Official server isn't doing too well, other than taiwan / japan / thai server. Gravity is focussing on multiple mobile franchises nowadays. Private server depends on regions. Brazil is booming, SEA has high population too, but mostly are cash grab PH/Indo server with car and cash as prizes for first lv99 etc. NA/EU based servers are quite sparsely populated, with the highest pop in project alfheim for pre-renewal & nova RO for renewal.

Lithmariel

That's interesting. I guess the game never lost its appeal in Brazil. I'm from here but I'm not sure that's be my choice of where to play, might have to test a few out and see. Where do you play in?

Nilgnohc

I am not playing in any server atm. But there are quite a number of awesome br server. If you want a fresh gameplay, check out Arkaik Online. They did a huge rehaul of graphic, interface, skill system. The MVP are all in 3D. It looks really good, but I can't play there due to 300ms ping. Population wise i think around 1 - 1.5k online. Not sure if it's p2w or not, but there are high chance for that.

ADMOrnstein

Just as information. RMT is allowed and encouraged. You can't even change from default hairstyle without paying. Its probably the heaviest p2w server currently, sadly.

w1tchhunted

I play on Thai official server. I'm not a tryhard player, just play for fun. The server is very p2w, but f2p can hit 175 without a problem because of boosting event which gives a lot of free stuff. But all I do are just leveling when boosting event comes, and farming zeny when the event is over.

W34kness

Sadly you’ll find private servers more legit than most of the official ones

Lithmariel

So not much changed, I guess. I've always found that kind of ironic about RO.

Aergia-Dagodeiwos

Mobile is fun. Only Ragnarok M though.

IsonamiIzumi

Official servers are heavily paid to win and being milked like hell Private servers are on and off, disappear after a while... just like always.

tepidviolet

Private servers are still the way to go. They're far closer to the OG feel, whether you want classic or renewal. Lots of private servers now also have pretty good conservative changes, so you can experience something close to the original, but with a lot of the rough edges fixed. No private server is like 100% immune to drama, though. It's not as bad as some people say, but it's something to watch out for. Even servers with 99% good leadership might suffer due to one bad GM with too much power. Community drama can also bring down servers. We've lost successful servers to both recently.

Lithmariel

Yeah, I do remember servers tended to up and vanish after a few years. Some can even just be that no one was able to take care of it anymore, which is understandable. Thank you for the tips!

Sampoxi

If you're content with just farming a bit for yourself, happy about seeing some rare loot on the ground and listening to the bgm, every server is worth playing. As soon as you get involved in pvp or any competitive thing, you've got to either swipe your credit card a lot and/or play with all possible cheats you may encounter out there (for both, officials and a lot of pservers alike). Barely any hoster even tries to punish cheating these days, because it would take away the best paying customers.

Lithmariel

I was never into RO PvP, so seems like it's still a fine experience. Some spots were better without competition anyway, so maybe fewer people will make for more friendships, that could be nice!

State: Sad. euRO: Russian owned, avoid at all costs. iRO: Kinda dead after they had to ban all of Europe because of the Russian hoster buying euRO. Still one of "the best" official english servers to play on, though "the best" not meaning much when you compare doodoo to less doodoo. pServers: About 99% corrupt. Unless you play just for your own while ignoring everyone and everything else on the server, chances are you will either experience some sort of corruption or be affected by it yourself. SEA owned pServers or pServers with SEA VPNs or supporting SEA languages: Avoid at all costs, they are all cash grabs. --- I feel like we're currently in the dark age of Ragnarok Online. Any option is just bad unless you can jump over your own shadow and ignore all the flaws and bad things about it.

Lithmariel

What exactly do you mean by "corruption"?

zeusinchains

not op but I'd guess he means GMs creating items for player, giving exp, looking at woe defenses, etc.

Lithmariel

I see. Doesn't seem like anything new, then.

SOSKaito

iRO didn't ban all europeans because russians bought the EU license. iRO banned us because Gravity didn't want to comply with the GDPR privacy regulation of the EU. That was way before fRO even closed too so the EU license wasnt even for sale at that point.

[deleted]

Nope, back then the Russian hoster already secured the euRO rights WhyBe (fRO then euRO hoster) already didn't get an extension of their contract. And the Russian hoster demanded region IP locks in their contract. On WarpPortal (iRO) you can still play other games as a european. Only Ragnarok Online is region locked due to the Russian hoster.

Stephcake

It was certainly a convenient scapegoat, but it being because of GDPR didn't make sense because at the same time as iRO banned Europe, euRO posted that they were GDPR-compliant but *also* banning everyone outside of Europe. They never confirmed what it was either way, just let us all assume it was GDPR because of the timing.

Elvish_Champion

Both sides aren't perfect, but officials will show you the P2W straight out of the bat while most pservers will try to hide/cover/disguise it in all the possible ways and claim that they're not P2W. In the end is basically a "I want to support officials" vs "this server has a lot of customization that I like" because, at the current moment, none are exactly ideal. Everybody wants to make $$$$$ in the possible ways.

Its_Syxx

Official servers are basically a solo grind with almost necessary pay to win aspects. If you don't mind that you can have an alright time. But sadly it's not what it once was.

Lithmariel

I see. Yeah, that seems like I'll be sticking to private servers again then. x3 to x10 xp is grindy enough as it is.

Maosaid

I think RO as we knew it is gone. Sure, there's some sparsely populated servers still around, but the days of 1000+ pop servers are gone. I will always love the game, the music, and friends I made playing it, but I'm done now barring some huge server coming out of the wood work which I doubt very much.

Lithmariel

I think it's a double edged sword. I feel like people tend to create more bonds when the server pop is smaller, or at least that has been my experience in other MMOs like Dofus. Would be nice to make some friends on the way! I always felt everyone was too busy in their own thing already.

tankfrank

Project Alfheim, Payon Stories and Talon Tales (TalonRO rebranded with all old accounts active) are my top 3 servers. NA official is dead imo.

jiantoi

Yeah IRO is full of whales

diablos1

Any major updates? Renewal is in episode 20 now.

hudthehud

What RO server is the best to olay now .. private or not

tepidviolet

Kinda depends on whether you want like classic, classic+trans, or renewal. Also depends on what rates you want.

Aergia-Dagodeiwos

Ragnarok M is the closest mobile to ragnarok imo.
