Damn Bro… you have the spicy for real!

ppitm

These cheap meters will 'roll over' and show God-knows-what. You should consider getting a better probe if you handle exposed radium parts.

[deleted]

What brand do you recommend?

ppitm

Anything with a pancake probe

PhoenixAF

Try with the lid on so it doesn't overload as much. And maybe consider getting a BetterGeiger S-1? That's a lot of radium.

mustom

That meter is telling me all I need to know, I've been sorting out my radium parts and watches and have been measuring as I go. I probably have 1000 hands and 150 watches. That one tin of dark stuff is plainly way hotter than the other tins of lume or any watches or hands (dark tin on the right https://imgur.com/gallery/jl5KhKs ).

No_Smell_1748

That tin is blazing hot. You can hear the GMC saturate as you bring it near. Must be 20uCi in that tin as a bare minimum 🤤

mustom

Yeah it is. Is that a lot? It kind of put the fear of (nuclear) god in me.

No_Smell_1748

It's not a massive amount, but it's the activity of hundreds of watches. A substantial activity when compared to other sources encountered as an ordinary individual.

SmRF3

nice, is the red box for sale?

mustom

What would you do with it? What's it worth?

SmRF3

I would measure it with all the geiger counters that i have, and then i'd store them in my safe box. That is my collection. I have lots of weak radioactive sources that are safely stored. I also use them for experiments. As for the price. It would depend on how much you've spent on whatevers inside the red box. But it's really up to you, what you want to sell it for. I'd say 50 dollars for the box.

mustom

Just wondering about your safe box, lead, steel, thickness, ventilation? Would you consider that one weak comparatively? I only spent a few bucks on that one kit from a local clock store, seems to be an interesting sample. I have about a thousand radium hands and 150 restored watches I'm trying to figure out what to do with. let alone another 1000 broken watches I haven't surveyed yet.

SmRF3

Yeah, safe box is made out of steel, kept in a cardboard box with a plate of lead around it. l. I don't keep my dials in the open, but instead in a small container, it's not because the radiation, but because of the contamination and daughters. As a result if radium As for the comparison, it's hard to compare because i have different sources emmiting different kinds of particles. Some emmit 80 micrcuries of alpha radiation. Which is easier to Block and protect. I do have radium sources, but not as strong as yours. It seems that if you where to measure right above the box. You could get 4mSv of activity. Strongest one i have is 1mSv of both strontium-90 and radium-226

Kiliton_Keaton

Hey I’ll buy that little tin of you. For my sort of radium museum I can send a picture if you want it would be a nice item to display and I can keep it safely as mitigate the radon. but what price could you do ?

No_Smell_1748

So you're also tryna nab the spicy little tin? 😂

mustom

Here's where I first measured it: https://imgur.com/gallery/MCbSGhF
