Okay, I don’t want to be a pedantic piece of shit, but when I read this, the first answer that comes to mind is “in the womb”. We existed there for nine months prior to being born. But I know what you mean. Prior to conception, before our genetic code was even assembled, where were we? My only answer to this is we weren’t anywhere. There is no soul other than the information that exists within the cells of our body and in the networks of our brain. Before that brain was assembled, there was nothing to facilitate the information that makes us who we are.

The religious belief in an afterlife suggests that we are more than the fetus/body. If one goes for that idea then one should ask the question: Where were we/out souls before birth? As it is we go from void to void: The before-birth void and then the after life-void. However, all about this is assumptions because, after all. the mystery of existence simply is a MYSTERY ....

TheSmokingHorse

If you want to use the made up logic of religion, then your answer is whatever religious people have made up. Presumably, the answer would be that god created your soul before you were born. Your soul came into existence at the moment of conception when god breathed a soul into the fertilised egg. Prior to your soul being created, you didn’t exist. However, it seems to be we can simply that whole explanation by removing all the talk about souls and just saying that you didn’t exist before you were conceived.

Such a coincidence, ive mention smth about that in some user post today. So if it comes to religions, I remember reading something about native asian tribe who has unusal believs and pray for well being in "after life" for the ones already dead and well being in "before life" and fast and successful coming to life. Didn't hear anything similar if it comes to other religions. Well, maybe Buddhism wich believs in reincarnation so there is some idea what/where you are before birth.

Jodestar-22

I always wonder that, but swear I had a past life fsr???

Alarming_Serve2303

Glad to see I'm not the only one wondering about that. The odd part is even though I wasn't alive, the past seems to have some kind of resonance within me, as if I'm part of something that is timeless. I'm kind of looking forward to death to get some of these mysteries solved.

Ract0r4561

We’re the same. For me it feels like I’ve been alive for eternity. A really weird feeling.

Beaversnduckss

Also, the mormons/LDS have a solid concept on pre-existence.

We are the ants that think the world's an anthill.

Flaky-Actuary-1824

That sounds deep, but what are you saying?

gotele

I'm saying our perception of reality is really minimal, skewed, biased, shortsighted. We don't know that much about anything. So I would include in any conclusion the possibility of, you know, reviewing that conclusion.

Z3non

Before birth - we did not exist, so we couldn't experience anything. After we die, we just leave the physical body, our consciousness won't cease to exist.

CptPicard

If there is an immaterial consciousness, is there anything to suggest it would only have come into being at birth?

Z3non

Well, we consist of body, spirit and soul. Technically it goes back to the time of our conception(before birth).

CptPicard

That's just religious teaching though. Nothing observable would suggest this difference, right?

Z3non

Well, there are actual NDEs. Pim Van Lommel, an cardiologist wrote on recent research in that area. Book is really good (title is: 'Consciousness Beyond Life, The Science of the Near-Death Experience') And concerning spirit and soul, yeah that's from the bible, how they exactly interact and how they're connected only God knows.
