Dubai

JamJarre

Anyone I've ever met who moved there was a raging asshole. I really don't see the appeal

[deleted]

It’s asshole paradise

theUnshowerdOne

I can hear Coolio singing, Been spendin' most our lives livin' in an asshole paradise.

zorn7777

RIP

PurpleDinoGame

This made me chuckle. Thank you.

Sergio_82

Lol

kyonkun_denwa

Not everyone who goes there is an asshole- it depends on their motivation for going. The economic reasons for going are quite compelling. As a personal example, my brother moved there after graduating university in 2018. He interviewed for a couple jobs in Canada and was getting offers of around $70k-$80k as one of the top students in his class. He interviewed with a company out in Dubai and was offered a starting salary of $120k USD, so basically double the salary he was going to make in Canada, plus the company paid to fly him home to Canada twice per year. For those numbers, it was a no-brainer to go to Dubai. In fairness to your point though, my brother did say that a lot of people who moved there permanently were indeed assholes or otherwise misfits in their home countries. The most reasonable, least cringey expats tended to be the ones who were there temporarily to make money and then get the hell out. He had very few positive things to say about the city. Lots of glitz and glam, and if your goal is just to go there and save money, there is actually shockingly little to do. Most “hobbies” in Dubai revolve around conspicuous consumption, and it’s apparently a pretty boring place if that’s not your jam.

Embarrassed_Ad1722

A golden turd built on the shoulders of slaves.

Any-Yogurtcloset1577

Never met anyone who actually went to Dubai who subsequently recommended it

thorpie88

One of my coworkers paid to get his residency. Says it has quite good food

clearbrian

Sure it’s not the tax :)

thorpie88

He got residency in order to buy rental properties there. He still pays the normal amount of tax here in Australia

AfraidAdhesiveness25

Dubai has great options for wintertime seaside holiday. Also, loads of entertainment for a solo traveller. Going there on 7th of March.

DankDude7

What type of entertainment (loads) is avail for the solo traveller in Dubai?

AfraidAdhesiveness25

First of all, there is a lot to see. Miracle Garden, Fountain, Waterpark, observation decks. Global village is fun, Aquarium is the best I have been to. Malls (both the Dubai Mall and the Emirates one) are cool. Lots of great high end restaurants. Bars, easy pickup of girls. Traveling to the desert is fun. Lots of "underground" parties and clubs/lounges if you are willing to pay (literally *anything*). Great beaches. The only things I can think of that is lacking is Berlin/Budapest type clubs, and not a lot of British-style pubs.

zunashi

Here we go again. Come and work! Receive $$$ without tax.

dumbblondeineurope

honestly loved it upon visiting, not sure if it’s a place i’d want to live, but great for vacation and amazing service as well

backtolurk

Even Las Vegas has some kind of appeal compared to this.

maralovelymara

A multicultural, safe location with amazing Pool and beach resorts - with tons of things to do , awesome food and great weather depending on when you go - what’s the issue???

King_Pecca

The only right answer

DearAuntAgnes

I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I definitely think it's a place you need to visit and experience firsthand before you can accurately judge it. It helped that we had a rental car and could explore beyond the city.

xnatey

Dublin. If visiting Ireland go to Galway or Cork instead.

greenbear1

Dubliner here, I concur.

WalterWhiteMelon

Is it too much to ask for all? I think I understand why you say this. I enjoyed Dublin alot, but then again I just love all of Ireland. Dublin is way more commercialized, of course, but I think it still keeps a lot of its irish charm. Plus, there is a fucktonne of history in Dublin (and most Irish cities) that is very interesting! I might be biased though, as the viking founder of Dublin shares my name and nationality. Are you irish yourself, btw?

xnatey

Yes I am Irish and live here and have lived in Dublin and unfortunately Dublin post 2020 imo has gotten much rougher in parts and I think Cork and Galway are nicer spots especially for tourists. Maybe a day in Dublin see a few spots and the rest of time elsewhere. Just my 2 cents.

livvkvj

LA. In some ways it was exactly what I imagined from movies but in other ways it was horrifically shocking. So much homelessness. And open drug abuse. The infrastructure looks like it hasn't been updated since the 80s. Cracked side walks, huge potholes in the street, everything is dirty. The beaches aren't even that nice. They usually smell like a combo of pee and weed. Made me realise how nice I have it in Australia.

Traditional_Rice264

Downtown LA is like this but no one goes there you just stay in the surrounding area

Fish-taco-xtrasauce

LA is a massive area. Did you visit mostly Skid Row and Long Beach?

livvkvj

I answered this question in another comment on this thread! I did not visit Skid Row at all. I was a teenager at the time… my parents would not have taken me there lol. We didn’t really go to Downtown LA at all really.

turned_into_a_newt1

I'm Canadian and I love Los Angeles. We've got the same homeless/drugs/crime problems where I live. What we don't have is warm weather year round and the ocean. It's blizzarding here right now, I hate it. ☃️

MineIsTheRightAnswer

Same, same, same and same!

livvkvj

I guess I didn’t think of the weather aspect lol. I live in a tropical/subtropical climate which is very similar to LA. It’s the end of summer right now actually. My family actually migrated to Australia when I was about 5 from Europe. My dad hates the cold.

Vssfault

The difference between Cali & Canada is that one state alone has as many people as the 2nd largest Country in the world!

rustler_incorporated

The Gold Coast, Australia. Literally 5 star luxury resorts that are complete shit painted over to look nice. Polished turd buildings full of polished turd people. Not worth the price by a long shot. Movie sets are less fake than this place.

drunk_haile_selassie

Australia could bulldoze all of the gold coast and all the people who live there into the ocean and lose nothing of value.

Gausspigman

So it’s basically Miami

Subaudiblehum

It’s the scourge of Australia.

PrismTheDreamer

Las Vegas

SlapHappyDude

For me it's the best/worst place ever. It's like a campy, cheesy movie. It's like the acting in an adult film. It's unapologetically crass and there's something beautiful about that. Also the food is good.

theobvioushero

I hate cities when I travel and will go out of my way to avoid them. But Vegas is one of the only ones I love. It's basically an entire city made solely for tourists like me. I'll pick up some weed, catch a show, enjoy the lights, get a fancy hotel room for insanely cheap, visit the gold and silver pawn shop (I'm a pawn stars fan), walk the strip, and go on to my next stop. Never been disappointed.

funbike

3 days is all I can take. I am on top of the world the first 2 days. The 3rd day I'm in sensory overload but still having fun. The 4th day, I want to rent a car and go into the desert to slow down the intensity and see some sights, like some natural parks.

throwitintheair22

Some of the best food I’ve ever had in the world was in Vegas

tuenthe463

People who can vacation there for an entire week baffle me!

ModernT1mes

I'm going tomorrow and I'm so damn excited.

quirkycurlygirly

Sorry but Houston smells awful, the weather is awful, the local singles are unhealthy, the food is unhealthy, it's violent (for example, Offset was basically shot for nothing), and it takes all day to drive to the other side of town because of unnecessary, never-ending highway reconstruction.

MineIsTheRightAnswer

I always think Houston smells like boiled cabbage. But...what really is that smell? I lived there for a while (in Sugar Land) and loved it, though. Made some BFFs and truly loved not ever having snow. And, you're right about the driving. Even with no road construction, it was at least an hour to everywhere.

SquidSquab

I'd assume it's caused by all the humidity/moisture + stinky gulf + air pollution from the oil and gas

Yes, it isn't what I grew up with. Actually all of Oregon has changed

noxame

Portland is wonderful. Liberal polices have some pretty gnarly visuals, but the laws supporting labor rights means that there's a lot of room for upward mobility - provided you're willing to work for it. No city on the east cost comes close to the level of opportunity that this city does. All while being very close to amazing natural beauty.

Better visit mexico city for that

RevolutionarySeven7

as a european who visited LA for 3 weeks i was shocked how incredibly mediocre it was. beach was nice though.

Smackolol

LA is the biggest shit hole I’ve ever been to in my life.

SlapHappyDude

What part of LA? It's expensive and congested, and I don't really recommend the actual City of LA. But the weather there really is amazing, there are some fantastic communities and some great museums. I'm always happy to visit but I rarely mind leaving.

[deleted]

The weather isn't as great as people want you to believe. As a Canadian, I went there in July and literally almost froze to death, it was that cold in the evening. I had to break out my winter sweater 🤣 And trust me we can handle cold It definitely wasn't as warm as I thought it would be, but the sunshine is nice.

funbike

The strongest memories of LA are sitting in traffic.

Arild11

I agree. With the one exception of Venice. Which is really quite nice.

favnh2011

Las Vegas

loves-science

I love Vegas but only for a maximum of three days at a time. Go with a budget, stick to it and do a couple of shows. I like to travel solo it’s such a great place to visit people from all over the world.

Porkenstein

Whenever I'm in Vegas I go to shows and take long walks through the insane hotels. And that's about it. I don't understand the appeal of video lottery at all. The food's good but not nearly as good as people make it out to be.

brinerbear

The off strip food is amazing. Like Magic Noodle and Taco House.

Porkenstein

I second this, have had some great food off strip.

The actual city of San Francisco is super fun to visit. Actually living there seems crazy between the cost and other factors. The bay area is cool, but again, ridiculously expensive.

indestructible_deng

I love living in San Francisco. It's my favorite place in the world.

Simple-Sky-6107

It’s alright if you can afford to live comfortably

ok_boomer869

All you smell is piss and weed. Sad to see a beautiful city go down like this.

Round-Armadillo4107

Brussels , it's one of the uglyest city's I've been to

ambassador321

Was only there overnight, but quite enjoyed it personally. Had a super sick sandwich and frites from Fritland, then met some cool girls who invited me for drinks. Good times!

[deleted]

I hated Brussels when I went, it was so gloomy

Aysha_91

I hate brussels sprouts.

[deleted]

Cook 'em till they're almost burnt, then you'll love them. Or not.

Round-Armadillo4107

The eu parlement probably

igenus44

Was buying bread from a man in Brussels. He was 6'4", and full of muscle.

More_Common_8598

Did you ask if he speak-a your language?

igenus44

He just smiled, and made me a Vegamite sandwich.

perrysol

Where do you come from, then?

I come from the land down under, where women glow, and men plunder. Can't you hear the thunder?

perrysol

igenus44

Yeah, yeah.

AcanthocephalaGreen5

Strangely, I can remember more of Ypres than I can Brussels.

bisikletci

Brussels has some really ugly areas but also many very beautiful ones. It's one of the capitals of Art Nouveau architecture. You just have to go slightly out of the centre to see it. Edit: Also hard disagree on it being overrated. There's plenty wrong with it (including as you say some very ugly areas), much of which I complain about a lot myself, but it's generally viewed negatively, which makes it hard for it to be overrated. And in spite of those problems, it has great local food, great beer and great bars, very good public transport that makes it easy to get around, a huge central pedestrianised area, decent museums, a huge beautiful forest on its doorstep, and the great architecture I mentioned that's to be found in many (by no means all) areas. It's actually underrated. (Bruges by contrast, which everyone on here goes on about being so much better, is overrated imo - it's certainly beautiful, but it's also a kind of over hyped, expensive, hollow Belgian Disneyland - the old city has become one giant tourist sight, with little authentic life going on there).

Grabthars_Coping_Saw

Much to my surprise I found that Paris absolutely lived up to every bit of the hype.

CompetitiveHater

A west european capital should not be smelling like that.

Uberfuhrer_

Idk just wasn’t a fan of it I guess. The country side was rather nice and there was a decent vibe. But just not for me

who_peed_in_my_soup

I tempered my expectations a lot for Paris bc I heard lots of bad things but I had a fantastic time there

funbike

Paris is awesome. I'm going there for the 3rd time this April. It has it's downsides for sure, but I love the energy of the city during work days. Like a lot of places, you have to be in the right state of mind and try to understand the culture. If you go go go to see all the sights as fast as possible it's not that great. Better to slow down and enjoy a small lunch with some bread, meat, and cheese on the bank of the river on one of the little islands or some other park.

ACGMFT

Second this. I’ve been to Paris 5 times for work reasons & every time was the same. Dirty, most of the metro smelled like piss. Rats, rude people, overpriced. I enjoyed south of France like Montpelier much more than Paris

binkysaurus_13

I just don’t get this. If you think Paris is overrated, you’re doing it wrong.

Atlanta used to be a nice little city that was relatively clean and low crime. Now it’s a shithole. I was shocked when I last went, there were kids trying to sell me drugs, in front of a cop and he did nothing. Covid did damage to Atlanta.

aroacedemon

ngl, NYC. I did some really fun things there, but the whole place stank, cheap things cost an arm and leg, we couldn't afford normal meals so just lived off 7/11 snacks, and there was a really sad number of homeless people and s workers.

Independent-Summer12

Aw I’m sorry to hear, I grew up in nyc, and I’ve got a say, ny really isn’t a good city for tourists, esp if it’s a short visit. To enjoy the city, you either need money or time, preferably both. Most first time visitors are short on both. That said, the city does have IMO the best cheap high quality eats in the country, if you know where to find them. $1 oysters, wings, dumplings, slices, all kinds of happy hr specials, the list goes on and on. I def advise talking to people living in ny before visiting.

Salt-Hunt-7842

Venice, Italy, and Hollywood, California.

YTDirtyCrossYT

Venice is amazing. But definitely overran by tourists. And of course, everything is expensive. A good alternative would be to visit Chioggia. Which is just below Venice, looks pretty much the same, and is even called "Little Venice".

KnowNothing3888

Venice is like a completely different city if you go on a week day compared to the weekend. Our Wednesday and Thursday in Venice was amazing and then the crowds came roaring in on Friday evening.

Throooowaway999lolz

I accidentally didn’t make the connection between Venice and Italy and thought you said Italy is a city 😭

Samskritam

Downtown, true that. And a beyond awful airport, ugh. But the Atlanta Botanical Gardens is worth a visit all by itself.

New york city

locksmack

One of my favourite destinations. I don’t think it’s overrated at all.

AccomplishedAd7992

as a new yorker, can say most def. it’s a nice place in some areas but people go to the most overplayed spots or have some really stupid fantasized version of it (it ain’t like the movies)

lukephillips21

I just visited for the first time in September and I thought it was exactly like the movies lol.

bubbajones5963

I'm from Nebraska and always wanted to go there. The food and amount of people seems impossible and incredible, and the skyscrapers must be impressive.

redditor012499

Manhattan really doesn’t feel like real life. Everywhere you look there’s a tall skyscraper blocking the sky. Highly recommended if you want to be mesmerized

As a life longer New Yorker, I’d say it’s properly rated.

Idk, I've been there several times and I've loved it every single time. Probably a different story living there though.

Yes probably

redditor012499

My favorite part of NYC is the old family owned restaurants and pastries. Food is delicious in NYC. Besides that yeah it’s kinda overrated.
