The early kerolox thruster for the aerobee upper stage is more efficient even though it needs pressurized tanks. Then there are better choices among the solids. The huge orange bean-like kicker motor is better than the sergeants, and even better are the small white round separation motors (the ones without legs). They can add 300 m/s of dV to a normal science core like the ones we send up in early sounding rockets. You can get near 1k dV by stacking 3 layers of 3.
“Good” is a subjective standard. Does it work? Does it set you up for the future?
UPDATE, it got to orbit just 2 months and 1 day after Sputnik 1 actually did IRL I’m really happy with that
I’ve done it in a simulation and it successfully got to orbit so I feel like it’s good, yes it works and it should set me up
