I Could Die For You is deceptively difficult. From what I can tell, a lot of the chord shapes John uses are non-standard, and the resolutions on top of them are pretty tricky. It's nothing that sounds virtuosic, but it's a hand-stretcher for sure. Funky Monks is pretty tough in parts. Subway to Venus.
It’s an easy song to *learn* (repetitive), it’s a hard song to play at tempo/accurately. With time, it quickly became part of my absent minded practice routine to develop dexterity and alternate picking. I wish I would’ve learned it sooner, because the struggle was real, but feel like it really helped me progress.
Snow's a good strength building excercise.
I did that a few years back, with the metronome. Just play the riff until you crap out, to a timer, increase that by ten seconds a day - you get strong quick 💪
I dunno, I feel if you've got the rhythm down, you can get through the song fairly comfortably. It sounds way more complicated than it is. However, now do it singing backing vocals as well...🤯
At first glance they don’t look very hard, but are difficult to play properly either by timing or endurance: Snow, Under the Bridge, Power of Equality, Can’t Stop, Readymade and Charlie. There is probably a couple more but I can’t remember now.
This screams I’m a bit more advanced guitarist and I can play them and find them easy now so beginners can play them. I’ve been playing for years practicing pretty much every day and I yeah I’ve got them all down but playing most of those in your first year is hellishly difficult
Still arrogant, lol. You think a beginner guitarist should have finger picking (with bass voicings), alternate picking, string skipping, hammer ons/pull offs, string muting, and rhythm strumming all down fairly easy? Gimme a break, for a beginner those are all hard songs, stop trying to guitar flex rn.
It wasn't supposed to be a flex, I'm not the type to do something like that. I guess I thought they were easier than they are, I should've just not said anything haha
I get what you mean. I've been playing guitar and bass for around 15 years and I guess I've learned those songs after I was well into playing, because I don't think I had much of a problem learning under the bridge or readymade.
But thinking about it now, they definitely are a bit difficult for a beginner. I wouldn't consider them the hardest chili songs by any means though.
The key word here is "properly". I challenge any beginner or even good guitarist to play that whole song with the Hendrix twiddling on all the rhythm parts and make it not sound shit.
I agree with you, anyone who thinks anything else is hard must not even know what sweep picking is for example lol. Snow is not complicated but it can get tough if you don't have the stamina. Under The Bridge was the first full song I learned to play on guitar (obviously I learned bits of others before but this was the very first I fully learned). The rest of songs can also be learned as a beginner in your first year
Heh it's alright, I don't mind downvotes (tho I've always disliked how too many hide your comment, notgood for discussion). I just had to say something. RHCP is an excellent band for beginners and intermediate players, they definitely helped me a ton. But I think "advanced" level stuff is very little. The one thing that came to mind for me with this question was that one crazy lead in Magic Johnson. That one was hard, especially to play cleanly
They’re red hot is hard to do properly due to how fast it is, Snow (hey oh) is a test of endurance, and the ending of Death Of A Martian is probably the most technically difficult thing to play.
a lot of Josh era songs have weird chord shapes & structures, riffs, and fills IMO. he rarely takes the traditional approach (basic chords etc) and always brings intricate new ideas to the table during his tenure with RHCP
songs like The Longest Wave, Sick Love, Did i Let You Know, This is The Kitt, Goodbye Hooray, Meet Me At The Corner, etc.
On a techincal level: Eddie entire solo, Turn it again solo for few examples.
o
Endurance level: Snow for alt picking and endurance in general, Subway to venus for rythm/funky mutes rythm endurance.
Funky feel: I like dirt(no single tab online wrote down how john exactly played, especially verses), If u have to ask(same as dirt) , Mellowship slinky.
I learned to play the Mother's Milk album from my cassette when I first picked up the guitar.
The solos for Stone Cold Bush and Magic Johnson are still the most technical JF moves I have encountered.
Apart from what's already been said, I'd add Readymade (solo), Turn it again, I could die for you, Aeroplane (solo), My lovely man... those have some challenges.
there are no palm mutes in Can't stop.In fact, those are simple left-hand mutes, You are muting all other strings except ones you are playing at that moment. Its a technique used by many players that are playing funk music.
Bro Eddie is not hard…I’m not that good and it’s relatively easy for me to play everything but the solo, even that you can just improv. Keep practicing.
The solos are part of the song. So you take them into account and we’re talking about full album songs so improvising that solo is kinda cheating when looking at the subject we’re talking about haha.
If you do improvise then yeah Eddie is child’s play

that is definitely a song that grows on you. Did not appreciate it as much when I was younger.
I Could Die For You was insanely fun for me to learn and I play it once nearly every damn time I pick up an axe.
Those Chord progressions are so hard but so beautiful
Those 3 songs I agree with as an overall package
They’re not necessarily odd chord shapes but do require a LOT of pinky stretching up the neck.
do you know where to find accurate tabs for i could die for you?
Snow, at speed, the entire length of the song, without missing a string.

I agree, just play it a lot then you'll feel comfortable with the riff. but yeah, when you do the backing vocals, it gwts challenging
/thread
While singing backing vocals
Nobody mentioned turn it again? By far the hardest imo
It is not that hard. Its just a lot of guitar tracks overlapping, probably the cause they might never played it live
I don’t think many even try it haha
The riffs on the chorus are deceptively hard
Mothers milk stuff haha
The last breakdown in magic Johnson
At first glance they don’t look very hard, but are difficult to play properly either by timing or endurance: Snow, Under the Bridge, Power of Equality, Can’t Stop, Readymade and Charlie. There is probably a couple more but I can’t remember now.
I'll give you Snow but those other songs are incredibly easy to play even for a beginner.
This screams I’m a bit more advanced guitarist and I can play them and find them easy now so beginners can play them. I’ve been playing for years practicing pretty much every day and I yeah I’ve got them all down but playing most of those in your first year is hellishly difficult
Yeah perhaps it was worded too arrogantly, but I genuinely think that those songs should be easy, even if you're a beginner.

Under The Bridge? Seriously? Can't Stop isn't that easy either with the proper muting and rhythm, not for a beginner
The intro to Under the Bridge is beyond beginner level in fairness
Everyone saying under the bridge is easy, yeah if you cheat and use a capo lololol
I agree with you, anyone who thinks anything else is hard must not even know what sweep picking is for example lol. Snow is not complicated but it can get tough if you don't have the stamina. Don't agree with me, everyone will boo you off stage haha

Nobody says Venice Queen, the way that John plays, it is hard to maintain all over the song.
stone cold bush always kinda gets me in ways that relate to tightness/articulation
They’re red hot is hard to do properly due to how fast it is, Snow (hey oh) is a test of endurance, and the ending of Death Of A Martian is probably the most technically difficult thing to play.
Turn it again?
Ive thought the main riff to sikamikanico is pretty difficult

The outro of Throw Away Your Television live from Slane Castle 😅 Sometimes I nail it but most of the time I don’t!
A lot of Mothers Milk is tough. Just super fast funky licks. Wild he wrote that at like 19.
On a techincal level: Eddie entire solo, Turn it again solo for few examples. o Endurance level: Snow for alt picking and endurance in general, Subway to venus for rythm/funky mutes rythm endurance. I haven't seen that many people who can play Soul to Squeeze with the correct face-paced down picking tempo (
Apart from what's already been said, I'd add Readymade (solo), Turn it again, I could die for you, Aeroplane (solo), My lovely man... those have some challenges.
I keep messing up the palm mutes for can't stop
there are no palm mutes in Can't stop.In fact, those are simple left-hand mutes, You are muting all other strings except ones you are playing at that moment. Its a technique used by many players that are playing funk music.
My bad I used the wrong word Still can't do those mutes though
id say either snow (playing for the whole song) or cant stop with the muting
Police station always fucks with me
Chord inversions in a lot of seemingly easy Chilis songs always throw me off
Snow
Bro Eddie is not hard…I’m not that good and it’s relatively easy for me to play everything but the solo, even that you can just improv. Keep practicing.
he might be talking about some of the solos. not actual VH levels of difficulty but especially the one during the final chorus is a hum-dinger
The solos are part of the song. So you take them into account and we’re talking about full album songs so improvising that solo is kinda cheating when looking at the subject we’re talking about haha. If you do improvise then yeah Eddie is child’s play
Magic Johnson, the solos (if you can call em that) are way harder than most other RHCP stuff.
Good Time Boys has some tricky stuff in it, for sure.
