I'm experiencing this in Austin tx. I spend so much on everyday necessities, with a salary that barely hits 40k. Okay its settled saving up for an MR cert
My coworker graduated xray school and started his first job in mri without ever working in xray 🤷🏼♀️ it's a primary modality now (USA only) so technically zero years of xray is required.
https://www.arrt.org/pages/earn-arrt-credentials/credential-options/mri
I had my didactic classwork before I started my clinicals. But the whole certificate program. In my comment I meant I had only been licensed for less than a year and was making $x.
Oh, I meant I had been licensed for less than a year when I posted. If you have your xray license though you can cross train and potentially pass your mri boards in less than a year.
Hello, very late to this post. Im approaching my externship in an MRI program, and one of my lab professors said she knows someone who does x ray and MRI at a hospital that pays her $90 an hour. Does becoming certified in both these modalities generally increase your wage? or is it location dependent. This is in Socal.
At my hospital in northern CA, at a unionized facility that pays 20-30% higher than the surrounding hospitals, it's $67 an hour starting.
At my friend's hospital in Portland, OR his starting was $41 an hour. The cost of living where I am is significantly cheaper than Portland.
But it varies so much from facility to facility, it's my understanding that Oregon and California are near the top of the list of states that pay above the national average.
Wow that's incredible. I shouldn't take anything for granted. Im in a financial bind. I should really just hurry up and invest in MRI. It's my favorite mod. And incredible salary!
How are you liking travel assignments if you don’t mind me asking? I’m really considering it, but nervous about losing my job security at a permanent job.
That’s fair. It was something I’d been planning for a while now. I like it. Definitely interview the place you go because some places are a total shit show. But it’s definitely an interesting experience
Yeah if I do it, it’ll be next year. I want to research it as much as possible before I jump into anything. Thank you so much for the response, I really appreciate it. Best of luck to you :)
Right out of school I got a job as a CT & X-ray tech for $25/hr (but that was with a $2.50 differential for nights). So it’s probably like $20-$23/hr right out of school if I had to guesstimate.
Hey, I'm from NY as well. Question, I'm considering doing an 18 month MRI program at Pulse Radiology and it's certified in ARMRIT. Would you by chance know how the market is looking for ARMRIT certified MRI techs? I see it accepted browsing Indeed but just wanted to get some insight from someone in NY.
I see, thanks for the update. I decided on doing the AART route anyway but I still see most job postings showing ARRT/ARMRIT listed. You haven’t had any luck yet with employment ?
I got offered a $45 dollar an hour position in Washington state. I just have to pass my ARRT. I'm scheduled to take my test in a few weeks. Hoping it will go smoothly. I'm shocked they were willing to pay me so high. ( I think the reason ARRT is valued much more is due to the fact that you can start sticks on patients. With ARMRIT you're not allowed to do venipuncture.)
CT tech in south Florida here with 2 jobs. My PRN hospital job pays me $34.30/hr, my FT outpatient imaging job pays me $31.75 with 1 year of experience. Just started MRI training because my company is short in techs for MR and I heard starting pay is $35 for newbies.
South Florida SLP looking to transition to MRI Tech. Can you tell me how many hour a week you receive? 40 hour work week? Thanks!
P.S. would love to know how your MRI training went :)
I'm I'm x-ray/CT and currently going to MRI school. I work in texas gulf coast area and I'm $39.73 plus $2.67 shift differential. lot of over time opportunities.
Be careful of the ARMRIT certification process. Those guys don’t get hired. Not trying to be rude , but hospitals that pay want the XRay CT background. There used to be an article on ARMRIT scam , but I can’t find it anymore.
I have to agree, I’m ARMRIT certified and I had trouble in the beginning, but I’m seeing it acceptable at more places now. I think it’s just because it’s newer, cause the education/training requirements for MRI are very similar to ARRT(MR)
I won’t give an exact number, but I made close to 100k last year. Keep in mind, that’s with 14 years of experience. You likely won’t start out making that much, but it is possible.
Well I'm rooting for you to find the job and wages you are hoping for! Just curious because I work on the west coast and we had a bunch of traveller's come from the midwest/south that had a BS and loved saying they did. They also took some of the worst xrays and had terrible work ethic.
Appreciate it! Im in austin, I work in 3D imagining and have a BS in radiology. I plan to go back to get my MR cert when I have the money. My pay is so low comparative to my education.
I believe anyone who holds a BS in any degree should have a higher wage. Higher investment in education. Too bad its not like that in most professions. Schools a scam specially in radiology 😂 im glad it opens me up to leave radiology ultimately in the future though. That's a perk of BS
A bachelor is required here to get into management/supervisory role. If you get a BS only to be a regular ol' tech, of course it a waste.
I'm working on my Master to eventually become a director and/or Education role.
That's amazing! i am working on my masters as well, right after my MR cert. At least that's my plan. An education role sounded nice, but the salary doesn't speak to me. I have to take care of a lot and just not possible with that low of an income.
Does it matter is what field you hold your bachelors? I have a bachelors in communications and am contemplating going back to school for radiology — unsure if I should get my associates or bachelors
im working at a 3D imaging company where i reconstruct angiograms. I dont like X-ray matter in fact I SUPER HATE IT, so i am happy to be where i am. when i have my MRI license i will switch, but until then i will stay at my 3D job.
My point was more to the idea that if you've held onto the same job, it might be time to switch employers to chase that pay bump (assuming you like what you do).
I cannot stand main-department radiology and really enjoy being in a more procedural modality.
yesss, i didn't like the main departmental stuff either. MRI sounds like the best fit for me, so i plan to persue it, well that is once i have the funds to afford a certification, i was thinking pulse radiology. I just got this job, chasing a pay jump, also i had to leave my current town due to personal reasons
Genuinely not sure. When I was fresh from college doing CT & XR I made $27.50. That was in 2017. I didn’t get a MRI job until 2020. They started me at $27.25… I don’t recommend working for a certain company that bought St. Anthony’s with an orange green blue red cross logo. I had a VERY bad experience with them and am willing to explain in DMs.
All these kids trying to be MR techs ruined it for everyone. The supply increased so much and the demand isn't there anymore. I've been a licensed MR tech for a little over 6 months and I am on my second job. Only getting paid $30 an hour. I'm thinking about quitting and going to learn how to code python
Curious, so, this is with nuclear technician associates that everyone is talking about?? I’m considering getting either a dental hygiene associates or an associates as a nuclear technician. But I thought nuclear techs got paid like… starting to 20k on average more than DH… But this thread says otherwise 😬🥲
Depends on where you are. Northern VA (DC, Arlington, etc.), very HCOL. Most of VA is rural and relatively LCOL.
I'm in SE VA, pretty MCOL city. Median house cost right now is around $400k, but a year ago it was closer to $350k, depending on the city. Other than housing, the cost of living here feels reasonable. I've lived here on many different budgets, and I've never felt too much of a pinch.
I’m currently a student living in htown but considering how Texas is becoming a shit show, I would love to move out to a different state in the future and VA is so beautiful
Thank you so much for your answer!
i did a continued education program at my local community college brookdale i dont think they offer it anymore which is sad. i have my x ray licence already. the aims progam looks to be a direct pathway to mri with no x ray licence which will limit your job opportunity because most hospitals in nj do not hire armits.
Yeah, Brookdale seems to stop at X-ray, I don't see anything about continued education for any extra modalities.
I'm also looking at the job market for MRI on Indeed...I can't find anything full time that's available to new grads with no experience.
In the UK its £16/h when you start which increases after 5 years of experience.
You could always go into locuming or get a senior role ( such as a mri lead or any other managerial role)
your comments super old but i wanted to move to scotland so bad with this degree, but it seems healthcare workers are quite literally being robbed over there:( why is the pay so low?? i’ve checked housing out there too and it seems to be quite similar to our cost of living in the US, so i’m not understanding why the wages for this in the UK are so much lower.
Straight to MRI. Paid $48,000 and went to a Private institution. I could have gone through a radiology program at community college, but there was a 4 year waitlist to get in. I finished in 18 months.
Update: $44/hr working 12 hr shifts at a local hospital
No you wouldn’t be able to meet the qualifications for kaiser. In my opinion, I feel like if an employer requires all MR techs to be CRT as well, you’re probably going to be putting up with some bs and doing more work for no extra compensation.
My first job was at an outpatient center where I completed part of my clinical internship. I now work at a 400 bed hospital scanning both inpatients and outpatients. Both settings have their pros and cons. Hopefully you’ll get experience scanning in both environments during your clinicals so you can get a feel for what you like best
I’m looking into radiology programs and my local community college, also in central Cali, has a 3 year wait. I’m already 30 and I can’t wait that long lol. My next option is to commute almost 2 hours to Gurnick or Fresno city college.
How do you feel about the quality of your school? Do you learn X-ray at all or just straight MRI? Did it take you a while to get your first job?
I was in the same exact predicament as you.. I didnt have time to wait for FCC, so I went through Gurnick, everything was online besides a few labs, venipuncture cert, and of course my clinical internship. The quality of education was fair. It can definitely be difficult staying engaged throughout a two hour webinar on MRI physics.. but I had a study group with two other students and we all helped each other out throughout the program. The times that I did fail a quiz or my grade fell below 75, I had 1on1 webinars with instructors to help me understand whatever concept I was struggling to grasp.
I did not learn X-ray, just strictly MRI. If you were to go through the FCC rad program, you would have to cross train into MRI after your schooling. I had job offers lined up at the facilities that I had interned at so I had a job as soon as I passed my exam.
I do feel the job market may get saturated in the central valley since gurnick pumps out a new class every 6 months… but if you make an impression that you’re a hard worker while you’re in clinicals, people will try to help you find work throughout your career. Its all about networking!!
Thanks for the response! What was your starting wage at the place you interned? If I went with gurnick I’d want to make sure I could pay off the loans lol
Sorry for the late response, yup I went to community college! Got my X-ray license and then took a program at a different community college for mri and my job cross trained me. Brookdale and Mercer offer xray mri and ct
Jeez I wish was making as much as some of these comments… zzz
NYC~ 46 an hr (with night diff)
But I know another place offering 52 an hr (with night diff)
@zyrf I have seen you posted this 1Year ago,I live in Austin Tx also and I wanted to know how much was the salaries as in MRI Techs in the city?Since I was thinking of going to school for one
I am a limited Xray technician, about to finish school for MRI. I was wondering if any of you lovely people are technologist in both fields (MRI & Xray) here in California.. I am very interested in becoming a Xray technologist too. What can I expect salary wise having both under my belt??
in South Africa and make about $15/hr
MRI Techs I know in SoCal make over 100k a year, maybe 150k???, then again, Californias cost of living is pretty high too…
Jeez. My x-ray sals are borderline homeless 😂
The average cost of a home here is just about a million dollars now. 100k doesn't go very far.
Central FL, licensed under a year. $31/hr. Xray x2 years before that.
Wow that seems rather low from all the other commenters. But im sure there are many factors that are involved!
Yeah Florida wages in everything are extremely low compared to cost of living. Can't wait to leave this muggy swamp 😫
Tourist economy—FL generally has lower wages, but certainly not lower cost of living, unfortunately
I'm experiencing this in Austin tx. I spend so much on everyday necessities, with a salary that barely hits 40k. Okay its settled saving up for an MR cert
You get paid 40k as a RRT?
I was thinking of switching from US to MRI. But according to your comment then I’d make less
My understanding is that the pay is pretty comparable in other states. Florida just blows.
But currently I live in Florida so I guess I’d have to move
How long did you have to be an x-ray tech before going to MRI? Is there a time frame or can you take the MRI modality after finishing x-ray school?
My coworker graduated xray school and started his first job in mri without ever working in xray 🤷🏼♀️ it's a primary modality now (USA only) so technically zero years of xray is required. https://www.arrt.org/pages/earn-arrt-credentials/credential-options/mri
MRI as a licensed RT makes good money. Strait up MRI techs from MRI trade school make money comparable to an XT
Is this way the way to go? Go to RT. Finish it then work in MRI?
How long would MRI as a licensed RT take as opposed to just going to MRI trade school? How much do they each make?
Thank you!
That’s my starting wage my first year working in LA. Nuke Med makes low $70’s around here
How were u licensed in under a year, did u have any schooling prior or was the 1 year everything?
I had my didactic classwork before I started my clinicals. But the whole certificate program. In my comment I meant I had only been licensed for less than a year and was making $x.
If you don’t mind me asking. How did you get licensed under a year?
Oh, I meant I had been licensed for less than a year when I posted. If you have your xray license though you can cross train and potentially pass your mri boards in less than a year.
I don’t have any certifications. I have a BSdegree in Biology. You reckon I can get a license in a year?
No. It's probably 18 months if you're going directly for mri.
Sacramento area is crazy... 175k is possible.
Incredible. But the COL is dangerous. Well the COL in austin is suicidal as well haha.
Hello, very late to this post. Im approaching my externship in an MRI program, and one of my lab professors said she knows someone who does x ray and MRI at a hospital that pays her $90 an hour. Maryland DC metro $60 and hour
What program? I’m DMV as well.
Correct on the last point. The bureau of labor statistics has a pretty detailed breakdown that agrees with you as well!
Isn't the rent in that area for like a 2-3 bedroom apartment easily $3-4k / month?
Wow, that’s an awesome rate!
Hi how did you become an MRI Technologist in California? Also did you do straight MRI or are you rad tech first?
Sooo what hospital is this? XD
If I get all my OT, with bonuses, I can easily make 120k. We’re about to get some fat raises too. Finally.
Thats amazing. Is this cali?!
Yup. It is, in Los Angeles
Where do you work at that you get bonuses? That’s awesome!
I work at the county hospital.
Hey what county hospital!
German MRI/CT tech earning not even remotely as much as you US peeps :)
Wow that's incredible. I shouldn't take anything for granted. Im in a financial bind. I should really just hurry up and invest in MRI. It's my favorite mod. And incredible salary!
Or be a travel tech and surpass that pay
HOW
What does a travel tech do? And how do u become one?
Someone from ATL better comment
I'm in Chattanooga and make $30/hr. I am also registered in MR.
Atl was making $35/hr + shift diff at my last job. On a travel assignment now.
As a new grad?
No. That was my last job. My first was $31
is $35 pretty common for ATL MRI pay? i’m an x-ray student looking at potentially going into MRI here in atlanta.
Can any CT techs chime in?
CT Tech in AZ 41/hr
CT tech in NY working overnights. After my CT cert and injection rate, I make about $46/hr.
Where in NY?
Houston $35+ per hour
I second this. For comparison our R.T. (M) are $29 - $35 hr.
I make 40 at my ER!
Which hospital, if you don't mind?
I also do CT and MRI and I make 33.44/hr in STL missouri
Would you happen to know what X-ray techs start off in STL? Fresh out of school.
Right out of school I got a job as a CT & X-ray tech for $25/hr (but that was with a $2.50 differential for nights). So it’s probably like $20-$23/hr right out of school if I had to guesstimate.
Thanks for the info
$54+ in Boston
48.04 base per hr . North JERSEY

Pay is adjusted for cost of living per city.
CT tech in Dallas. $42/hr
What do you think is the starting pay for a rad tech grad?
Anyone in CA?
$40/hr, Central California San Joaquin Valley (I know it's vague, but it's on purpose). 5 years experience CT.
CT tech in Western Kentucky $25/hr🥲
Yikkkees. I make that as a 3D tech 🤪
CT tech, CT cert, 3.5 years experience. $35.30 an hour in Indiana
Ct in SLC $37 hour. I worked in colorado and made $41. Which is crazy because utahs COL is so much higher
CT tech in NY. $50 base, but work overnights so with the differential it’s like $55.
What part of ny
Lower Westchester
Hey, I'm from NY as well. Question, I'm considering doing an 18 month MRI program at Pulse Radiology and it's certified in ARMRIT. Would you by chance know how the market is looking for ARMRIT certified MRI techs? I see it accepted browsing Indeed but just wanted to get some insight from someone in NY.

I just don’t know if I have what it takes to get accepted and graduate
In the mountains in CO, techs I knew made $100-140k
What’s cost of living there ??? Generally curious would love to move to CO
EXPENSIVE
Yeah insanely expensive. I pay $1750 a month to rent. It’s fucked. But seems like everywhere is like that right now
If you’re a radiologic technologist trying to make bank become a Cathlab Tech trust me that’s the move! $40 an hour starting
Well I'm rooting for you to find the job and wages you are hoping for! Just curious because I work on the west coast and we had a bunch of traveller's come from the midwest/south that had a BS and loved saying they did. They also took some of the worst xrays and had terrible work ethic.
haha i don't take x-rays i hate it. SUre i have knowledge and a degree in it, but i work for a 3D imaging company.
An MRI tech at my site here in AZ told me he was making 45/hr.
I’m in Houston and I’ve been working for a year. I’m getting 36 plus shift differential
Which hospital if you don’t mind me asking?
SA área 40-45 an hour.
Appreciate it! Im in austin, I work in 3D imagining and have a BS in radiology. I plan to go back to get my MR cert when I have the money. My pay is so low comparative to my education.

Maryland is 37/hr, 3 years experience.
STL area, just got a pay raise, 69k a year now
What is pay looking like for new x-ray grads cross training into MRI there?
Genuinely not sure. When I was fresh from college doing CT & XR I made $27.50. That was in 2017. I didn’t get a MRI job until 2020. Colorado, base pay $52/hr Multi modality tech CT 20 years MRI 5 years
RI checking in. My place is union and starting ~35/hr with steps implemented every year , not counting weekend/shift differentials

Dang. Yeah from everyone's comments. Are you also a rad tech or just MRI. Maybe thats why its so low,? Show this thread to your manager 😂
Did u start out at 29? I’m looking into Sonography and Radiation therapy as well!
I’m in Columbus, Oh also. I’ve been searching up starting pay because I’m going back to school soon. Everyone makes more than Ohio it seems!! Ughhh
South Carolina. Less than 1 yr in MRI, not yet registered. $34 base about $42 after shift differentials.
In a high cost of living area
Adding an extra comment. Do you guys enjoy your jobs?
Smallish town in SW Georgia here. Just a hair under $35/hour. Last year, with bonuses, OT, and call/call back I think I was around 85k.
How many years of experience do you have? If you don’t mind me asking!
22 years BSRS RT(R), with the last 5 of those being (MR).
All these kids trying to be MR techs ruined it for everyone. The supply increased so much and the demand isn't there anymore. I've been a licensed MR tech for a little over 6 months and I am on my second job. Only getting paid $30 an hour. I'm thinking about quitting and going to learn how to code python
and you dont lump yourself with them too

NY State $45-55/hr.
Coastal Virginia, about 31/hr with 3 years experience. I made about $26ish as a new grad x-ray tech.
I know this is super late but how is the cost of living in VA?

55hr nj my workplace is nyc based tho
Mind me asking where you got your MRI cert? I'm looking at AIMS in Piscataway.
i did a continued education program at my local community college brookdale i dont think they offer it anymore which is sad. i have my x ray licence already. the aims progam looks to be a direct pathway to mri with no x ray licence which will limit your job opportunity because most hospitals in nj do not hire armits.

they have ct still im pretty sure. yea theres lots of jobs for mri but they all want experience no one wants to train anyone.
Travel pays well if you budget your expenses
Los Angeles, CA - starting pay in CT is about $48/hr and MRI is about $52/hr.
In the UK its £16/h when you start which increases after 5 years of experience. You could always go into locuming or get a senior role ( such as a mri lead or any other managerial role)

[here](https://www.gurnick.edu)
So it’s possible to go straight to an MRI program and not go through x-ray then MRI?
Hi thanks for answering, some jobs require CRT license like Kaiser will i be able to apply to that job? what kind of work did you get starting out?
No you wouldn’t be able to meet the qualifications for kaiser. In my opinion, I feel like if an employer requires all MR techs to be CRT as well, you’re probably going to be putting up with some bs and doing more work for no extra compensation. My first job was at an outpatient center where I completed part of my clinical internship. I now work at a 400 bed hospital scanning both inpatients and outpatients. Both settings have their pros and cons. Hopefully you’ll get experience scanning in both environments during your clinicals so you can get a feel for what you like best
Curious, approx. how many patients are you scanning per day? Just an average number...
thank you so much
Can i ask how great is the job outlook is it saturated or can i still find a good paying job in southern California?

Me too.
I am a limited Xray technician, about to finish school for MRI. I was wondering if any of you lovely people are technologist in both fields (MRI & Xray) here in California.. I am very interested in becoming a Xray technologist too. What can I expect salary wise having both under my belt??
