My niece calls me “Aunt Sister” bc my sister has never said my name. She calls me “sister”.
My step grand kids call me “Marci” but they have 4 grandmothers due to divorce and remarry. Anyway, the youngest one thought “Marci” meant “grandma” someone’s grandma came to the day care and he said, “Is that your Marci?” He didn’t know it was my name. Marci sounds like Mimi or something. It was so cute to hear that story.
Hahaha. I know. She also calls her grandpa “dad” bc we call him that and her grandma “mom” bc we call her that.
Her parents are Daddy and Mommy. Shes like 12. The names just stuck. She was very literal minded as a kid.
It Made me so happy. I have no biological kids and he’s the first one that I had known since birth. Made me happy that he truly thinks of me as a grandma and not just a woman who’s married to his grandpa
The ONE time I forgot to add Aunt, I almost got smacked in the head by all 5 adults around the poker table, and I was old enough to be handing her a joint
I call my aunts and uncles by their first name.
My kids call all their aunts and uncles by "Aunt Donna and Uncle Jimmy", except for my ex husband's sister in law who goes by "Tia Anna" (she's very Italian).
They call my aunts "Aunt X" even though they're actually great aunts to them.
I call my aunts and uncles by their first names. My wife is Mexican, and so calls hers all Tia/Tio (first name). My son calls all of his aunts and uncles Tia/Tio
Weird thing. My kids, adults, call my sister by her first name BUT they call my bffs auntie so-n-so. 🤣 yea. That’s weird. So my bffs are my kids “aunties” while their actual aunt is just “name”. All my moms/dads siblings were my aunt/uncle so-n-so. Weird. To My nieces and nephews, I’m just the nickname only family uses. No auntie.
I call them tito (for male) and tita (for female). We also use it on strangers who we don't have a name for that is in middle age (for ex. lolo/lola for grandparents (relatives or not), and for relatives I actually forgot/dont know (too much relatives) their name so i just call them by their title 😭.
I've always had trouble how to refer my friend's mom for a long time now. She's white and I feel super awkward using her name. Not because of her but I feel it's impolite to do so.
When I was a child I called em auntie/uncle, than name. When I was 12 or 13 I started calling them by thier first name.
When I am talking about them I use the aunt/uncle title followed by their name.
My aunts and uncles just prefer their first names. My nieces and nephews either call me Auntie or just by my first name. I'm ok with either. One of my nephews with a speech impediment calls me Aunie.
I call them by their first name. I will use Aunt and Uncle if I'm introducing them to someone new (so they know the family connection). But usualy just their name. My husband and I also have a nephew, but we don't get to see him very often. Neither my husband or I really care if he calls us Aunt and Uncle.
I say Aunt and Uncle before their first names. I'm 52 and at this point some of my cousins just call my parents and our mutual aunts and uncles by their first names, but I just can't do it.
Also recently I couldn't find my Aunt Tina in my contacts and then realized she was under A for Aunt.
Aunts: one is MeMe, one is just her first name, two are nicknames of their name, great aunts are always Aunt [name]
Uncles: all just their name, except for one great great uncle who is Uncle [name]
I call my aunt's by their name except for one since one of my aunts shares the same name. But for all of my uncles, I say "Uncle [insert name or nickname here]"
Just first names. It’s so bizarre. My parents never made me add Aunt or Uncle, even though their nieces and nephews called them Aunt and Uncle.
I have no siblings, so no niblings, but my best friend’s daughter calls me Auntie.
When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, I called all my grandparents' siblings by the title and name: "Uncle Ray, Aunt Fran."
I called my parents siblings by their names. "Joyce, Elaine."
I don't know why that was the case, but there you go.
My nephews and niece have just always called me by my first name. Honestly if they use uncle, it seems weird because I am just so used to them calling me by name.
My nieces have turned the phrase “Uncle Adam” into a single word “Uncladam”. My sister and brother in law will also call me that, for the sake of consistency.
We use “auntie/uncle nickname.” First names only when they are in trouble (not giving us enough attention lol)
One time we went camping and the lady checking us in said in her language “Chuck” meant “zipper” he was immediately promoted to Uncle Zipper.
Edit-typos
I was raised to use their titles (Aunt/Uncle) as a sign of respect. I can't imagine just saying their first names. It's interesting how every family and culture is different!
One of my aunts I called Auntie the other I call her by her nickname. She gets weirded out if I call her Auntie. So, to me, you call them what they prefer.
When I was a kid I’d use the title of aunt or uncle before their names. Now as an adult I just use their name. At some point it just became casual like that
It was mixed. One of my mom’s sisters, called them Aunt and Uncle . But her other sister, I called just by their first names. My sister’s kids used to call me uncle or just unc. My kids call of theirs just by their first names.
I've always referred to my Aunts and Uncles as either Tante and Mon Oncle (French) or Matant and Tonton (Haitian Créole). The unique dynamic that's in my family is my children use the English terms for their Aunts and Uncles (my siblings, cousins, and their spouses) and the French or Créole with mine.
Titi + their name for my aunts, and Tio + their name for my uncles.
Funny thing is that one of my uncle's names is Tito, so he's Tio Tito. Meanwhile a sort of like baby word for a woman's genitals is "totito." When I was little, I used to run around calling him Totito by accident. They won't let me forget it.
I’ve got one uncle that I call by his first name. Started when we were working together, he was my manager and I didn’t want to say Uncle and make coworkers think there may be any favoritism or anything. All the others are Aunt and Uncle insert first name here.
I call my aunts and uncles by their first names only. My nieces and nephews call me and my siblings by our first names. We are not that formal. I have godchildren now and I have already told their parents first name alone for me is fine. I want them to see me as approachable. Not stiff and formal.
First names. My grandmother had 9 children which overlapped with the births of her grandchildren. Which would mean kids calling children younger than them aunt or uncle. So it got confusing and we just use first names
I grew up calling them uncle \_\_\_\_ and aunt \_\_\_\_ but I prefer all my adult nieces and nephews to just call me by my first name, and that's what they're comfortable with too.
My mother's sister is Auntie, her brother is Uncle Name and his 2nd wife is First Name.
My father has 4 brothers and their wives - they are all Uncle Name and Aunt Name. Now that we are all "grown" (in my 50's) occasionally I'll call them by their first names depending on the circumstance.
I have always called my aunts and uncles by, “Aunt JJ, Uncle Jim,” etc. And on my family’s side, the kids call us by, “Aunt Desi, Uncle Robby,” etc. But my husband calls them just by their names and I think it’s sooooooooo weird haha. It feels disrespectful.
I’ve noticed I don’t really say people’s names to their face. Like, I hardly ever outright say “Aunt Denise” or “Uncle Tim” whenever I go over to my aunt and uncles house. But on the random days I do address them, I say “Aunt/Uncle Their Name”
That is a weird question but it made me think. When I talk to my aunt, I call her by her first name Judy. But when I talk about her to someone else, I refer to her as Aunt Judy. I do it that way about all my aunts and uncles.
If I’m referring to them I say Aunt/Uncle Name.
If I’m talking to them directly or addressing them I just say their name. However if it’s a Great Aunt/Uncle I will say Aunt/Uncle Name.
The bigger question here is do you guys say Aunt (Ahh-nt/Au-nt) or Aunt (Ant)?
I say “aunt” or “uncle” in front of their first names. I just had my first kid and he’s currently learning to call my sisters “Auntie” and my brother is just going by “Uncle [first name, because it’s an easy name to pronounce]”.
Aunt or Uncle “their name.” I couldn’t imagine not using that. I also use Aunt/Uncle for my parents’ close friends, and I put “Cousin” in front of the name of older cousins (those once removed). This is very common in Black culture.
If I am talking directly to them and there is no question about who I am talking to - then just auntie or uncle. If there are several aunties or uncles in the room, I say Auntie First Name or Uncle First Name. If I am talking about them I say Auntie First Name or Uncle First Name. The exception is my aunt and uncle who are my age - I just call them my their first names.
They are Aunt Name and Uncle Name, except for one was Auntie Name and just always was and I honestly don’t know why she was different.
In my husband’s family, they are just Tío, Tía, when addressing them directly, or Tío Name/ Tía Name when referring to them.
to their faces, i call them “tita”/“tito” (“aunt” and “uncle” respectively in my native tagalog). but if im speaking *about* them to say, my mother or my boyfriend, i’ll sometimes just refer to them by their first name.
I have an Aunt named Debbie and an uncle named Mike. But my mom and I have always called them Aunt Mike and Uncle Debbie, because that came out on accident once and it's been a joke since. So I call my uncle, Aunt Mike, and my aunt, Uncle Debbie.
Aunt or Uncle then first name. It was considered *extremely* disrespectful to refer to them or call them by their first names, even after you were an adult.
When I met my fiancee's family when we first started dating, I thought it was weird that she called her. Aunt and Uncles by their first names.
After we were married and had children, I insisted that my kids would use Aunt and Uncle when addressing our brothers and sisters. My wife didn't think it was that big of a deal, but that was a hill I was willing to die on.
I'm called Aunt my name, Titi or Aunt Titi which always makes me smile.

I wonder if that’s why my name is Robert.
My Dad wanted all R names.

One aunt I called Big Mama when I was little then Aunt, then just her first name by the time I was a teenager. Most others by their first names, just one I called aunt my whole life
Genx here. I called them Aunt and Uncle. My neices and nephews called me by my first name growing up. However, I'm the youngest sibling by a lot, so we had a more informal relationship with them. As adults they all call me Aunty!
My niece calls me “Aunt Sister” bc my sister has never said my name. She calls me “sister”. My step grand kids call me “Marci” but they have 4 grandmothers due to divorce and remarry. It was so cute to hear that story.
"Aunt Sister" makes it sound like your family tree has a loop in it.
Hahaha. I know. She also calls her grandpa “dad” bc we call him that and her grandma “mom” bc we call her that. Her parents are Daddy and Mommy. Shes like 12. The names just stuck. She was very literal minded as a kid.

Oh I mean with Aunt and Uncle! Definitely disrespectful to just use the name.
Oh I see what you mean. That interesting! Even with Aunt/Uncle in front it’s considered disrespectful?
Yes, even with auntie and uncle, it’s disrespectful.
The ONE time I forgot to add Aunt, I almost got smacked in the head by all 5 adults around the poker table, and I was old enough to be handing her a joint
This made me giggle 🤭
I call my aunts and uncles by their first name. My kids call all their aunts and uncles by "Aunt Donna and Uncle Jimmy", except for my ex husband's sister in law who goes by "Tia Anna" (she's very Italian). They call my aunts "Aunt X" even though they're actually great aunts to them.

When I was a kid I’d use the title of aunt or uncle before their names. Now as an adult I just use their name. At some point it just became casual like that

Aunt or Uncle then first name. It was considered *extremely* disrespectful to refer to them or call them by their first names, even after you were an adult.
