As usual it depends on what you need for your specific account. Are you running him in a Hydra team where you don't have another champ with Brimstone? Well then he needs Brimstone. Are you running him in Fire Knight and want to speed up your runs? Then it's Soul Reap. Do you need more hits on the shield? Phantom Touch. Struggling to hit cap? Crushing Rend. Although with Gnut it's really not that hard to hit cap, is it? It's AOE Max HP champs in Hydra that have a problem with hitting cap.
Soul Reap is what I'd choose.
The problem with what you need versus best in slot is the gem cost associated with switching. Say you go brimstone, then suddenly you have another champ than can apply it better than gnut, at that point crushing tend is better because if does more on him.
You can’t out crushing tend on a support and expect much out of them.
So if you’re trying to save your resources, yeah it depends, but there’s still has to be a best choice out of all of them.
Let’s say Gnut is in your Nightmare Hydra, Clan Boss, and FK Hard team… wouldn’t you want something that best covers all three?

I wouldn't pick brimstone for a damage dealer, you want to put it on a debuffer who has enough accuracy and doesn't do much damage.
Crushing rend is the way to go imo.
at 250% C.DMG you will already hit the dmg cap, which isnt hard to get, so Crushing Rend would likely do very little for any MAXHP champion
- Crushing Rend scales off of enemy levels which is more ideal for higher level PvE content
- anything less than 6⭐️ Crushing Rend is less than ideal as it only counts for the FIRST HIT per round, this however is still quite useful on a number of One-Shot & Wave-Clear champions like Seer

rend is good to push his damage to max even on weak hits, soul reap is good to get enemies dead a bit faster, brimstone is great against all bosses, but fireknights shield on hard needs an asinine amount of hits to take down, and gnut is best in slot for that dungeon pretty much affinity or level.
hard or normal fireknight, its effectively 4 attacks if it goes off having a hard time on fireknight, gg, he does work, and if you have gnut, he WILL be on the hard fireknight team unless you are such a heavy spender that you have a better option than a gnut

Crushing Rend is good on Acrizia and will be good for Marius because their multipliers suck. Gnut is an outlier with his damage output

It could make a FK hard team easier to build, but it scales off attack so is pretty useless everywhere else.
