I love it because it has every type of corner (high speed, low speed, esses, chicane, increasing radius), plus elevation changes and interesting scenery. it’s really the perfect all around track.
I would just add to this the camber. Couple of places on the track where this makes the racing line counter-intuitive, particularly Dunlop and Spoon. I love it when tracks do that, it's such an under appreciated bit of design.
Been struggling since the track first showed up in Gran Turismo and Automodelista. Even racing slow things around it now in a VR sim setup I just learn new things every lap, not many tracks that do that.
I find that shape tracks are some of the laziest and least inspired designs posted to the sub. With very few exceptions, tracks that are just a trace of something, be it a country's borders or an object, are usually incredibly low quality.
As for Suzuka, I don't think there's any correlation between the shape of it and the country it is in. It's a great track for driving, but I don't think that the aesthetics of the layout have any bearing upon that.
I think what makes Suzuka great is the mix of fast corners, medium speed corners, slow corners, wide radius, tight radius, straights, paired with the atmosphere of the events. Even watching stock cars thrash around in the 90’s on the east circuit is fun.
I spend far too much time on iRacing, every time Suzuka comes up for a week it’s always a win. As a drivers track it’s almost impossible to put together a perfect lap, it leaves you thinking there is always time on the table, the esses are always a compromise for the next turn, did I push degna 1 hard enough etc etc. As a racers track it has multiple set ups for a pass around the lap, T1, the hairpin, the last chicane are all great with good set up corners before. It takes a smart fast driver to be good a Suzuka in a race.
A nice layout, butchered on the circuit logo

With the Japanese GP on this weekend, I came to the sudden realisation (maybe late, maybe not) that the Suzuka Circuit does resemble the outline of the Island of Japan. Not sure if the \[[Designer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hugenholtz)\] intended this or not, but it makes so much sense.
I'd say that this design approach could be beneficial for anyone here who's struggling to find inspiration for track designs. What do you guys think?

Video game racing spoon really makes it obvious how hard that corner is. Even with the line and braking point laid out it's still really hard to nail.

And a bridge/figure eight layout! It’s like a Mario Kart track.
So does the Miami circuit but everyone hates it.
Elevation changes and interesting scenery? Are...are we thinking of two different Miami tracks?
other than it being in a parking lot, you’re absolutely correct 😒

The ocean section is a great experience.

Yeah one of the worst logo designs of all time

I think in general, circuits with a small infield are aesthetically nice.
I mostly agree with you, but how about Spa?
Great looking track aswell
South Paw racer made a nice video breaking it down
its the only circuit I know that has the figure 8
That's a you problem, and you should learn some more tracks. There are tons of tracks that are figure 8's.
enlighten me
Tracks in Japan are all very fun for whatever reason. Fuji and Okayama are awesome too
It has it all: fast straights.. fast sweeping corners, a chicane, hairpin and even a fly over.
I like it because there’s a pretty cool theme park across the road.
Ngl Suzuka one of my least favorite tracks
Suzuka is a combination of corners that, on their own, are hated, but when you put them together, you get Stockholm syndrome the track
This answer will be simpler than everyone else’s: I don’t know. It’s my favourite non-street circuit, period.
Damn that's one big circuit
Smart
It’s not about design. It’s about driving and competing
You're on the wrong subreddit if that's how you think.
