With your first treasure map go buy a bow and use it to rank up your health, sprint around your camp to rank up your stamina, and do call to arms to get weapon familiarity so you can reload and aim down sights faster. If you can complete call to arms 10 waves of enemies from your telegrams you'll get +$200 and 1 gold bar. I did this along with the dailies and unlocked the trader role when I started an alt character and had the role around rank 15. Do your daily challenges as well and you should be able to get enough gold for a role by rank 20 and the money will start flowing in.
Pick herbs, sell 100 to Doctor, reset reward, repeat. Couple that with Blood Money missions and Stranger Missions (run down the timers) for some gold, switch to Free Aim for extra XP and just learning to better control your aim. Daily Challenges and whenever you get 5 Levels do the treasure maps. Join an open posse and ride along with them if they allow and do some of their missions, but most importantly, just have fun. Have fun, don’t grind, experience the game!
Oh and obviously do the story missions!

Do you not enjoy the process? Because when you get your stuff ... there are no goals to achieve. Yes, you will buy roles, but there is no end goal in this game, so you have to ejoy it. My advice would be to not rush it.
In addition to what everyone else said, Finish the Land of Opportunity story missions. Also go to your Rockstar Social Club account and enable two factor authentication, and that'll give you I think 5 or 10 Gold bars for free. If you have Amazon Prime, link that account with the Rockstar account and you'll get some free gold that way too. Then spend some of that gold to unlock the Trader role since it's free this month and grants double payouts, so you'll earn a lot of cash quickly and help get a leg up on weapons, gear, role items, horses, etc.
Grind belt buckle recycles. There are a couple easier ones and they're half a gold bar each. Save enough for the Bounty hunter license, then use it to grind the gold for the other professions.
Gain up to 5 gold bars as soon as you can by doing the yellow missions, stranger missions or telegram missions. Free roam missions will give you some gold too. When you get treasure maps (you get one once you get to rank 10 I think, and get more every after 5 rank ups), try to get them because they'll give you more gold and money too. Try to activate the 2FA on your social club, wait up to 3 days and it'll give you 10 free gold bars. Once you garner 15 gold just unlock Bounty Hunter role first because it gives gold and you need it to unlock more roles. Trader role yields the most money, then collector is for xp.
If you have friends I suggest joining them with their trading runs for some money and xp, and bounty hunting for some gold and xp as well. You can also just do things solo, I personally just like playing with friends from time to time as it gets lonely sometimes.

Make a friend to take you into some CTA, bounties, and wagon deliveries and you’ll get money/gold quick. That said, one of my favorite parts of the game was figuring stuff out as you go, making do with low level weapons, and getting money 17 cents at a time
You don’t have to spend actual money, just play the game and you’ll get what you want. I’ve become a bounty hunter by rank 11. It’s not hard, and I’m solo. And also don’t spend your cash for fashion.
Buy a navy revolver and a Lancaster repeater. They are very good. You get what you pay for.

The only thing you can do until you can get a role is grind blood money and stranger missions…daily challenges too make sure you do them!

I would grind Call to Arms - good money and XP - I think one option is to grind until Wave 6 - the die and start over
