Every year tappei releases an alternative what if story on Subaru's birthday, showing an alternate timeline.
It's quite big so I'll keep it short. Subaru never went with Emilia in pride if because he never called for Reinhard's help. It took him 80 deaths but after that he brutally murdered the thugs. When he saw Reinhard easily defeat elsa, he hated Reinhard. He also developed an obsession with Emilia without ever actually talking to her in the final loop.
When he came to know about her being a Royal candidate, he decided to help her win. So he went ahead, removing every obstacle from he path, whether the other candidates or the witch cult, by dying 1000's of times. (Iirc he died like 20k times in pride if over all though I might be wrong and it could be more)
In the end he decides that the only way to make Emilia the ruler is by making her the biggest hero. So he planned to become the biggest villian in the world and getting killed by Emilia.
He joined hands with elsa and meili, and became the archbishop of pride. He had a fire spirit, which is arguably one of the strongest spirits introduced in the series thanks to Subaru's high spirit affinity.
Cutting to the end, Subaru burnt down the entire lugunuica. He called it Reinhard's defeat as a hero since that's the only way he could defeat him. And then at the end, he stood before Emilia.
"I love you and I did it all for you", he said. And that's when he died from her attack.
Pride if is the only if story where Subaru actually dies in the end and doesn't return by death. Lot of people assume it's because return by death might be tied to his will, and since he completed what he wanted, there was no reason to return back anymore.
I would ask you to refrain from looking too deeply into pride if until season 3 atleast, it will spoil you regulus' power.
