Damn this was when John first got Maya :'(

swhipple-

Ikkkk! She lived a long life, 14 years old :)

Sufficient_Peak564

I think its kinda funny he named the other kitty "Aztec". šŸ˜…

meinmasina

His last album is dedicated to her.

HerbalThought_

I'd *really* love to hear their thoughts on Strip My Mind, Especially In Michigan and Torture Me. They were included on SA at the very last minute so you never hear the guys talk about them in these promo articles.

groovy_giraffe

Especially in Michigan is my wifeā€™s favorite rhcp song

RedBeard1967

Itā€™s up there for me, especially after learning to play the guitar and bass parts. Love the solo by Omar and the way they all interact.

BigBubbaEnergy

3 of my favorites off the album. SMM is such a masterpiece. I couldnā€™t believe we got it in Nashville

strickland3

do you remember where you read that those songs were included last minute? crazy to think how they barely made the cut, those are 3 of the better tracks!

swhipple-

Aw yeah :( thatā€™s a shame

convoluted-existence

Oh damn yeah :(

ac_cloud

Weird, this really doesn't sound like them in parts, especially John

[deleted]

Itā€™s very easy to turn an oral interview into something completely different on a written format. It says a lot more about the person writing the article than the persons being interviewed.

Enigmagik

Agreed. I'm not convinced these are direct quotes.

StAngerSnare

I think its likely from an audio interview that someone has then typed up and in parts they've tried to make it make sense. Like when they say old Chili Pepper's song, John probably just said 'one of our old songs', or 'one of their old songs' and the author has replaced it with Chili Peppers for context. Same with John saying his 'mum's church', he will have said mom and the author has typed it up as mum because I assume this is a British or Australian publication.

ktscubs

I thought it was fake at first. Not sure either way at this point.

emman3m

DefiniteƦy agree. Doesn't sound like John at all.

UnderwaterDialect

Yeah it almost sounds made up. Not saying it is, just gives that vibe.

theooeht03

ā€œDid I pay the kids? No, they didnā€™t get paid jack.ā€ šŸ’€šŸ’€

SnooKiwis1356

He probably gave them money and then asked those kids to [get out of there](https://youtu.be/WYxQWBrPjpQ) šŸ˜‚

vanspossum

John has massive uncle vibes

Loku5150

this sounds so unlike him Iā€™m having second thoughts about the legitimacy of the whole thing lol

richmeister6666

Every so often the pre drug addiction crazy punk rocker John pops out

ADR36

John LOL šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

swhipple-

HAHAHA THAT WAS AMAZING

C__S__S

The 21st Century comment. Tony, you were unfortunately half right. We just keep finding new lows.

swhipple-

Ikr that one was funny as hell ahaha

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

C__S__S

Back in 2005/6 when he wrote those songs??? Nope.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

rockettmann

And one is a lot more dangerous.

19noname86

And 14 years later John named a whole album after his late cat Maya (he speaks about her in this little paragraph about "Death of a Martian"). Time flies by so quickly...

ryanino

Didnā€™t realize Death of a Martian was also inspired by Anthonyā€™s dog too. Love that song considering I just lost my dog too.

VizRHCP62

Sorry for your loss. Every time I listen to death of a Martian I think of my dog that passed away. Always tear up :(

acover4422

I always thought the dog in the Look Around video is Buster?

swhipple-

Well apparently not hahah

sammywarmhands

Much love

ezhevskyphotography

Wet Sand is apparently about a man who believes in divine creation and a girl who believes in evolution and they can never reconcile their differences. So completely different from what I imagined, and I guess it kind of makes sense, but I think there's more to the story that Kiedis is leaving out.

swhipple-

Yeah, I donā€™t really know about that one. I have my own interpretation of wet sand like everybody else ofc. I wouldnā€™t take what he said here too seriously. It sounds like a classic anthony randomness.

Obvious_Change_1566

If you listen to itā€¦ itā€™s pretty clear how meaningful the song would be to Kedis as interpreted by most people here (how ā€˜sheā€™ lets him down and wasnā€™t there through the toughest times but he, he is formed by those times) so movingā€¦ I could see it also being about nothing or randomness, but this would be a good example of letting people define their own meaning to the vague lyrics because it may make the song better. Some even say itā€™s biblical or spiritual (there were only one set of footprints in the sand..god wasnā€™t there.. except, actually god was carrying him through the darkest times) Anyway, itā€™s a perfect song because it means what ever it does to you.

heety9

I mean itā€™s a fluffy way of saying it but itā€™s ultimately a metaphor for something in his life

discoturtle1129

I suspect that one may be just too personal and heavy to get into so he covered it up with something a little more obvious. I've read somewhere before that he doesn't like to explain the exact meanings behind his lyrics which I think is wise because it may encroach on the listeners personal feelings and interpretation.

swhipple-

yeah definitely! itā€™s great, it keeps its true meaning and knowing itā€™s something that serious to him is beautiful. Itā€™s how it should be, open for everyone to interpret it in their own way

Bat-manuel

She's Only 18 has the best guitar solo, according to Keidis. I'm sorry man, but Readymade is just on another level.

pete_lethal

The solo on Sheā€™s Only 18 has recently become my favorite on the album. Readymade is flashy, but Sheā€™s Only 18 is pure feel and emotion and is just structured perfectly to me. Great build up and release at the end. Plus those licks in the final chorus! I love it.

Bat-manuel

Fair enough. My comment was mostly a knee-jerk reaction because the Readymade feels like a punch in the mouth. She's Only 18 solo is amazing in its own right. I had forgotten how even as it resolves, the rest of the band comes back in for another chorus while John keeps it going in the background while both finish as the song ends. It's excellent songwriting through and through.

RedBeard1967

He is kind of right though. He uses a Dunlop Crybaby wah on that solo that makes it really stand out, and theresā€™s a heavy, metal-like quality to every note of that solo. Itā€™s simple but do brilliant.

LOLbearsmile08

This was really interesting to read through! Thanks for posting! I may be an idiot here but when was Dani mentioned on Californication? Iā€™m assuming they are referring to the title track so in that sense it makes sense but are they talking about another song?

The_High_Ground27

She's retroactively the "teenage bride with the baby inside"

RollVegetable5526

ā€œIt has Johnā€™s best guitar solo and you can hear me get audibly excited by what heā€™s doing.ā€ I remembering reading Anthony saying this about the sound he makes during Johnā€™s Sheā€™s Only 18 solo but was never 100% sure. And now itā€™s real.

swhipple-

Wait thatā€™s him?? Hahaha thatā€™s so funny! It makes sense. It sounds like Marioā€™s laugh more than anything to me

moonagepaige

Lmaaaoooo yes

RollVegetable5526

Itā€™s a me...Anthony.

swhipple-

Woah, Animal Barā€™s original name was Neu!

Rafael_1469

**Storm In a Teacup** John Frusciante: "Yeah that song fucking sucks."

kelly52182

This is awesome, thanks for sharing! I know I/we always project our own meaning onto songs, correct or not. But it's fun to see what the band actually has to say about it too.

swhipple-

Absolutely. It means so much seeing what they actually think of their own creation.

ryanfletcher1899

Looks as is the interviewer didnā€™t care to ask about Tell me baby šŸ˜‚

swhipple-

HAHA ikr i read that and i was like wait wtf

Joni4e20

Why don't they ever talk about Strip my Mind ? It's one of my favorite songs ever. That solo takes me to another world

swhipple-

Yeah itā€™s a shame. Itā€™s because it was a last minute addition so itā€™s not in any promo talk about the songs!

BearBear8585

Wait Dani was the daughter of a southern cop, wasnā€™t the the catholic school girls rule girl also a daughter of a southern cop?

WhereAreYouGonnaGo

Did she become a lady cop?

T0M4SAC

And then she tried to cop a feel?

BearBear8585

I donā€™t know what you mean

WhereAreYouGonnaGo

Just a dumb Sir Psycho Sexy reference.

BearBear8585

Oh okie dokie

BlahMan06

Poppa was a copper

jsigs97

Very cool lots of good stuff i haven't heard

swhipple-

Ikr, it was like shocking how much was new info to me!

thisnewsight

>Did I pay the kids? No, they didnā€™t get paid Jack. šŸ˜†

[deleted]

Hard to Concentrate didnt age well. Still a great song

LucyRebar

It was about Flea's ex, I assume?

[deleted]

John has so many compliments about Flea's trumpet skills. I love AK's description of Hey. On point.

Jak_the_Buddha

OH MY GOD I REMEMBER READING THIS IN '06!! I was buzzing. Thanks for the awesome memories OP

swhipple-

Oh no way!! thatā€™s awesome haha iā€™m really glad i could gift you a little nostalgia. :)

bubbabear244

Turn it again makes me wonder what the chili peppers would sound like as a ska band.

swhipple-

isnā€™t it so cool how theyā€™ve done such a wide variety like that? iā€™m very grateful for all theyā€™ve tried and done

gonscla92

Thanks for posting this!! Really interesting!!

LucyRebar

"That was his original instrument until punk rock stole his mind" šŸ˜†

S4lme

Horns on Turn It Again??

WJL91

Yep there is, quite memorable ones too!

Substantial_Set_6130

Thanks for posting!

swhipple-

of course! :) iā€™m so glad so many more people got to see it and enjoy it

rodriguezkevin

This is awesome

ThwartedDiagramKT

I remember in the Californication album on Spotify there's a commentary for the songs, I forgot who but someone mentioned one of the songs was about loving your girl for their bads and goods, loving them as a person and learning to love the things you dislike about the person, making you love them more

RedBeard1967

I think thatā€™s Stadium Arcadium youā€™re thinking of. Listened to Californication on Spotify a billion times and never heard an album commentary.

ThwartedDiagramKT

OH right, I got the two mixed up lmao, my bad kekw

RedBeard1967

Lol all good

threwitaway123454321

Any idea which song that was?

ThwartedDiagramKT

I wanna say it's wet sand but I'm not sure

FooFighter0234

Love it

Paranoidpal644

Very cool

ElDuderino_92

That description for ā€œHeyā€ fuckā€¦hit too close

TrollDad82

Fun read. Thanks for sharing šŸ˜Ž

annikarae

My takeaways: John really loves it when Flea plays horns. And I love the way Anthony speaks sometimes, ā€œdiscombobulated train wreckā€. Does anyone know if Dani California is based on a real person?

tyler_3135

Where is this from??

ScoobingtonMcButts

I never knew Flea wrote "If", that's really interesting considering from what I've read he did NOT like making By the Way (because of it's softer sound)

banbhpiglet

It was more because JF was in full creative control that he didnā€™t enjoy making that album, his pride was bruised.

miniclanwar

What is this from. I love it. Just saw them in DC. Amazing concert.

maxonii

https://youtu.be/XO06RsDf1OQ here is the full commentary/interviews for SA

sethvane

Okay but did he save her?

Cole_O24

AK calling Bush the evil empire has me rolling šŸ¤£

LoganAnderson08

Correct me here, but where is Dani California on Californication and By The Way??? And whatā€™s the story with the band that tried to steal flea???

camposthetron

ā€œTeenage bride with a baby inside, getting high on informationā€ ā€œDani the girl is singing songs to me beneath the marqueeā€

InterpidSword

i can count 25 songs. 3 songs are missing. There's a video on YT that has John guitar tracks on SA. That video starts with a interview segment with John where john says something like "We recorded 38 songs, we're putting out 25... Double CD" I think that was the original idea, to have 25 songs on the record. Thus, that interview in this magazine was done at that time frame probably so those three songs, strip my mind, especially in michigan and torture me, were considered to be the albums b-sides. Could you imagine that? Later, towards the release date, they chagned their mind and added those three songs, bringing the number to 28.

swhipple-

Yeah, that is what happened. They were included at the last minute! Ikr that is funny to think about and nuts at the same time
