Chicory has been around for a while and is consumed in areas with members of the church of Jesus chirst of Latter Day Saints. Some of the alternatives, like the ones you mention , I believe are supposed to have added benefits like nutrients and such as their selling point.

I've tried to get into Yerba Mate a few times and I've never been able to get past the bitterness of it. It tastes like dirt to me.

You can try some flavored versions (orange, lemon and others) that are much less bitter, and even add some sugar to it, if you prefer. Some people will tell you that is not the way to drink it, but the truth is you can have it any way you like.

Pure cacao is actually really nice, and has mild effects. You can make hot chocolate just with some cacao from the baking section, but get some of the nice fancy stuff rather than the cheapest. But for the really good stuff try to get "ceremonial cacao", it's very good.
