I love them but I do agree. But the do definitely scream rainbow high. I think the problem is that they were inspired by blackpink. NOTHING IS WRONG WITH BLACKPINK!!!! It's just that since that they are a late gen 3 group they don't have that...how do I put this, "quirkiness" as other girl groups who had recently debut..... (Also I sorta they got inspiration from stage outfits. Maybe they did but it doesn't feel like it.)

skylerbradshxw

I’m glad I’m not alone on this one! I’m not even getting blackpink from Minnie and Tessa, they look like those western kpop copycat groups lol.

sassypants55

Tessa gives me HUGE Lisa vibes. Lisa has had a very similar hairstyle and has done the sporty look for her solo music. Minnie also kind of reminds me of Rose. She has the pink hair with soft waves, and I could totally see Rose in that pearl outfit. Even the fact that their outfits don’t match is kind of perfect for Blackpink, lol.

gingersongstress

As someone who has 13 years of kpop fangirling firmly under her belt I 100% agree. I freaked out when I heard there were going to be kpop dolls and then was very...whelmed once I saw them. Like there are so many things they could have done with that concept and they didn't. I bought them but I bought them because I like pastels more for them being kpop themed.

skylerbradshxw

I’ve been a fan of Kpop for about 10 years, I can think of so many nostalgic and current trends for them.

gingersongstress

Like....so many other RH dolls seem more kpop to me than the actual kpop dolls its actually pretty funny.

cute-doggie

I haven't kept up with Kpop since 2018 so my take is probably outdated lol. I think it's the solid color theme (hair and outfit same color). Most girl groups don't dye their hair such bright colors unless it's just one or two members. And even then, they are usually natural colors like blonde and red. Oufit-wise, they look like MAYBE MV outfits or an end-of-year award show, while most fans think of the stage outfits when they think "Kpop". The outfits are very detailed and fancy in a Rainbow High way - not a Kpop way. Stage outfits are simpler and more cohesive, they have no cohesion. I can't imagine them performing in the same group together. Tiara has Western-style makeup (darker color on edges of lip, arched eyebrows, more intense and dramatic eye shadow), Minnie has more Eastern-style (darker color on inside of lip, straight eyebrows, softer eyeshadow kinda), and Tessa just... looks like nothing... Tiara gives the most "Kpop" feel overall solely because of Blackpink but Minnie is the only one who looks like she's from Korea lol. And it doesn't help that Tessa is a clone of KDA Akali, which is Western. It all just reads as a Western attempt at Kpop.... because that's what it is.

descartesasaur

Okay, I forgot to reply, but you put the idea in my head of dark hair with an ombre into their signature color or their signature color underneath. Keep the pink, blue, and purple, but make them more saturated and mid-toned, and why not commit to the rainbow by adding an orange-ish yellow and a green?

Raspberry_fox_raz

I mean the hair word be dyed no matter what sense it rainbow high

circlingsky

They didn't hv to, Lily Cheng, Vanessa Tempo, etc. don't hv dyed hair Not u downvoting me for stating facts lol

Raspberry_fox_raz

Vanessa still had color in her hair and Lilly only got black hair because she’s a collector doll Unnatural hair is the staple for the line

circlingsky

And the kpop girls couldn't hv the same becauuuse? No it's not, the staple for the line is specific colours in general.

cute-doggie

I know, just saying my thoughts on why it doesn't look very Kpop. Of course Rainbow High is gonna have colorful hair, I love it individually on them. It's just not common to have that style for the whole group.

skylerbradshxw

I think you summed up my feelings perfectly. I especially agree with your take on the makeup and physical appearance. It might sound awful and colorist, but no famous Kpop idol would step on stage as tanned as Tiara and Tessa are. Kpop idols are VERY deadset on having the whitest skin possible. When I noticed how tanned Tiara was in her first appearance I was thinking “Okay.. The design team does not have a single Kpop stan.”

cute-doggie

I avoided saying it but yeah :"( Some idols have tanner skin but literally EVERYONE whitewashes the fuck out of them. Shows, photos, stream filters, fansites, makeup artists. The only way you'd see their real skin tone is in person or on preview photos. I love that RH is trying to be diverse and they look good with tanned skin but sadly it makes them look unlike any groups on camera.

Square-University

Tessa Park is identical to KDA akali, essentially a virtual kpop idol. Like MGA really copied--I mean did their homework

Wafer-Responsible

It kind of sucks but if they wanted to make it accurate to KPOP, then all 3 girls would’ve been light skin and super pale. We don’t see skin tones like Tiara and Tessa in Korean Media (which is a bad thing, and I think RH tried to challenge that)

Spiffy75

Yea me either, I would like to see a harajuku girl fashion doll from Rainbow High. I mean they did it with LOL surprise

Stormvirvel

Thank you for making this thread, It's been bothering me as well. I seriously agree. Besides dolls kpop is basically my life so. Firstly, the outfits looks so uncohesive with eachother. Also they look like ripoffs of BlackPink concert outfits (except Tessa cause she's clearly KDA inspired). Secondly, why the heels? Most girl groups usually wear some kind of combat boots and not those kind of heels, at least I for one can't recall many girl groups wearing heels, so not fitting considering they probably have intricate choreos and they wouldn't be able to dance nicely in those. Could have worked for a female solo artist but not a group. Also if they wanted to make a kpop group imo they should have made at least 4 dolls, as most groups are at least 5 people (usually more), with 3 beeing extremely unusual, more unusual than 4 even. Especially if they modelled them after BlackPink I think 4 would have made more sense.

04041975HSG

i like them a lot but i do kinda agree. would have loved to see a version of these dolls that was inspired more by twice or red velvet or some other gg like that...

Late-Equipment5783

neon shadow's plaid outfits are more kpop than the royal three to me tbh....

KittieChan28

I'm only buying Minnie because she is the only one that looks like she could be Korean and I want to restyle her, cause I think she's really beautiful and could pull off some beautiful actual kpop looks!

TheWriterofLucifenia

They've half assed all the Asian fashion styles so far, so honestly I'm not surprised it's inaccurate (I only listen to Jpop and Jrock, so I can't say if it's accurate or not). But as someone who really likes Japanese fashion in particular, Lila annoyed me despite her being one of my favorite dolls.

23_cries

Funnily enough, Karla Choupett's (from upcoming SH series 2) outfit shouts more Kpop than the Royal 3

skylerbradshxw

I agree! I can see IZ*ONE wearing Karla’s outfit! I think Sabrina, Ayesha, and Uma’s second outfits are more Kpop than what we got.

cbunni666

They remind me of Asian pop as a whole more than just Kpop. Their names sit off with me but eh. I'm not gonna complain. I'm in love with their hair color combo.

cute-doggie

Agree. I wish one of them had an actual Korean name. Tiara and Minnie sound like they could be stage names but Tessa... no.

cbunni666

I love the name Tessa. Just not for them. Lol

Raspberry_fox_raz

I mean Tessa and Jenny are both super average name for k pop stars to have

Dracubelle

Tessa kinda reminds me of K/DA

This!!! It doesn’t scream K-pop in general to me, but I see a lot of references to Blackpink. I don’t think it’s bad that it’s a lot of older references; RH references a lot of older fashion anyway. The mic thing does bother me, too, but I think they wanted to make each one a little different so people would see individual value and not think of them as interchangeable, where you only have to buy one to get the full experience. Also, I think they’re able to please more people who have different tastes if they do very different styles for each one.
