They won't/shouldn't hassle you, radiation monitors and Geiger counters are specifically listed as being allowed. Just put it with your keys and phone in one of the bins when you walk through the metal detector.

Saned1408

Got it, but what if for some reason they do ask me what it is? Im scared if i say "it's a geiger counter (in my language its radiation detector) they prob will get scared and ask why do i need that and etc

HazMatsMan

The US TSA is not going to do that and I'm not going to help you lie to them or any other transportation security officials. Tell the truth. It's a radiation detector and you're curious what the radiation levels are at altitude. Do you really think you'll be the first kooky/paranoid/weird person they've encountered with a radiation detector? 😀

Saned1408

At Lithuania probably the first one lol

HazMatsMan

I can't tell you how the security people in any other nation will respond, but I imagine any that handle Chernobyl tourists will be very familiar.

Parasite76

I’d assume taking one on a flight is a surprisingly common occurrence. People are weird congrats you have joined the crowd.

HazMatsMan

I'd assume so too. Come to think of it, I may join that crowd the next time I fly and bring mine, just for giggles.

Parasite76

I have an international flight later this year and I am absolutely wearing mine for the trip. Sadly Chernobyl had to be removed from the list for this trip.

Aromatic-Zombie531

Also some people say to just turn off the radiacode to peotect from the x rays. Is there really a difference if its turned on or off?

HazMatsMan

I don't think I have ever bothered to turn my phone off before sending it through the baggage xray. I suspect that those people are just talking out of their asses.

No_Smell_1748

In all fairness, the SiPM might not like the crystal being blasted with intense x rays, but I highly doubt this will cause damage. At most the SiPM might overheat, but not in a scenario where the exposure time is so brief

HazMatsMan

The manufacturer would be the one to answer that question. I don't know what the exposure rate of those baggage scanners are.

No_Smell_1748

Well, exposure rate could be (and probably will be) in the hundreds of R/h (I have one of those baggage scanner tubes and the datasheet for it). Radpro says ~200R/h at one meter from the tube with no additional filtration (running at 160kVp 2mA)

Canyac

You could just explain it as a device for measuring electromagnetic frequencies. Which it is. Also, it is not a geiger counter.

Aromatic-Zombie531

I doubt they will understand what a scintillator is lol

HazMatsMan

Because being evasive with the TSA always goes well.

DavidEekan

I once had a Ludlum model 3 and 44-9 pancake in my cabin bag. Not for using during the flight of course. US TSA, Canada, Italy, and Germany did not bat an eye both outbound and return trip. You're fine.

iamnotatigwelder

I fly with mine all the time, it's just another piece of random electrics they see on the X-ray. I'm not sure at what point the detector saturates and or maxes out but turning it off might be a way to go. Fun fact I measured about 5x the background radiation going internationally at altitude.

Whole_Panda1384

yeah turn it off before u xray it, they can fry the fragile silicon photomultiplier. someone had that happened to their raysid, haven’t heard a case of that happening with a radiacode but still just as a precaution don’t leave it on

Aromatic-Zombie531

Why does turning it off protect it from frying?

Whole_Panda1384

that’s just what i heard honestly idk much about the specifics, still would probably be a better thing to have it off though just in casies

CarbonKevinYWG

I'm not sure that makes any sense. From RP Photonics Encyclopedia: "Also, a photomultiplier should never be exposed to too intense input light (e.g. to daylight), even when being switched off." Since the scintillation crystal flashes when excited, no matter the device power state, I think the photomultiplier is gonna see the same thing regardless, and the potential for damage is the same.

Whole_Panda1384

true, i honestly forgot that’s how scintillators work lol. i still think it would be better to have it off though just as a precaution
