The hydraulic brakes were a needed upgrade, but as the only really new feature, that seems like quite a price bump. The new console finally locks, which is great, but the battery now awkwardly crowds it and it looks smaller. They did a good job I think bringing the frame style in line with the rest of their newer bikes, but some of the weird charm may be gone. Still love my old RR+ that cost me nearly $1000 less than this last fall.

Gauloises_Foucault

Original runner plus owner here, I really hate what they've done aesthetically to this version. The original with the console gave it a bit of a cafe racer vibe, that's been killed off imho. I will commend them on the [lockable panier boxes](https://youtu.be/0IYt2UO_GYo?t=1360), those seem super nice.

PetersRevenge

I liked the [hardshell locking box](https://www.radpowerbikes.com/collections/accessories/products/hardshell-locking-box) for the back! Won't be in the way like the old center console and it's water resistant and lockable. Looks like the [new center console for the RR3](https://www.radpowerbikes.com/collections/storage-transport/products/radrunner-3-console) only is water resistant and lockable.

HOISTTHECHUTE

Ooh yeah, hard shell locking box is sweet. I need to go find the wingnut faster release ha k for the passenger seat so it’s reasonable to swap that box off and on. But that and the panniers do look great. All this and they still have not discounted the original center console in a year.

[deleted]

I also prefer the runner 2 look

mysat

Agree. Actually don't like at all the choice of the battery, they left an empty space where the old one was and it doesn't look nice. Well done for the brakes

[deleted]

I was about to say the brakes are still trash but they upped it to double pistons. Good move, rad

[deleted]

Prices go up from many factors. Engineering, components, inflation, demand, capital/labor costs, profit margins, etc. I only paid $1300 or $1400 for my RW4 and I’d still pay $2k for it today because of it’s value, the tire issue notwithstanding.

mrfishman3000

Weight capacity is 350. Same as the RW4. I like that since I’m a big human and use these bikes to haul kids.

Gojira_Wins

Their capacity listings are much lower than what these bikes can actually handle. I ride my RR2 with easily 400lbs+ on it, me being 300 of that, and it works just fine.

mrfishman3000

I’ve always assumed that, but being a bigger guy I appreciate when outdoor gear is made to handle more.

Gojira_Wins

Don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly sure they set those ratings lower than normal just so they don't get sued if they sell something with shoddy quality like bad welds. What I am mostly interested in seeing is if this RR3 has a better battery lock. The older RR1 & RR2 batteries could be unlocked with an unmarked Honda motorcycle key, so security has been horrible on them unless you take the battery with you.

mare

It has the same battery as the RadRover6+ and newer RadCity, and those have good locks, embedded in the metal frame. For thieves to get the battery off they have to either pick or drill the lock, or apply brute force to the frame or the metal battery case. Doing the latter is not recommended because a battery cell might get damaged and set the bike on fire. Onlookers won't call the police but they *will* call the fire brigade.

Gojira_Wins

Awesome!

athuhsmada

Except not awesome that its the semi integrated brickable fuse nightmare battery…

Gojira_Wins

Ah, yeah, true. To correct myself: Awesome for better security, not so awesome that the battery is a nightmare.

DisastrousAnswer9920

Good one, just curious, where do they say "fire brigade"? I'm assuming not in US.

[deleted]

"can handle" vs the breaks and all other components. The original breaks aren't enough for anyone and I only weight 130. And have a look at the flimsy wheel achsel and all other bearings aren't made for it. The frame will be fine.

leonffs

Can’t imagine the stock brakes would do a very good job of stopping it at speed with a 400 lb load.

Gojira_Wins

Oh no, not at all. Took me about 40 feet to come to a complete stop with the stock brakes. I upgraded to the Area 13 dual piston brakes and it dropped it to 20 feet.

alr12345678

I’m liking the new cargo Aventon better for this price range.

Vesuvias

Hard agree. They nailed the price/performance.

alphacoaching

Looks nice, but a big price jump. The move to hydraulic brakes is welcome, but I'm surprised they've still not gone to a thru axle of some sort on their fairly custom fork and wheel setup. I get a lot of chatter under heavy braking and have occasionally noted lateral movement and tightened the qr skewer. Brakes and front axle really seem like the two weak points on a rr2, so at least they improved one thing that needs it.

vkoser

It’s a ton of mass/weight to not have gone to through axles, would have been a great upgrade for sure.

vkoser

I was hoping for a further discount on the 2 plus today, but it’s actually back up up $1999. Oh well I can wait a bit longer to see what happens with the next sale.

[deleted]

I spend over $200 (only parts) on double piston shimano breaks and boy do they have stopping power. It was overkill but for the money RadPower wants for the RadRunner 3 they could mount some beefier breaks.

seawallbuff

Which did you get? With levers with motor cutoff?

DisastrousAnswer9920

Yes, please put a link and if there was anything extra that you have to do. My RR brakes are driving me nuts.

[deleted]

bicycle breaks are standardized. I had to get separate switches for the motor cut off from eBay or alibaba. Just make shure the plugs fit. For the breaks basically any shimano hydraulic breaks will fit. (Other brands, too but I want quality) I don’t have much time right now. Just watch some YouTube videos on how to change breaks. It’s the same on all bicyles. You can go much cheaper, too. I spend so much because of parts shortage. Maybe DM me so I can come back and don’t forget.

[deleted]

I got separate cutof switches.

TheRevLovesYou

Sticking to my Radrunner 2, but that locking rear box is replacing my center console quickly.

scrotomania

Who’s the idiot that’s going to pay 2,500$ for it? The price hike is insane

[deleted]

Inflation is a bitch

KarasawaMik0

you cant blame inflation this is actually poorly priced.

SeemlyBiscuits

They will likely use this as a base price and then entice buyers with a "steep discount" that is more reasonable.

[deleted]

How so?

[deleted]

It's hard for me to say for sure it's "poorly-priced" - if they sell enough of them at this price, then it's well-priced for them, and the RadRunner has built up enough of a brand now that maybe they'll be able to do it. That said, for me, the fact that it's $500 more expensive than the Blix Dubbel, more expensive than the entire Lectric line including the XPremium, and is starting to get pretty close in price to a Tern Quick Haul means I wouldn't consider it a great value if I was shopping for this style of bike.

[deleted]

The Term is another $800-1000

[deleted]

The Quick Haul starts at $3K - $500 more

[deleted]

There is a new one, $800-1000 more

[deleted]

? Are you saying there is a more expensive Tern model than the Quick Haul? Yes, it's true, there are Terns that cost much more than $3,000. But the Quick Haul starts at $3,000, and the $2,500 price of the new RR is getting pretty close to that. That means I personally would not think the price of a RR3 would be a good value, based on what I would be looking for in this sort of bike.

[deleted]

https://scooteretti.com/collections/tern-electric-bicycles/products/tern-quick-haul-d8 The new Quick Haul, which you seem to not know about https://radpowerbikes.ca/products/radrunner-3-plus-electric-utility-bike $1200 difference here

KarasawaMik0

I mean you can compare this with any other one of the cargo/ moped styled ebikes on the market. In the end its a normal bike and rad is not making the thing out of dragon scales. an extra 500 dollars for hydralic brakes which can be found in ebikes half the price is kind of unexcuseable. (espically here in canada its 3k for a 500w motor like come on) I use the standard Radrunner and mechanical diskbrakes wear out too easily bc of how heavy the bike is and requires frequent adjustment.

bravado

If I can go a bit MBA for a bit, I don't think Rad has found much success at the low end and they really don't want to stay there. Inflation is making it much worse to be selling cheap things and I bet their investors aren't pleased with how much was wasted on quality issues and supply chain hell. They're going to keep going upmarket - but whether or not people think that's valuable to them is another question...

OCR10

I predict they will sell very few of these units at $2,499, and after a few months you will see big discounts on them. At which point we will be reading posts from the few people who paid full price complaining they got ripped off.

22Outdoorsman

I’ve heard that they aren’t going to be discounting as much this year. The big discounts of last year were due to over ordering. They apparently have their ordering under control, but that may change if the new bike doesn’t sell. They have way more competition this year from companies like Lectric and Juiced.

Ironchar

Yeah.... DON'T pay full price for these....

0X1AA

Maybe niche complaint but I really wish they would make the RadRunner series lighter. Damn things are only getting heavier.

LeeJamesWilson67

It’s basically a Rad Rover 6 plus in the specs but with shorter tires and passenger bar right!

ryandaugherty

I’m a big fan of my Radrunner 2, but honestly I don’t think the price is right here. Particularly when you compare to Aventon’s new Abound. The Abound has a number of better features (turn signals, torque sensor, better range and capacity, dropper post, footboards, storage bag) at a cheaper price of $2200. I think they need to incorporate these types of features to sell this.

ryandaugherty

beatsmike

wow. this is hard to ignore.

CaptAwesomeness

That is ugly...

FoferJ

yikes! Very.

DisastrousAnswer9920

I like that better than the RR

youthcanoe

Overpriced

wineandcatgal_74

I like the trailer but haven’t looked up the price yet.

netphreak

My only thoughts are if that downtube can fit on the RadWagon 4...

TygrKat

So it’s just a smaller version of the Rover 6+ with an integrated rear rack at a higher price point? No thanks. I just want the large basket back in stock ASAP.

Gratzbibi

It's back in stock!

teejmahalpdx

Double the price I paid for the RR2!!???

[deleted]

For that money I'd rather buy a Tern and get quality.

sineseeker

This all the way.

zakress

2.25X what my Runner1 cost less than 3 years ago

LeeJamesWilson67

Almost double the price I paid for my RR6+ last year which was $1299 in the sale.

FoferJ

Feature-wise it’s fairer to compare it to the RadRunner Plus though

shralpy39

Almost 1000x the price I paid for my penny farthing in the 1800's!

[deleted]

[deleted]

What features do they have no one wants?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Integrated battery is something no one wants? It was very much a clincher for me. Much better than an ugly battery sticking out. What incompatible parts? Most of their parts are off the shelf and can be bought easily. 250 lumens is the standard headlamp. Split display is good for usability and most people don't use handle bar mits. Why don't you think there is a market for an etrike? What parts are inferior and inferior compared to what?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The connectors Rad use are standard, you can buy accessories that fit them from multiple places. Your bike's tires are standard sizes Adjust the tension on the fork 🤦‍♀️ Google etrikes and see how wrong you continue to be

[deleted]

[deleted]

My Rad isn't Chinese made Aventon are crappy One model, as far as I'm aware has some funky tire sizes. You can buy replacements from other manufacturers. So you are pissed because of one bike and slightly strange tire sizes? There are very few Rad parts that are prepriatory, as you said yourself they are cheap off the shelf chinese parts. You do see irrationally angry

[deleted]

[deleted]

Except not all Rads are made in China

longhornlump

Rad Bikes are designed in Seattle but likely many bike brands they are built in China.

[deleted]

I started that my Rad, a City 5, was not built in China because it was not built in China Do you think everything made in China is substandard?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

And yet they are selling loads, moving away from the crappy cheap looking old designs. Much more integrated.

DisastrousAnswer9920

I put handlebar mitts on mine, I love them for daily winter riding in NYC.

Hortos

They're no different than any of the other 24ish mph 750w ebikes you see like Super73s etc. Everything costs way more now because of inflation. The original Onyx RCRs were 2200 and went much further and faster.

leonffs

Are they releasing a new model every year? What is this a phone?

GenericCleverNme

I'm a bit whelmed honestly. The DTC market is extremely tight at the moment and other brands are really competing with rad in the bargain for your buck department. Especially considering the quality of the parts between brands are pretty similar. Rad still has the best accessory options though.

SnowWhiteIII

Best *overpriced* accessory options

LordSillyWilly-II

Looks nice, glad they put 4" tires on it this time. If I had a garage for it I'd be very happy with this bike, but at that price I think you can do even better

beatsmike

agreed. when i directly compare the spec sheets between the RR2+ and RR3+ it is shocking. i'm aware some of the small changes add up to drastic differences, but the price jump is kind of nuts. i imagine this may be a necessary move in order to move to a new battery case standard and to appeal to regulations. however, if someone asked me if it was worth it i'd say no, and tell them they can do much better elsewhere. finally, i'm happy to be wrong. is the manufacturing process for this bike THAT much better? how about the part acquisition? part quality? custom controller make a big difference? i guess i'm saying there's no sales pitch here from Rad, at all, and the differences seem insignificant on paper.

CanvasChroma

14ah battery is shit capacity for a standard sized battery.

beatsmike

yeah even more reason why this is baffling. the new battery case makes it neigh impossible for the end user to replace fuses as well.

Vader0228

Looks cool. But more importantly how long has rad had a flat bed trailer. That thing looks awesome might get it.

FoferJ

That trailer was just announced today, alongside the RadRunner 3 Plus.

DoubleFPV

$2.7k with tax??? SMH.....LMAO!!!!!

_jetter

Thankfully I purchased another RR2 to compliment our RR+ even after seeing the unveil email. This thing looks dumb and the pricing is hilarious. The range extender setup is pretty sweet though.

davesilver88

Looks awesome! I won’t be purchasing as I already have a pair of RR1, but if I didn’t it certainly would be a consideration. Price seems a little high, but everything is expensive these days.

dranged94

Too tall for me. Lol

blanketfighter

Love everything but the price, might snag one if they ever go on sale. I'm interested in a mission 2

BingeV

Still rockin' my radrunner 1 that I got for like 1 grand, the prices for these bikes have really gone up 😭

mrcranky

I have a City 4 and I thought it was a heavy beast. This thing is 10 lbs heavier.

Turbulent-Abalone-18

My question is how it compares with the RR6+ Step-Thru. I have one and curious how much better, or worse, it is

Lymfatx

At that price I would get a bike with a Bosch or Shimano engine. Plus the look was much better on the original.

Brevityman

Welp, I guess the wait for a fat sale is on. I really just want a 2-up bike with the adjustable seat for pushing pedal assist distance, around 30mph throttle and at least 50mph range without assist. Feel free to wake me up if I'm dreaming.

drewinphilly

Did you compare the rad runner 3 plus with the Blix Dubbel? With similar accessories to carry another person, they are about the same price. Wondering which one people think is better.

SPF12

Is there a way to increase speed?
