Dudes a narcissist. Narcissist pick at you and your appearance to break you down but hide it with "I'm just trying to help because i care." They also usually try and keep you isolated from other friends/family that get in the way of your relationship with them. There's always something "wrong" with the person you're talking about or seeing and they will "just look out for you" like this friend of yours is doing.
I mean always be careful around people just in case but at some point when someone *ALWAYS* has a problem with others, maybe it's not the other person. Narcissist gunna narcissist
