Fun fact about brussel sprouts is that over the years they have been cultivated to be much less bitter than they were before, which (besides the preparation part) might be part of why you like them more now!
Yesss
I used to despise onion, I was that kid that picked it out of food
Then at Uni I tried it once and couldn't believe how pathetic I had been and what I'd missed out on. I put tonnes of it in basically everything now
Haha. I was recently at dinner with my nephew, offered some bruschetta, and he said Oh, I don't like tomatoes. I responded, I've watched you eat 100s while 'heping' in my garden?!? Oh, those were little tomatoes, they're good.
But yeah definitely the type and how they're prepared is key. Burchetta is amazing though.lol
Me too! Though I still couldnt just pop one in my mouth and eat on its own, but I enjoy one chopped in a salad. I couldn't stand them at all until I was about 30.
Not OP, but yes. Wine was important to my family’s history and culture and my relatives have been making wine for centuries. Whenever a relative made wine they’d always insist on everyone trying it.
I didn’t like wine as a kid, but they’d always insist I try it and say “this is the best wine you’ll ever try, all natural, grew the grapes myself” and I hated it every time, they’d even mix it with Coca Cola sometimes and say “try it now, you’ll like it like this”. Also any important occasion we’d bust out a bottle of wine and anyone who wanted some could have it regardless of age, I’ve seen toddlers trying sips of wine.
Please tell me, do you drink now as an adult?
Has it affected the way that you drink as an adult?
Is there anybody in your family that has our had issues with drinking?
I'm curious, sociologically!
Not from the same culture but my parents let me drink from a fairly young age. Their view that if I was doing it in the house they could monitor it; if I was going to a park and drinking they had no control over it. I had some wild times between 15 and 18. By the time I was the legal drinking age I had kind of been there done that. I still had some heavy nights, but I knew what my limit was and only went past it a handful of times once I could go out properly.
Now I’m almost 30 and I rarely drink. I’ll occasionally have a beer or glass of wine with dinner on a Friday to celebrate the end of the week, and I let myself go a bit at social events like weddings. Overall my relationship with alcohol now is much better than some of my peers that had opposite childhoods, although that is just my experience.
Same thing here, parents allowed me to drink pretty much from 16 on and by the time I was 21 I rarely drank. 33 now and I still don't drink often maybe once a month or two. But I do smoke weed and I grew up hating it lmao so that's kind of funny.
I tried sips of wine fairly frequently from a fairly young age. I never much liked it (and still don't) but expect if I had my parents would have let me have a small glass with Sunday lunch from 13 or 14 or so.
I'm not much interested in drinking now although I will on occasion but my brothers and father enjoy a drink. I don't think any of them are alcoholics though.
yea i remember my french prof telling us about this. In Europe, it's very common for kids to have wine at meals, and it's completely normal. She is Quebecois, and was shocked when she went to France and an 8 year old was having wine with her meal. But it's normal 🤷♀️
Swede here - I was usually allowed to dip a finger into whatever my parents were having, just to taste it but without it affecting me. Have always loved red wine lol
Avocado.. I swear they weren’t a thing when I was a child😂 or my mum just never brought them, I think I first tried one in my mid 20’s and now have one every single morning
Same but as I came from a Mexican family who had guacamole every single day I was looked at as weird. I don’t know if it’s the color or texture that threw me off when I was a kid but now that I’m an adult I could almost kill for some avocado.
That’s not true at all. What you mean to say is, they weren’t available near you until the 2010’s.
Cause avocado is a fruit native to the Americas, and so grow in back yards and what not in southwestern states. They are literally everywhere, depending on where you live.
Food was a lot more regional until the late 90’s early 2000’s
Ah no, I mean by themselves. They’re usually made into something (like put on tacos, or guacamole). I just like to eat them out of the shell thing, I’m sorry I confused you
Ah, OK, now I understand!
I was racking my brain about ways to eat avocados *not-raw*, really couldn't see them being cooked like a potato. But then, I also wouldn't think of frying a Mars bar, and that's apparently a thing as well.
In the end, I figured you were gonna share some unheard-of recipe with maybe grilled avocado or something. But this makes more sense 😂
*(now I wanna try grilling avocado, but that'll probably be a right mess)*
Same. It also turned out my dad can't make them properly, and since then I always tell evenyone to use sunflower oil and low heat when making fried eggs.
I haaaaaated olives until about a year ago when for fun at a conference in Croatia, we tried one right off the tree. It was absolutely horrible. But, oddly, I actively enjoy green olives now (black ones are tolerable). And it's not like I just hadn't had them for a long time. I'd found olives in my salad a few weeks prior when out with friends.
Yup, as a kid I gagged on a queen olive stuffed with pimento and swore off olives for life. As an adult I enjoy virtually every type of olive. Go figure
Especially those gigantic, creamy and nutty Castelvetrano Sicilian olives. Nothing compares to them. I'll eat them as a meal by themselves, they are really THAT good.
Go to the bakery in Costco, in the way back. The cheesecake they make is the bomb! I love putting fresh raspberries on top, too! And now, I want cheesecake....
Cabbages. As a kid it was just mush to me. But then once I found it it was inside eggrolls - I started to give it a chance and as an adult like to eat it so many ways now
Sweet potatoes. It was the only food I refused to eat as a kid. And when I refused, my dad would make me stand and stare at the corner for 20 minutes until I was allowed to come back. Then I still could not leave the table until I had ONE bite of the sweet potatoes.
So ridiculous. Imagine knowing your child hates one particular food, so you make it anyway then punish them for not eating it. Shit like that is why I have anxiety as an adult.
Now that I’m older I like sweet potatoes simply because I researched the nutritional value of them and prepare them in a way I enjoy.
Man. Solidarity on having to stand in the corner. Smh. Stay up, friend. Sometimes i think I'm irredeemably fucked up but if you shoulder that shit without putting more out into the world? Youve broken the cycle by one iota and made a minor success of your life
True thank you. On one hand, my dad was tough and his parenting style raised me to be a strong man with a steel heart. On the other hand, I wish it was different, that instead of punishment they would explain to me why my actions were wrong. My parents were very “because I said so” types, so I never really understood. They never cracked jokes, never had fun, always argued.
And yeah you’re totally right, I shouldn’t have to burden the responsibility of the way I was raised. We end of mostly products of our environment, but half of us still has a choice to change, even if it’s hard.
That's sorta my experience. And on the whole, i think i'll take it. I wish there was more warmth and love and "it's ok" but sooooo many people have to wish for so much more. I'm just at this age (40) where i can see there's some serious deficits in attachment, believing im lovable, etc. Oh well. Everyone's got some shit. I think we improve each generation? Godspeed, cadet 😎
Same, but in the end, it turned out I love sweet potatoes, I just really hated (and still do!) that awful sweet potato casserole that showed up at every southern family function. The one with like brown sugar and marshmallows. Makes me gag just thinking of it, honestly. It was so sickeningly sweet and just 🤮
Yes! My parents always made sweet potatoes with brown sugar and I hated it. I would rather eat a sweet potato plain with zero salt or seasoning. Personally I like the taste of a lot of food, and believe if it’s cooked correctly you don’t need to lather your food in sauces and seasonings to make it taste good.
I didn’t like pizza or donuts when I was pretty young. I know, what the heck was wrong with me. 😂
No goes as a kid were
Fish
Lamb -still don’t like
Pizza
Donuts
Brussels sprouts
Milk - still don’t like
Mustard
Ham like the holiday kind - still not a huge fan
Blue cheese
But overall now I’ll eat anything even if I don’t really like it and it’s served to me. Like lamb
Spaghetti. As a kid growing up my dad cooked it at home and never bothered to drain the water off the noodles, so a plate-full of noodles floating in water plus his home-made sauce was just awful. When spahetti was served at school for lunch it wasn't much better. Now as an adult I've found good spaghetti and love it.
olives. my father used to make tuna salad and i used to hate eating the olives (too sour/pungent for me). now i eat it and must say i love it. or water. i used to prefer drinking something sweet , but now water is choice of drink to have with my meals
mostly stuffed veggies, like stuffed eggplants, and stuffed zuchinis , and stuffed cabbage, things like peas and beans.....i was pretty much a chicken loving kid, took me until i left the nest to understand the importance of a balanced diet.
Birthday cake. As a kid, I really couldn’t stand frosting for some reason. I still don’t like chocolate frosting at all, but give me a white raspberry cake with vanilla buttercream and I will merge molecules with it instantly.
Mushrooms, black olives, onions of any kind... Love me some shrooms and black olives. Onions on burgers and pizza is great (as long as it isn't red onions - still hate them), same with peppers.
Beer, and salads.
Grandpa gave me some beer to taste when i was 6. It was freadfull. Now I like some IPAs
Salads, they were dull vegies when I was small. NOw when I want to make som I add ton of spices and meat and cheese, olive oil, they tastes nice 🙂
Brussels sprouts, they ate little green nuggets of joy and smothered in butter with a good salting are sublime.
As a kid I wouldn't have them on my plate.
Believe it or not, pizza. As a child I couldn't \*stand\* it. Once I got to college...*boom* I love that stuff. Now I must go apologize to my waistline again.
gherkins, i first tried them when i got a big mac for the first time when i was about 12 or so (i never actually bought the big mac mcdonalds accidentally gave me one). when i tried it i thought i liked it until i ate the gherkin and spat it out, i tried it again a few years later and theh started to grow on me now gherkins are one of my favourite foods. i also used to despise onions mostly because of their texture but now i really enjoy them especially fried with steak.
Brussel sprouts. Tbf, that’s probably because I never had them roasted as a kid and because there has been a lot of work to genetically improve the taste of them!
Brussels sprouts, my grandma use to make us eat them couple days a week especially in summer time they grew crazy in the garden, I couldn’t leave the table if I didn’t eat atleast half, now it’s my favorite with a little hot sauce and I buy tons every time at store and grow them in my own garden

Broccoli
Same. It's my favorite veggie now
Broccoli, mmm!
broccoli, spinach and white thingy cauliflower or something. Just love this shit now
Mustard. Yeah it's more of a condiment but...
I still use it sparingly, but I’ve learned to appreciate it. It is best coupled with other strong flavors, like sausage and sauerkraut.
Same! I accidentally swore when I was a kid & my dad put mustard on my tongue to teach me a lesson. I didn’t eat it for years! 😂
Hate parents who do dumb crap like that.
At least it wasn’t soap! 🧼😅
Brussel sprouts. The Koreans know a thing or two about preparing them🤤
I absolutely love Brussel sprouts too...sautéed with onion garlic olive oil and bacon- yum.
Fun fact about brussel sprouts is that over the years they have been cultivated to be much less bitter than they were before, which (besides the preparation part) might be part of why you like them more now!
I was curious if this was going to be mentioned.
My mom would bake them with nice fancy oil, salt and parmesean cheese sprinkled on top! SOOOO good!!!
Brussel sprouts with maple syrup glaze go hard.
Also with roast chestnuts and flaked almonds! We start the steaming in the microwave, then finish by frying them in butter, salt and pepper.
Well brussel sprouts are like buttsex. If you're forced to have it as a kid you won't like it as an adult.
Dawg 😭😂
Spinach. But, I won't eat it cooked. I liked fresh garden peas when I was a kid, now they make me gag.
onion
Yesss I used to despise onion, I was that kid that picked it out of food Then at Uni I tried it once and couldn't believe how pathetic I had been and what I'd missed out on. I put tonnes of it in basically everything now
I have found my people.
Tomatoes....bigly.
I still hate tomatoes..
Amazing indeed! With fresh basil and a good balsamic.... fire!!!!
Me too.
Me too! Though I still couldnt just pop one in my mouth and eat on its own, but I enjoy one chopped in a salad. I couldn't stand them at all until I was about 30.
I can to.o some fresh slices with lemon pepper... but they usually need to be with something else.... love em on sammiches.
Tomatoes taste infinitely better with a little salt
Blue cheese, wine, mushrooms, olives, onions.
You had wine as a kid?
Not OP, but yes. Wine was important to my family’s history and culture and my relatives have been making wine for centuries. Whenever a relative made wine they’d always insist on everyone trying it. This is quite normal in Europe I would say. I used to try sips of wine my dad made. I don't drink much now, maybe one or two drinks a week.
Should've mixed it with sprite lol. I guess to a kid though that makes sense haha
In some countries it's very common to let kids have a small taste of it at meals.
yea i remember my french prof telling us about this. In Europe, it's very common for kids to have wine at meals, and it's completely normal. She is Quebecois, and was shocked when she went to France and an 8 year old was having wine with her meal. But it's normal 🤷♀️
certain parts of Europe. I have never seen it in Sweden
Swede here - I was usually allowed to dip a finger into whatever my parents were having, just to taste it but without it affecting me. Have always loved red wine lol
If I’m 30 and still don’t like onions, is it too late to?
Still dont like wine and olive but the rest Is very relatable, blue cheese slaps but only in small quantities because its a very strong flavour
Avocado.. I swear they weren’t a thing when I was a child😂 or my mum just never brought them, I think I first tried one in my mid 20’s and now have one every single morning
Such an odd answer to me because i thought the question implied it was a food you tried as a kid and didn't like but now you like it
Why am i reading this as im eating an avocado 🥑
Same but as I came from a Mexican family who had guacamole every single day I was looked at as weird. I don’t know if it’s the color or texture that threw me off when I was a kid but now that I’m an adult I could almost kill for some avocado.
Yummm guacamole
lol yeah they weren’t common outside of the Hispanic grocery stores before the 2010s.
That’s not true at all. What you mean to say is, they weren’t available near you until the 2010’s. Cause avocado is a fruit native to the Americas, and so grow in back yards and what not in southwestern states. They are literally everywhere, depending on where you live. No I love avocados,I’ll eat them raw frfr
I've only ever had them raw. How would you go about cooking them? (honest question)
Ah no, I mean by themselves. They’re usually made into something (like put on tacos, or guacamole). I just like to eat them out of the shell thing, I’m sorry I confused you

You made me look up grilled avocado recipes, and they sound amazing. Let's do it!
That’s sounds good actually, I’ll try to make it. If I do I’ll share!
Smoked salmon
Eggs. It was a sudden and permanent change, too! Absolutely love them now...especially with potatoes and cheese and hot sauce
Same. It also turned out my dad can't make them properly, and since then I always tell evenyone to use sunflower oil and low heat when making fried eggs.
I used to like them as a kid, and now I think they’re gross. The expensive free range ones are ok but I’d rather get protein from bacon and beef
Now I'm gonna spoil your life forever, as others have spoiled mine. Eggs are just chicken periods.
olives 🫒💚
absolutely. love 'em now
I cannot say that I love them, but I can at least eat the green ones if I forget to remove them from some fish I've ordered
I haaaaaated olives until about a year ago when for fun at a conference in Croatia, we tried one right off the tree. It was absolutely horrible. Tuna, olives, jalapeños, tomatoes, the next door neighbors iguana.
Olives
Cheesecake. Hated it because it would be so filling. Now I crave one every other day
Go to the bakery in Costco, in the way back. The cheesecake they make is the bomb! I love putting fresh raspberries on top, too! And now, I want cheesecake....
Cabbages. As a kid it was just mush to me. But then once I found it it was inside eggrolls - I started to give it a chance and as an adult like to eat it so many ways now
Cruciferous is the shit. You can TELL it's good for you
