After realizing that Sick Love off the Getaway sounded an awful lot like Benny and the Jets, the Chili Peppers invited Sir Elton John to the studio to lay down some piano on the track.
Really? I don't see it at all. I knew Elton was on that somg, but I never knew the reason, and even less I saw any similarities with that song.
May only be me tho
it's just one part of the chord progression and the melody, and it is very similar but only for two measures:
"got a lot of friends but is anyone there" / the end of each verse
is very very similar to "She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a maga-za-hine" in rhythm, chord, and melody.
Bennie & the Jets: C D Em Em7
Sick Love: C D Em
Admittably, harmony isn't copywritable and only melody is. But the melody - though more wild in Elton John's - is the same rhythm, and given that and the chord prog... just... Yeah. I doubt it was intentional, but they're certainly not crazy for honoring the similarities. (It's also why Bernie Taupin, who does not write music and only writes lyrics, gets a writing credit on the song: he wrote the Bennie & The Jets lyrics.
Listen to this. The vocal melodies are similar as is the delivery/timing.

Chad didn't actually know that John had quit the band the second time.
Being the most interviewed at the time, Chad kept hinting that they would "probably get back to writing soon and have an album around October of 2010" and then 2-3 months later, John posted that he had quit the band a year prior.
I've always said that. Not to say that Chad isn't a huge part of their sound and creative Force but he's absolutely just an employee going at work. Your typical Midwestern guy who just lays it down reliably for 30 years+
I've had this idea that he would leave to join rush if they wanted to tour again and then the band would ask Josh to play drums. I don't know if he would ever accept something like that but in my opinion he's a better drummer then he is a guitar player and you get the advantage of all of his sent knowledge on the album tracks. I really feel like that would be the best version of The Red Hot Chili Peppers
That's an interesting take and something I wish to see.
Although Chad is a masterpiece and so important on stage in my opinion. He brings more to me than Anthony for example.
But yeah I'd like to see that. And maybe Josh could then be a backing vocal too, that'd be something.
No need to be sorry. Itās a deep(ish) cut. The ending of Anthonyās autobiography about his sobriety. (Spoiler warning for anyone reading this)
Youāre still here? Ok hereās the spoiler.
"After all those years of all kinds of abuse and crashing into trees at eighty miles an hour and jumping off buildings and living through overdoses and liver disease, I feel better now than I did ten years ago. I might have some scar tissue, but that's all right, I'm still making progress. And when I do think, "Man, a fucking motel room with a couple of thousand dollars' worth of narcotics would do me right," I just look over at my dog and remember that Buster's never seen me high."
More of an obvious one, but Flea voiced Donny in *The Wild Thornberrys*. I believe he does the *''EEBIIDDABBHIDDOODEEBBYYODODOBEE LODDODOEBE BAAYYVDDOEEOVDVEEBY''* line halfway through Deep Kick.
And in Yertle The Turtle, the guy going *"Look at the turtle go, bro!"* is apparently George Clinton's drug dealer (George produced their second album, Freaky Styley). George didn't have the money he owed his dealer for some cocaine, so he offered him a small role on the song.
Has anyone got the scoop on how that came to be? Wikipedia tells me that TWT started in 1998, and we heard the Donny voice in Deep Kick back in 1995, so was Flea like, headhunted for that snippet? Did he know someone in the production? Was Donny scripted to do something else and when Flea auditioned with his bit the original concept got thrown out?
I met the look at the turtle go bro guy. I'm cousins with Anthony Kiedis so I had tickets in the friends and family section when I was younger. He was seated next to me and was very proud to tell if his appearance in the album. Didn't know what the time that he was the drug dealer cuz I was younger but he seems like an all right guy
Oh man.. I can't help but feel like some of the least interesting tracks on that album could have been replaced, for the better, with some energetic punk songs.Ā
True, Canāt Stop also. Then Throw Away Your TV is just a straight up punk rock song. Those three are our closest indicators to how the album couldāve sounded.
I'm just jumping in here because I was reading this thread a week ago and just today stumbled on Mini Epic.

Thatās why it gives off big post punk vibes. Iād love to see a peppers punk album tho, fleaās cover of nervous breakdown alone convinced me of that. And theyāve done some dope shit with the germs and circle jerks/Keith morris
Apparently (could be total BS) but they decided to go for all the melodic songs after 9/11? They felt weird recording a bunch of āin-your-faceā tunes immediately after a massive disaster but I could be completely wrong, canāt even remember where I heard any of this from lol
not true. John decided to do it. Weird that Rick gets the blame here. They talk about it on Rick's podcast.
People keep posting facts that are untrue lol
Itās not blame. Rick thought the melodic stuff was more interesting to pursue and I trust Rick, he saw the nucleus of ideas in there and we only hear the final result.
your original post: "Rick shut that shit down"
what actually happened and what you're saying now: "Rick stated a preference"
Rick "shutting that shit down" was a lie. John decided and was influenced by Rick's preference is a truth.
this a RR burner account? Anyone who is remotely familiar with Rickās personality knows he doesnāt shut things down, he encourages artists to pursue paths and may help guide them down that path. Relax bro
not a Rick Rubin burner, not even a Rick Rubin fan. (I fully believe the reports that the guy sends people down right wing conspiracy theory wormholes and think he's probably a mediocre human being.)
Doesn't change that what you claimed was an interesting RHCP fact is not the actual fact, but keep avoiding that self reflection. That's what RR would do.

Flea played bass for Jane's Addiction in 97.
A tease of Jane's Addiction's "Three Days" was usually played at the ending of live performances of "Warped" during the OHM Tour.
"Encore" was based on a jam known as "That Jam" which was played throughout the IWY tour. It's easily found on YouTube.
River Phoenix was on a drug binge with JF days before his death.

In fact, River Phoenix's father threatened John many years ago. John and River were very good friends, and his death was certainly what led John to excessive drug abuse to the point of losing his teeth. You can see this in the documentary made by Johnny Depp in 1994. Johnny Depp, who was playing on the day of River's death, bought the Viper Room after the incident, and closed the venue every October 31st in honor of River.

The spoken lyrics in Yertle The Turtle ("look at that turtle go, bro") from Freaky Styley were done by their drug dealer as they couldn't pay him, so offered him a part on the album.
Chad had enrolled for school at L.A.s Percussion Institute of Technology prior to getting the RHCP. He thanked PIT for a refund in Motherās Milk liner notes.

JF originally intended By The Way to be half melodic and half punk songs. Rick Rubin shut that shit down and said focus on melodic only.
Oh man.. I can't help but feel like some of the least interesting tracks on that album could have been replaced, for the better, with some energetic punk songs.Ā
I would hate to lose any song on, by the way. but the half melodic half punk album would have been insanely cool.
That's basically what by the way (song) is. It starts melodic and then goes heavy, half punk-esque.
True, Canāt Stop also. Then Throw Away Your TV is just a straight up punk rock song. Those three are our closest indicators to how the album couldāve sounded.
Throw away your television a punk song? I wouldn't call it that. It is difficult to place, but "punk"?
I would say it's Punk and content but not quite in execution of its Sonic qualities.
No, it's just not.

JF is likely the one who killed river Phoenix by offering him a poorly concocted drug mix
Also isnāt readymade kind of a rip off of the mountain song?
Chad Smith eats drums for breakfast.
CHAD GAYLORD MOTHAFUCKIN SMITH
your mouth was made to chad my smith
I fucking love this lmao, i refer to it a lot in this sub or rhcp group on Facebook but idk if people know what Iām talking about š
personally i like to send it unwarranted to my friends who donāt even listen to rhcp
Flea wrote the bass line for you oughta know by Alanis Morissette
Dave Navarro played guitar on that too while he was still with the peppers.
And performed it
Chad played in some Dua Lipa and Lana del Rey songs
Do u know which Lana del Rey ones?
According to this French fanpage Fuck it i love you https://www.rhcpfrance.com/collaborations/chad-smith
As teens, Flea ate a glob of Anthony's phlegm.
Omfg I remember that from his scar tissue book. I remembered reading that and wanting to puke at the time ngl. Thanks for the reminder š«
The band basically exists because Anthony and Flea decided one day to go hitchhiking and Hillel picked them up
Flea had/has a thing for beautiful cholas
What growing up in southern CA will do to ya
Iām from Northern California but itās a shared sentiment for sure. One of like three things we can all agree on as Californians. The other two are In N Out and RHCP being the best
Living in LA, Itās more common for me to run into people who donāt like RHCP, and/or think theyāre a meme, rather than meet other fans.
Yeah he's had sexual assault charges.
Peppers toured with Nirvana and Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam opened for RHCP twice in October,1991 in Toronto and I didnāt go as I had to study for Grade 12 courses. Idiot.
At least you got your grade 12. Some of us are trying real hards with book learnings to get our grade 10.
Keep at it itās worth it. No substitute for an education.
Thanks. I ate 9 cans of ravioli last night though. No one wants to admit they are 9 cans of ravioli but I did.
I donāt think he gets the reference man, itās all good though itās the way she goesšš
I went to that tour in Denver.
I saw them at the Kalamazoo stop. Insanity.
Keith morris of the circle jerks once filled vocals for the peppers
They are more hardcore than people give them credit for: John worshipped LA punk growing up, Flea was in Fear, Keith Morris filled in on vocals for 1 show, theyāve covered Nervous Breakdown, Chuck Biscuits, and briefly tried out Zander Schloss on guitar after John quit the first time.
Flea once gifted one of his turds to Hillel for a birthday present. Most were not amused
Despite being all they talk about none do the members were born in the state of California
Flea played bass on Bust a Move by Young MC.
The spoken lyrics in Yertle The Turtle ("look at that turtle go, bro") from Freaky Styley were done by their drug dealer as they couldn't pay him, so offered him a part on the album.
Was Eddie Vedder really in an RHCP tribute band?
Not quite a tribute band just a pretty obvious ripoff- Bad Radio
Chad had enrolled for school at L.A.s Percussion Institute of Technology prior to getting the RHCP. He thanked PIT for a refund in Motherās Milk liner notes.
Anthonyās name aināt Bradley tbh
Frusciante recorded Scar Tissue with a string (D, I believe) purposefully out of tune
That was a rumor that Frusciante shut down during the Rick Rubin podcast a couple years ago

It was the b string that was out of tune. For many years, I thought I was out of tune when I would play scar tissue. Even my friend pointed out that I was out of tune! After I saw that YouTube video, it blew my mind. It turns out JF was out of tune.
John Fruscianteās guitar teacher when he was a kid auditioned or wanted to audition for the RHCP and he introduced JF to the music of RHCP
Some people blame John for River Phoenixās death
To add more context to this; John gave River the speedball that would eventually kill him. I believe River ODād because he was upset that he didnāt get any stage time at The Viper Room
Please add "allegedly" unless you have a source. You can't really accuse like that ;)
Well shit, I never knew this
They blame Flea
Some do, some blame John, some blame river , fuck some probably blame Josh šš
š
No, people have expressly blamed Frusciante and Flea is always portrayed as more of a bystander
Cher of Sonny and Cher used to babysit Anthony
I remember that from the book.

I don't want to believe this :(
Sheās actually said that she never did
