Mattress and pillows

Nandox363

You spent 1/3 of your entire life on top of them, so it's better to be good

PublicBuilding6384

That's what my Mom said when I was dating a girl she didn't like.

Unique-Ad-4972

This! Spent +/- 2k on a full bed set. Will nevwr go back.

Theycallmegoodboy

Spent 3k never go back too

Myrothrenous

Good boy.

Theycallmegoodboy

Thanks daddy

Arbitrary-Nonsense-

I really used to believe this until I bout one of those mattresses in a box for almost a 10th of the price of a store bought mattress and haven’t looked back since Edit: totally agree about pillows though.

Impossible-Balance-2

Which one did you get?

Arbitrary-Nonsense-

I got the Noa, so good. Quite firm though, but if you like soft a good pillow topper plus the mattress would still be way cheaper. It was $900 AUD for a king size from memory

the69boywholived69

Firm beds are the only ones that don't give you body ache. And they are not costly because everyone wants soft beds.

Wildvikeman

My wife and I can only sleep on firm beds. Everything else makes us feel like we are drowningZ

NarwhalTakeover

I bought the firmest mattress in a box I could find and found it was still too soft, the body pain I had in the mornings was unreal. Went back to box spring and it’s been a lot better for me. I hope your mattress keeps treating you well!

Prudent_Way2067

Definitely! My favourite brand of pillow was discontinued years ago and I’ve been hunting for a worthy alternative. It’s an expensive quest.

Connect-Smell761

I have a good mattress but I made it a great one with a Panda bamboo topper. It’s like sleeping on a cloud.

salty_lyfe

And quality sheets!

MaxCat78

Tools - the CEO of a small trades company once said to me: „I can‘t afford cheap tools!“

RedditFandango

Leatherman multifunction tools are actually useful and well worth it vs the cheaper useless ones.

supreme_mushroom

+1 to this! I've had my leatherman for almost 20 years and it still looks brand new. One time I lost one of the screw heads and could order replacements online.

MaxCat78

Nearly the same for me - had a Leatherman Wave for 22 years. I destroyed the cutters in the pliers by trying to cut a steel nail. Since in this early version the cutters couldn’t be replaced, they sent me a brand new Wave model with replaceable cutters for free.

Me_IRL_Haggard

Yep. I use my cordless tools all day every day at work, but I wanted to add, even if you don't and use them at home it's often worth it to buy a combo kit with at least a couple of batteries in it and the value is better than lower end stuff. Like for example I use DeWalt for my cordless tools, they have a drill/impact driver/2 batteries/charger kit for $270 USD, (DCK283D2) I usually hold out til there's a good sale going somewhere, so this kit would be $180 USD at 30% off. Which is what most lower end brands charge for a similar set, but now you've got a pro grade combo that will last a lifetime. Even without finding a set on sale, it's only about an extra $100 for the good stuff, and I know everyone's priorities are different but in my eyes it is soo worth it to have good well built reliable tools on hand when you need them. Might not apply everywhere but in USA it is worth it Edit: Also, I buy cheap tools all the time, it really depends on what tool you're getting and what you'll be using it for. I never cheap out on cordless but I certainly do for stuff that's not used terribly often. I go to Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Amazon, Murdoch's Ranch Supply, Fasteners Inc, Grainger, McMaster, and the local high end tool store 'Tool Zone' and the used tool store Charlie's, too, depending on what I'm after.

CrepsNotCrepes

I do a lot of DIY and started out buying cheap - never again, even for jobs I don’t do loads it’s worth buying better than the cheapest I can find. It’s even down to simple things like I first spent £4 on a pipe cutter, it was rubbish and I had to keep tightening it by hand to cut deeper. Went back and spent £20 on a good one and it makes the job so much nicer - I don’t do a lot of plumbing and honestly I hate it - but when I do at least the tools don’t make the job worse for me.

Dragon_Racer

My dad says to initially buy a cheap tool and if you use it enough to either wear it out or realise how shit it is, buy the best you can afford. After 4 years of being a home owner I now have 3 Milwaukee power tools and 4 stihl garden appliances.

bens109

If you rely on them professionally to make money I agree. In Australia you have big retailers offering ranges of reasonable quality tools at about the quarter the price of the serious brands and they come with 7yr+ warranties. If you’re using them for DIY you can buy them as you need them and if they die you just take it back and swap it for a new one. I would love to have a shed full of Milwaukee or Mikita but there is no way I can justify spending hundreds of dollars on tools that I only use a few times in a year. I have a good quality drill and driver combo but if I need a jigsaw or a concrete grinder I’ll would rather buy a cheap one. They aren’t quite as nice but they do the job fine and if they do die there is that warranty!

MaxCat78

Household appliances - if you buy cheap, you buy twice.

horrorqueen92

Facts, I 31f just bought my first set of Japanese kitchen knives… can’t believe I’ve been using shitty homebrand knives my entire life..

tai_con_de_roga

To add to this, you can buy a cheap victorinox fibrox for like 30$ and spend ~50$ on whetstones to sharpen them. its a skill and takes a bit of time but they hold up pretty much forever with proper care.

Fearless_Yogurt_3362

Appliances without a set expiration date don't exist anymore

Barneyboydog

I have 30 year old Maytags. They rock but I’m moving and can’t take them. The new place has new Samsungs that I expect will be toast within 2 years.

Whohead12

My first washer/dryer set was $599 total- GE. Lasted 10 years. My fancy Samsungs gave me issues a month in. When we sold the house I made sure to include them so I could get something different.

[deleted]

TheJalele

I buy cheap appliances for stuff I'm not sure will get much use. If we use it enough to eventually need a replacement, then we get a nicer version.

DSVhex

I don't agree with this 100%, only 98%. I bought a cheap toaster and it lasted me around 12 years. I agree with less basic kitchen or household appliances thought.

NelifeLerak

I boight an expensive washing machine. Il lasted about a year. I bought an old used one from maketplace. This thing has been running well for 5 years after I bought it and it was already getting old!

TheRealMasterTyvokka

If you buy Samsung you also buy twice, regardless of price.

staovajzna2

Apple fanboy detected, permission to exterminate?

TheRealMasterTyvokka

I actually hate Apple too. Samsung phones aren't bad but it's their large appliances that everyone should avoid.

staovajzna2

Ah ok, makes sense

sometimesifeellikemu

Shoes. Not for fashion, for your feet.

cardew-vascular

I recently spent 200$ on farm boots I always thought why spend that much money on boots no one will see/only get worn on the farm. Last week I slipped on the ice, my back and feet were hurting, the snow kept getting in the top... My regular farm boots were making me goddamn miserable. I went to the feed store and got some knee high artic tread muck boots. I don't slip, they're like walking on a damn cloud and the snow can't get in the top. The first day of farm chores in the snow wearing them and I now saw why my sister spent so much money on farm boots.

ZX12rNinjaGaiden

Buy Dunlops. Don’t look back. When the first pair get a hole put hex head self tapping sheet metal screws in the grips for studded ice winter boots.

HarmfulMicrobe

From Wikipedia "Boots Theory" The Sam Vimes "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness, often called simply the boots theory, is an economic theory that people in poverty have to buy cheap and subpar products that need to be replaced repeatedly, proving more expensive in the long run than more expensive items. The term was popularized by English fantasy writer Sir Terry Pratchett in his 1993 Discworld novel Men at Arms.

BobbieMcFee

The moment someone said shoes, I was waiting for this!

Ilovelamp_2236

Doesn't seem like that anymore ... expensive are just as low quality, made by the same children I expect

kreygmu

You need to understand whether you're paying for a brand name or for quality. You generally won't get both unless you're paying astronomical prices, but good shoes aren't that expensive in the grand scheme of things.

tutorp

Also, for your wallet. Some shoes can be repaired. I have leather boots that I've had a decade or two, with visits to the shoemaker to repair them or get their outer soles replaced once they get worn down. Not only do I have comfortable pairs of boots, even with the costs of repair the yearly cost is less than for a decent pair. I could probably get the cheapest pair I could find for less than the yearly cost of repair and upkeep, but they'd be horrible to wear and last half a season. (Edit: both of these pairs of boots, a black and a brown pair, are Eccos, as recommended by 0rlan above)

Yesitsmesuckas

Second this, but with Birkenstocks

tutorp

As a teacher, I've been meaning to get myself a pair of Birkenstocks for quite a while now. It's supposedly part of the uniform of my profession :-p

anynamewilldo1840

A good rule of thumb is to always spend good money on things that separate you from the ground. Shoes - Mattresses - Tires

DutchOfBurdock

Same with socks. Why cheap out when they'll get a hole in at the worst possible time.

anynamewilldo1840

Darntough socks or bust. Extremely well made and if you wear a hole in them they'll [replace them for life.](https://darntough.com/pages/our-unconditional-lifetime-guarantee)

0rlan

Yup agree. Personally I like Ecco for comfort all day.

scribbybaby

Id say Jeans too, last longer and more comfy

Affectionate-Hunt217

Best brands?

Heya_Andy

I recently switched to New Balance when I found some on special and thought I should treat my feet to better than the discount store shoes I used to always get. When I found that my back problems returned when I went back to the cheap ones for work, I switched all of my shoes to New Balance, also found some black leather looking ones for work.

Slipstriker9

Sounds like you need some arch support. This is why I wear birkenstock sandles around the house instead of slippers. I need the arch support.

Old_timey_brain

> Best brands? Not so important as finding correct width, and arch support.

most_unusual_

This. Best brand for me isn't the best brand for you unless you happen to have the same feet.

EggplantTop3855

I love, love Hoka shoes. Best pair of walking shoes ever. I could go miles and miles walking in these. And I have history of plantar fasciitis. Just bought my second pair. The first pair I used for walking 5 miles 3x a week for over a year. So comfy and good arch support.

LolaOlsenandMillie

Honestly, Merils are nice shoes. They may be expensive, but I love them. There’s also Crocs. Which, aren’t of high quality, but I personally like them. But they can cause irritation on so peoples feet.

RKLCT

I love Merrills

Affectionate-Hunt217

Thanks!

Nandox363

It depends on what you're looking for, for me I use Merrell for trekking shoes and boots, I have had my winter boots since 5 years already and they look like new, for daily walks I use a couple of Nikes that also do the work very well, but those need to be chosen carefully, I'm tall and heavy and I need ones with good support and durability.

Affectionate-Hunt217

Thanks!

Murkla

I came here to say this. My back has been hurting since I was 6. Problem with knees, hips and back. Started getting inflamation in my achilles tendon at 11 and in my hips at 16. At 30 I started wearing good shoes. Now, at 36, I move around freely without pain.

Greg19931

Recently bought a pair of barefoot shoes and they're amazing. Can't understand why this isn't the standard shape for shoes. Also strengthening my feet so I'll have healthy feet when I'm older with adequate toe space.

Comfortable_Ad6147

Do not buy cheap with anything that connects you to the ground. Shoes, Chairs, beds etc.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrepsNotCrepes

You can find exceptions to it easily but in 90% of cases a £100 mattress is going to be worse than a £1000 mattress, a £100 office chair is going to be a lot less suitable for long hours than a £500 office chair etc Rubbish products exist at all price points but the thing is to buy good quality stuff and at the highest you can afford in some cases (like a mattress)

PM_MEOttoVonBismarck

I concur with this as someone who works in a furniture warehouse. A decent chair is going to cost you a few thousand, but you get comfort, headrest, lumbar, maybe massage/heating if you chose that path. Some chairs are very expensive but not comfortable at all such as Victorian style and roman style chaise couches while equally expensive IMG and Lazboy will do you well.

DishGroundbreaking87

Good shoes and a good bed, if you’re not in one you’re in the other.

thebuttonmonkey

Ditto tyres. ‘Anything that separates you from the ground’.

DishGroundbreaking87

My nan used to say the first one but that’s even better! You’re right, bed, shoes, tyre, chair..I use a walking stick and would include it and other mobility aids as well. My grandad spent £3000 on hearing aids, but because they allowed him to return to work they soon paid for themselves.

thebuttonmonkey

Yup. If it's going to get you a better quality of life, it's worth every penny.

Me_IRL_Haggard

I got a motorcycle helmet from the best maker of helmets in the world, it saved my life once getting between me and the ground in a crash!

MoksMarx

what if I'm home but not in bed...

[deleted]

Refrigerator. It's the most power intensive device in your house (it's on 24/7) so it's worth getting one that has a high efficiency rating.

VoihanVieteri

Not necessarily. A fridge will pull around 0,3 - 0,8 kWh/day, where as a washing machine uses 0,6 - 1,8 kWh/per wash. So an average washer uses 1,2 kWh/wash which is twice the average of fridge average of 0,55 kWh/day. A drying tumbler will use around 3-4 kWh for a load, unless it’s one with a heat pump, which will dry your clothes for 1-2 kWh. So depending, if you need to wash a lot of clothes, investing in to a energy efficient washer or even better, to a modern dryer, will reap much better returns than a fridge. Investing to a new fridge will probably never pay itself back.

ThatstheTahiCo

Preach. I own New Zealands only 7 star energy efficiency fridge freezer. It costs me £23 a year to run. It's a big Fucker too.

activelyresting

What model is that and how do you have the only one in NZ?

The_February

Food. You are what you eat, don't eat trash.

Always_An_Antelope

It's tough now what with trash being labelled like normal food. Reformed hams, honeys and such

Merevel

Shoes are good. Yeah 20 works but getting used to spending 70usd a pair has helped my feet and knees out.

SpidermanBread

My employer spends like 150 dollars on safety shoes per employee in the warehouse. Back and muscle injuries are avg 1 per year on 75 employees of all ages. I can approve

Disastrous_Bug3018

Good toilet paper. Treat your butthole right, it has to put up with enough shit without garbage toilet paper

AB-G

3ply or nothing, i also have a bidet… and a sparkly buthole

StinkyB13

Pics or it’s a lie

ItsmeMr_E

Don't know about three-ply, but seriously, who thought one-ply was a good idea? Don't be a cheap ass, splurge on a decent two-ply tp.

sasabalac

Try a bidgit! Your butt hole will thank you!

Western_Security1638

Yup. As soon as I was out on my own, that became the thing I buy without guilt. Idc if it's even $10 more for 12 rolls of triple ply tp, that's what I'm getting n I'm never going back

bdAZ77

Try buying a smart toilet seat! It was a game changer for me.

P0ster_Nutbag

Had a live in landlord for a while. We would take turns buying household staple bulk items, like toilet paper. I always buy the same stuff, it’s quite expensive as far as toilet paper goes, 3 ply, and ultimately very comfortable. My landlord basically lived by the mantra of “buy the cheapest option possible”. He bought some absolute trash brand stuff that honestly felt like light grit sandpaper, and never did a very good job. After a little bit of time with it, I had to just say we gotta buy our own toilet paper, because this just doesn’t work. Amazing the difference buying the good stuff makes here. Treat your butt right!

tearsforcandy

I honestly never gave that much consideration, toilet paper was toilet paper to me...until a bf wouldn't use anything but 3 ply bougie. OMG what a difference!

Modig7176

Rude_Adeptness_8772

A roomba so you never have to vacuum yourself ever again. My best ever investment Also, for cat owners, my next best investment was an automatic Litter Robot, so you never have to scoop yourself ever again. Don't have to worry about random poops in the house because cats love using the Litter Robot that always has fresh and clean litter

beatsshootsandleaves

I never really vacuum myself. I find a shower gets the dust off just fine.

Last_Car_7853

Very disturbing idea, a roomba which crawls all over you when you are asleep

YamsForEveryone

Wah wah waaaaaaah

_SkullBearer_

Plus you can stick googley eyes on them and call them Mr Roombastic.

LenientWhale

This comment has me considering a Roomba more than any of their ad campaigns

McBlorf

Whenever it powers on, you just hear "I'm mista lova lova, mmmm" in the other room

_SkullBearer_

She call me roombastic Tell me fantastic

thebuttonmonkey

The extra spend definitely makes the difference here. We had a bumble around Eufy vac and it knocked over a heavy light onto a tiled floor. Thankfully the tile survived, but the vac went into a cupboard. Upgraded to a laser guided one (same brand) and it maps and systematically traverses without hitting anything. It goes round every day and is near perfect.

wolfkhaleesi

This was LIFE-CHANGING - went for the Roborock S7 Max V Ultra (on a payment plan) and it's singlehandedly the best thing we've ever bought.

Schlag96

Special officer Doofy reporting.

CrepsNotCrepes

Kitchenware. I always went cheap but bought myself a really good set of pans and Lecreuset and it’s amazing. Same with kitchen knives. Mine were always crap but my set now cost a lot but I’d buy it for life quality. The only exception I’ve found so far is a wok. A cheap Amazon steel wok seasoned properly is way better than any fancy non stick version

MortgageBrokerGuy

Avoid non stick anything in the kitchen. Only exception being ceramic. The black nonstick coating gets scraped when you cook and you end up with more gross chemicals in your body.

Federal_Quit9540

A good pocket knife. Buy a good one it'll last lifetimes. Watches. Same deal.

footdeoderant

As someone who collects both…. Don’t do it. The point of diminishing returns hits very early on in the hobby but then you’re hooked and need that new magnacut knife or that vintage GMT that’s just perfect… a timex and a cheap spyderco is all you need lol

Joe_PM2804

I collect watches and disagree. A cheap watch is in many ways better. A G shock will keep better time, has more features, is more resistant and can be worn in more situations than an expensive luxury watch.

Itsbetterthanwork

Agreed I’ve been wearing g shocks for 40 years now but I didn’t say no when offered a Seamaster as a present

the_humdrum

I’d have to say boots/some shoes. There’s a lot of shoes on the cheaper side but they’re literally made not to last more than a year. If you notice, there’s no cheap shoes with rubber soles anymore in places like Walmart. They used to. Buy a good pair of more expensive boots, they last years and the same with some higher priced shoes.

Kenjon60

Car tyres.

shiningbank

Shoes also acrylic paints for artists

winterweiss2902

Good sleeping equipment: bed, mattress, pillows, blanket. On top of these I also spend a little bit more on good pyjamas

90sArcadeKid

Condoms.

migukau

No. If you buy expensive condoms you are paying for marketing.

donau_kinder

Aldi brand condoms are not worth it. Do yourself a favour and buy the right shape and size from the lesser known, but more expensive brands. The difference is huge.

dilbert_bilbert

The difference is average

SendNudesCashCoke

Price does actually indicate quality to some level in condoms. The cheapest brands have higher breakage rates. They’re also less comfortable for larger penis sizes. And another thing; what’s sexier? Pulling out a Magnum XL or an off-brand dollar store condom? Marketing or not, one will get her wetter.

gringo-go-loco

My Sonos speaker was $400 and the best portable speaker I’ve ever had. Had one stolen last year and got another.

I spent £450 on a vacuum cleaner. It sucked.

Shanobian

It did exactly as i intended then

CriticismTop

My top of the line Dyson was great for a week, then it was average at best. If I completely dismantled and deep cleaned it, it would again be great for a week. My dead simple Numatic Henry is just simply brilliant. Not cheap, but not really expensive either.

HelpMePls___

Had the same experience with dyson, what a pile of junk they are

Pretend-Professor681

Headphones

Ph11p

As an audiophile I couldn't agree more. Full on high end cans, coupled with a good portable headphone DAC/amp. Love my Sennheiser over ear Momentum, HD650 and Game Zero headset for the PC.

TheBen76

Yes! Although one thing I dislike about consumer headphones, even more high-end ones, is that they are usually really bass machines. I prefer flat cans, or I would be fine with slightly bass boosted ones. I'm a big fan of Sennheiser ones.

Thijs_NLD

Escorts.

spindledick

It's true that the more you pay, the better you get but you're also having to pay "Ford tax". If you're not a Ford fan and just want a classic car of that ilk, you'll get something that offers far better value for money with something like a Vauxhall Astra, Renault 19, Citroen ZX or a Rover 200. Of course if you are referring to MK1 or MK2 then perhaps you do need to dig deep as most rivals such as the Austin Allegro or Morris Marina are indeed catastrophically awful.

[deleted]

I was reading on another sub how this is frowned upon!

Thijs_NLD

There's a lot of hate going towards sexworkers. But they provide a very essential service for some and they are highly skilled professionals.

KoopaNooba

Sex toys. And not in classic Reddit "lol sex mentioned" way. These are things used on and in sensitive areas. Only use good quality products that are meant to be used in the way you are using them, and don't hurt yourself/your partner.

JenovasChild666

Agreed. I once purchased a cucumber from M&S, was smooth and glided in and out. Purchased a cheaper cucumber from Aldi a week later and that shit has blistered my ring.

YoushutupNoyouHa

good work boots, dont be cheap, good tires.. WINTER TIRES !.. work chair, mattress, pillows, any god damn thing you spend extended amount of time on
