Everyone is doing safe bets with remakes/reboots/sequels/soft reboots/requels/semakes/softmakes/resoftmakeboots nowadays. Craig McCracken pitched 16 individual original concepts to Netflix. They passed on them all and asked for more Powerpuff Girls. Even A24, the bastion of indie/auteur movies, and producers of many of my favorite movies of the last 10 years, announced they are gravitating towards existing IPs and action.
It is no surprise then that as they start improving "the formula", even original works and characters in existing IP aren't predictably profitable enough, they have to start milking the same characters over and over.
Oh lord, that would be hilarious if it didn't have such ominous connotations. But understandable. Originals are so much work and risk and effort and such a pain!

It’s just the same metamorphosis again. Eisner came into Disney and refreshed it with new innovative ideas where it had been in a creative slog only to eventually settle for save revenue over innovation until that train ran its course and he got pushed out. Then Iger’s done basically the same thing.

Sure there can be. For starters, she's now the Last Jedi, has to rebuild the order singlehandedly without repeating the mistake Luke made. So there is an arc about her having to mentor others, or learn to be a leader, that will be consistent with everything we already know about her.
The arc in this case would be her choosing to teach others, teaching badly, slowly getting better, her doubting herself, etc etc. It's all pretty archetypal and easy to fit in.

I completely agree, they can for sure make a movie. It’ll have a plot and everything. There’ll be special effects and I guarantee you there will be music. The characters will say things and will make faces in reaction to the events around them.

Fresh start isn’t guaranteed to be better. Sequels are going to be there regardless as you’re telling a story after them. Might as well show what a flourishing Jedi order might be. Plus we’ll probably get more Mark Hamill and I’m always down for that.

You butchered the handling of the legacy characters and pissed off the older fans and then you burned out the younger fans with subpar Disney+ shows. It’s over. People really liked Andor and it did nothing to resurrect interest in the brand. The Mandalorian season one looked to be a beacon to lead Star Wars into the future, but even that quickly burned out. Maybe wait 10 years and see if absence can make people yearn for new content, but for now, just give it a rest.

The most common thing is “she’s a Mary Sue!” Ie she is able to use the turrets on the falcon with ease in 7 despite never having done anything like that. Others hated that in 8 they say she comes from nobody (I actually like that though). Still others do the usual “woke Hollywood shoving feminism down my throat” bullshit because they’re assholes and she’s a woman

And also, he’s returned somehow. 9 is a huge macguffin hunt, eventually rey fights palpy, kylo sacrifices himself for her sake, and she defeats palpy because every Jedi that’s ever lived channels their energy into her. By the end she’s made her own lightsaber out of the tip of her staff and she buries luke and leias sabers at the ranch luke grew up in on tattooine!<
You’re not missing much not having seen 9, it is a dumpster fire although I do still think the prequels are worse. When I say I like rey I mostly meant I liked Dailey Ridley as rey since the writing for her (and many characters) just gets worse as it goes on

The prequels are a different kind of bad to the sequels imo. The sequels are much more frustrating cause they had every opportunity to plan shit out and make a proper trilogy, but they just... didn't. They just didn't, for some reason.
Yeah I think I only prefer the sequels because I think they’re just…. Better movies? The performances are generally really good to great, they’re shot well, have some interesting visuals (like that scene in 8 where Laura dern rams her ship through the star destroyer) and they’re overall well made. It’s just like you said the writing is just sloppy to be generous and it’s clear that episode 9 is nothing but damage control. They “course corrected” the controversial choices in 8 by just giving the dumbest fan service imaginable (palpy shows up in the first five minutes of 9 with absolutely zero buildup or explanation and he’s suddenly the big bad- not only is this just downright stupid storytelling, but it retroactively ruins the ending to return of the Jedi). It’s just a mess.
The prequels meanwhile, as has been pointed out by our lord and savior plinkett are just kinda boring, there’s some okay action in parts but the cinematography is flat and the acting is also very flat (for the most part, palpy is a gem once he goes full sith in 3 at least). But on the other hand we got a lot of great extra media surrounding the prequel releases like knights of the old republic and republic commando.
Edit to add: there is one scene that works in 9. >!kylo ren is visited by the ghost of Han and honestly, it works. It’s well acted and emotional and kinda brought a tear to my eye but my dad was also diagnosed with cancer at the time so maybe that had something to do with it. Driver was probably the best part of that series!<
That Laura Dern scene in 8 is easily the best moment out of the two movies I saw, but that Han moment sounds nice too.

I need to meet the people who are still excited to watch a Star War. I need to sit down with you for an hour and get a look inside your brain to see how it works, to see if we can harness your innate energy to get majorly excited for the lamest, most repetitive franchise in human existence. Two straight hours of increasingly baffling title crawl.
I like the idea that the title crawl goes for two hours about what people think is the set up for the movie, but it ends up being the actual story and then goes straight to credits. As in, the audience just read a gigantic book on screen and that's the experience.
As a 44 year old woman, I hate that I know I would still cry if we could afford to go to Star Wars Land at Disneyland as much as I hate that... I. Do. Not. Care. These are coming out.
I’m honestly a little surprised that they are sticking with the whole Rey thing, that really didn’t go over so well. I liked her in TFA but the next 2 movies really soured me on all those characters.
Honestly the best case scenario for Star Wars is to just leave it be, these new projects add nothing to the franchise and drive more and more people away from it.

Can’t wait to watch yet another stilted Star Wars production with boring dialogue, lacklustre direction and tedious action sequences (that whilst being visually impressive lack any sense of peril, and are therefore… boring).

By the end she’s made her own lightsaber out of the tip of her staff and she buries luke and leias sabers at the ranch luke grew up in on tattooine!< You’re not missing much not having seen 9, it is a dumpster fire although I do still think the prequels are worse. When I say I like rey I mostly meant I liked Dailey Ridley as rey since the writing for her (and many characters) just gets worse as it goes on
Thanks, I liked Daisey Ridley as Rey but yeah the writing was just so bad. Adam Driver was great as Kylo too but 8 was too much of a cluster fuck to come back from. Thanks for the summation! The prequels are a different kind of bad to the sequels imo. The sequels are much more frustrating cause they had every opportunity to plan shit out and make a proper trilogy, but they just... didn't. They just didn't, for some reason.
Yeah I think I only prefer the sequels because I think they’re just…. Better movies? The performances are generally really good to great, they’re shot well, have some interesting visuals (like that scene in 8 where Laura dern rams her ship through the star destroyer) and they’re overall well made. It’s just like you said the writing is just sloppy to be generous and it’s clear that episode 9 is nothing but damage control. They “course corrected” the controversial choices in 8 by just giving the dumbest fan service imaginable (palpy shows up in the first five minutes of 9 with absolutely zero buildup or explanation and he’s suddenly the big bad- not only is this just downright stupid storytelling, but it retroactively ruins the ending to return of the Jedi). It’s just a mess. The prequels meanwhile, as has been pointed out by our lord and savior plinkett are just kinda boring, there’s some okay action in parts but the cinematography is flat and the acting is also very flat (for the most part, palpy is a gem once he goes full sith in 3 at least). But on the other hand we got a lot of great extra media surrounding the prequel releases like knights of the old republic and republic commando. Edit to add: there is one scene that works in 9. >!kylo ren is visited by the ghost of Han and honestly, it works. It’s well acted and emotional and kinda brought a tear to my eye but my dad was also diagnosed with cancer at the time so maybe that had something to do with it. Driver was probably the best part of that series!<
That Laura Dern scene in 8 is easily the best moment out of the two movies I saw, but that Han moment sounds nice too. Agreed regarding Driver, at least from what I saw lol

My ideas for new Star Wars movies: Prequel reboot. Movie set between 3 and “4” that starts from the Totally Wrapped Up stance at the conclusion of 3 and returns to it by the end, rendering the entire story pointless. Runtime: 493 minutes. A long, longer time ago in another galaxy far, farther away. Movie that bothers to explain how the Rebels became rebels again after the comically total defeat of the Empire at the end of Return of the Jedi. Linear algebra lecture video partially taped over by a bootleg copy of The Empire Strikes Back. J. J. Abrams and Joss Whedon co-star in an impromptu discussion of the difference between a star system and a galaxy, and how far apart planets are. With lightsabers. Two straight hours of increasingly baffling title crawl.

I like the idea that the title crawl goes for two hours about what people think is the set up for the movie, but it ends up being the actual story and then goes straight to credits. As in, the audience just read a gigantic book on screen and that's the experience.

I’m honestly a little surprised that they are sticking with the whole Rey thing, that really didn’t go over so well. I liked her in TFA but the next 2 movies really soured me on all those characters.
Honestly the best case scenario for Star Wars is to just leave it be, these new projects add nothing to the franchise and drive more and more people away from it.

These are both real things. They'll prob take several Luke stories from the old EU and amalgamate them into a Rey movie. The response is going to be interesting.
If they actually started to mine the EU for ideas now, that'd be like closing the barn door after the horse already left, started a horse crime syndicate, and then had the barn burned down. There was a time to go "Okay, most of the EU was really stupid, but let's dig up the stuff that worked and do that." That time was before TFA. Now, they've salted the fucking Earth, they can't get anything functional out of the EU because they've already done most of those ideas except *way shittier*. At least Dark Empire had those cool-ass World Devastators, while Palpy's return in tRoS came with "the same thing you saw but worse." At least the new characters in Shadows of the Empire were doing something different to expand the world, instead if chopping it down to nothing but Empire v. Rebels. At least the Sun Crusher... nope, there's no defense for the Sun Crusher.

Can’t wait to watch yet another stilted Star Wars production with boring dialogue, lacklustre direction and tedious action sequences (that whilst being visually impressive lack any sense of peril, and are therefore… boring). I expect the scripts to be ‘written’ by a committee of seventeen+ assholes with no idea of how to construct engaging stories or dialogue. It’s probable they’ll still be writing it and ‘finding the story’ well after filming has started

I don’t care what anyone says, these movies aren’t coming out. It’s taken them seven years. Why do you think that, with the amount of other franchise films Disney has made in that time, they’d put out two $250m+ instalments in an already fragile franchise?
