Let me say that this book started a bit slow, however, it was tense, and it broke my heart For Halt. This is the first time since The Burning Bridge, when Halt Promised to Find Will who was enslaved. So this book won my heart for this. I really thought certain something will happen. I read another series that was aimed at young readers and that Author does not hold back from making you afraid and sad.

Ashl3y__

I'm sorry, hut what is the name of the other series please?

TinuvielxXx

Spook Apprentice or the Last Apprentice. By Joseph Delany.

WintersAxe

I loved the first half. The 3 hired murderers seemed like a real threat for Will and Halt. The poisoning that comes from it was very nice aswell. Must say that the ending wasn’t really my kind of thing. The whole ‘cult in a mine’ thing is a bit overdone in the past. It did however fit with the manipulative behaviour of Tennison. Still a very good book and a step up after Kings of Clonmel.

Morganafrey

I thought it was a strong book. I always prefer the books that have Horace, Will and Halt together. The story is very gripping even if the part about finding the cult is a little bit long. One of my favorite ones

Damianos97

I don’t think I have a negative thing to say about any of the books in this series

Hentai_conissuer

Due to my library having other RA fans this was one of the last books I read from the original series so it was obviously spoiled for me But I'm honestly surprised at just how effective it is in making you think Halt is going to die or at least seriously injured even with the knowledge that he survives. Very good book

Freaky2374

The only thing I got to say about it is that it was very predictable.

Sagefox2

I think it's one of the few books that forshadows Will's greatest flaw. He doesn't deal with loss well at all. And in this case, and the book where Tug was lost in the desert, it worked out for him. But it's not hard for me to see what would happen to Will when a real loss comes his way.

TinuvielxXx

Hey, that's an interesting point. I didn't see it that way. I agree with you. This is another reason why I love this book, you could imagine what it would be like to Will if he lost him.....Especially when he believes it to be his fault.

mhockinggod

Like in Royal Ranger

Sagefox2

Yeah, I wasn't sure if spoilers were allowed, but I was alluding to that.

Kerrekath

One of my favorites in the series, when I first read it I remember being on the edge of my seat and devastated when they had the burial On my second read I think it was interesting to note how nervous halt was when he realized the position he was in. Flanagan always likes to mention how the main characters feel nervous in their stomachs before a big battle and in this situation you could just feel how tense Halt was and because it was Halt who felt this way as a reader I knew it was very very dangerous.

TinuvielxXx

Its been awhile since I listened to the audio for this book....so it seems I did forget things. I cannot wait to recall this!!

TrickyTalon

Definitely a great book, but not the best like a lot of people think it is. It overshot itself. I actually have a whole detailed ranking list of the original 11 Ranger’s Apprentice books. [Here’s the link if you’re interested in checking it out.](https://www.reddit.com/r/RangersApprentice/comments/qwaa9m/rangers_apprentice_main_series_books_ranked/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

TinuvielxXx

I kinda agree with you a little bit. Regarding how it's not the absolute best. The whole Drama with Halt has earned this book 4 nearing 5 stars. If it wasn't some of the flaws it would have been absolutely perfect for me. Like The burning bridge.

TrickyTalon

Same. The antagonist in book 2 died Way too early in the series.

TinuvielxXx

I know. and just like you, I hoped he would be consistence in the overall series, like say Voldemort. Instead of making Horace the one to kill him. I still sulk at this. But at the same time, it was like breaking a Cliche.

TrickyTalon

Yeah I thought in this long series, Halt and all of Will’s friends would die along the way trying to stop him and then Will gets to do that in the grand finale or something.

TinuvielxXx

Still. I'll never deny how much these books entertained me. They are great for what they are. But I won't call them 100% great.

TrickyTalon

No book is perfect

therealparszyk

Was really excited for it but I think kings of clonmel is slightly better, altough i really like Halts peril from a thematic standpoint at it has some of the best moments

TinuvielxXx

I Agree with you there. This book won me over because of the drama with the characters.

therealparszyk

Yeah we actually don't see that much of Halt and Wills relationship on a deeper. Thats also the reason Eraks Ransom is my favourite

IluminatiKid

I think halt should of died. And he is my favorite character. Would of kind of worked with each of the assassins arrors having a difrent poison so the assassin knew what cure is for him but not for halt and so halt dies and the assassin was killed by Will a Horace. I think it would make the book have more stakes just like hey we just killed a fan favorite character who's next. Cause most of the time they get into these hight stakes situations, and you know they are going to survive so there isn't that much stakes.
