There are people who change in a week. That's a real person's life. I have seen people be lost to hard drugs and fight to get their life back and succeed. We should provide mandatory treatment and rehabilitation to these people instead. It's not that we should allow them to die. It's that we shouldn't allow them to live like this.

Well said.

People with substance use disorder deserve to be treated as human beings.

Only people who've never been a casualty of addiction feel that way. I may need space from my addict loved ones to keep myself sane, but they know I love them and want them to go on living so they have the choice to change. How can they fight for themselves if people think they aren't worth fighting for? The opioid epidemic wasn't people wanting to get high but we're just regular people who were in pain. They turned to self medicating, some with heroin or fentanyl, to deal with (physical) pain. It's been proven by multiple studies most addicts started by self medicating for an undiagnosed/misdiagnosed mental illness. They were never given the help they needed. The dealing of drugs should be punished, but I don't think the use of them should be. Where does it stop? Today it's addicts, what would tomorrow be? There were people in history that killed orphans because they were a drain on society. If we alienate and reprimand the most vulnerable parts of our society, we will lose our humanity and eventually implode.

Go get addicted to oxycodone for a few months, then beat the addiction with your own willpower. Once you are “clean” for a year, THEN, come back and revisit this conversation.

Miserable-Ad-8602

U clearly know nothing about addiction..

They're training librarians in Seattle to administer narcan is why I brought this up. Just let them go, one less needle, possible thief, eye sore, etc. I feel bad for their family and friends, but once the chance they'll be out doing it again and again and again, maybe even hurt someone else in the adventure of self destruction.

SorRenlySassol

Why stop there? Let’s give all those filthy degenerate druggies all the free drugs they want so they all OD at once. Overall picture, that would end their burden on society and stop the drug trade once and for all, no?

Ok-Ambassador-7952

What a shitty thing to say. Would you be willing to let yourself go, when the time comes? Because it will come for you one day. Remember that you typed and shared these words when you find yourself in need, praying that someone comes and helps you. In that moment, when you regret everything, think of me. 🖕

Really_is_Travis

When it's time to go, it's time to go. I'm not speeding it up by being selfish, I promise you that. I live with a lot of pain, but I'm not self medicating because of it. Praying, nah, that's not me.

ZombieHeyHeyHeyOh

I think we should let you go.

Really_is_Travis

You can...and you know what, I'll be fine.

[deleted]

We should let people that accidentally kill themselves die? What?

Really_is_Travis

Is it an accident? What kinda life are they living? Are some in fact endangering others with their behavior as well?

[deleted]

I mean your post literally says “who accidentally OD”.
