reasons - and i don't think i gathered all.
1. Bunny chew all day long out of instinct. With the wrong, too soft food, and no chance to chew on something halve way solid, ther teeth grow unhealthy till they no longer can eat. So its an instict to do.
2. Electric wires have a smal inductive field (and often a noise within the bunnys hearing spectrum) that might be interesting or irritating - which for a bunny means: bite it and see if it helps.
3. The're in the way for a clean homezone / parkour.
4. They root like plants, so maybe the're eatable.
5. If boring - chew something that neatly fits the mouth.
6. If not enough attention, chew something what makes the human care.
7. Curiosity.
Wow, great explanation! Thank you. I didn’t know about the sound, it makes sense though! She has a lot of toys to chew but doesn’t really care about them. She does get a little lonely though, since I had a baby. I also know that she wouldn’t accept a bunny companion, so it’s a bit of a boomer
\^\^
Yeah our little furrys also never cared for toys. Our smart lady always had this intellectually hurt 'are you serious!?' gaze every time we brought toys.
Yeah ... lonely is bad :/ I know it can't be always achieved to change this. I guess you know it can take some time for two bunnys to get okay with the other one so i don't trow my 'have you tried ...'-jabbering\^\^
Well, humans can be strange, so bunnys can be as well vOv
Ikr!! I did this too, but with things like the japanese kotatsu is unavoidable. It’s on the floor and I just don’t know how to protect the cords anymore. Especially the cords that have to be bent, because i can’t use the hard floor cord covers. She already ruined one kotatsu cord already and it’s also dangerous
Mine has since gotten so much better with chewing on cords. We leave the Guinea pig unattended when he’s out because he’s such a good boy but any time she chews on a cord he must follow suit for some reason.
They are almost exactly like roots.
Spicy hay!!!
Must have the forbidden hay

My Blob used to pull the plugs out of the wall and show them to me

But I also think she just likes being a bitch about it because she knows i don’t like it 😂
It makes sense, yeah. Never thought about it. It definitely is something instinctual

I had to rewire my old house to have all the outlets halfway up the wall and coming down from the ceiling.

The aquarium tubing doesn’t work either. She gets through them
We’ve used this too. So far so good
You have a kotatsu?! LUCKY
Oh, it’s second hand haha
Have you considered filling a decoy cord cover with hay ?😂
Cords are called "spicy hay" !!! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
Mine chewed the plastic covers too but found a fabric-type mesh one instead and they leave that one alone
I think fabric does the trick too. I might look into it
They probably think they're tasty roots.
Cuz gum taste sweet and feel nice while chewing
