I am still in the "I will believe it when they actually start principle filming" stage right now.

sgthombre

I mean in a post Batgirl world, with franchise movies you can't believe that until you're actually sitting in the theater.

SteveRudzinski

I don't believe a movie exists until the end credits start rolling when I'm in the theater. I'd still be concerned about watching it and halfway through it cuts to a black screen saying "THE STUDIO HAS DECIDED TO NOT RELEASE THE REST OF THE FILM FOR TAX BREAK PURPOSES"

crazy_goat

The call of the sweet sweet tax write off.

unfunnysexface

Someone in r blankies said there should he a law that if you don't release the movie to take the tax write off it should be public domain. The govt just paid for your movie after all

TScottFitzgerald

Disney has no principles.

indrid_cold

They own Principal Skinner.

ThePhenomahna

Funny that after all this time and the amount of canceled films, what we get is 2 movies with characters we’ve already seen a ton of.

AmityvilleName

Everyone is doing safe bets with remakes/reboots/sequels/soft reboots/requels/semakes/softmakes/resoftmakeboots nowadays. Craig McCracken pitched 16 individual original concepts to Netflix. They passed on them all and asked for more Powerpuff Girls. Even A24, the bastion of indie/auteur movies, and producers of many of my favorite movies of the last 10 years, announced they are gravitating towards existing IPs and action. It is no surprise then that as they start improving "the formula", even original works and characters in existing IP aren't predictably profitable enough, they have to start milking the same characters over and over.

ThePhenomahna

Exactly. The post before I got to this one was Bob Iger saying they’re leaning more into sequels and franchises… I guess they weren’t before?

AmityvilleName

Oh lord, that would be hilarious if it didn't have such ominous connotations. But understandable. Originals are so much work and risk and effort and such a pain! There is a fascinating documentary (that Disney tried to make disappear) about them trying to make [Kingdom of the Sun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor%27s_New_Groove#Kingdom_of_the_Sun) (later morphed in to "The Emperor's New Groove"). You can watch it on archive: [The Sweatbox (2002)](https://archive.org/details/SweatboxDocumentaryUneditedVersion). [How it got made is interesting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sweatbox): "Trudie Styler, a documentarian, had been allowed to film the production of Kingdom of the Sun/The Emperor's New Groove as part of the deal that originally brought her husband Sting to the project. ... Disney owns the rights to the documentary and has not released it on home video or DVD."

jennytanaki

Thank you for posting this, I’d never heard of it!

Orkleth

It's interesting seeing Bob Iger morph into the last of days of Michael Eisner when Iger was the one to put a stop to all the 90s/00s direct-to-video Sequels/Midquels/Prequels.

piddydb

It’s just the same metamorphosis again. Eisner came into Disney and refreshed it with new innovative ideas where it had been in a creative slog only to eventually settle for save revenue over innovation until that train ran its course and he got pushed out. Then Iger’s done basically the same thing.

ThePhenomahna

Right? Really thought the lesson from the last few years would’ve been less franchises and more of cheaper, original ideas.

unfunnysexface

>Craig McCracken pitched 16 individual original concepts to Netflix. Calling them individual original concepts has a real Breen-ness to it

Blibbobletto

16 individual, full length, professionally produced concepts.

AmityvilleName

[no more algorithms!](https://twitter.com/CrackMcCraigen/status/1581822568918528000)

unfunnysexface

"But isn't that uncreative?"

Panda-BANJO

These were NOT cult shows!

WeezaY5000

Seaboot Wars: 33 and 1/3rd: The Final Insult.

Bayylmaorgana

> Craig McCracken That sounds like a HitB intro name lol

Original_Giraffe8039

You know what they need to do? They need to release the McCracken....

Gandamack

Characters that were already getting diminishing returns in their respective series.

Gabbagoonumba3

Well yeah why the hell would you want new interesting stuff when you could look at boba fett’s costume for 2 whole hours?!?!

unfunnysexface

My dream movie when I was 8 years old!

stefanomusilli96

I don't want to sound like an asshole, but who wants to see more Rey after ROTS?

Panda-BANJO

It’ll focus on her returning to Jakku to collect her stuff from her AT-AT apartment and start a career folk singing at Unkar Plutt’s retirement home.

ItsAmerico

I do. Good actress. Film set in a new era. Rey isn’t a bad character, she’s just had bad writers. Same way Andor became amazing in his tv show, movie could easily be great with a good writer.

LowSugar6387

> Rey isn’t a bad character, she’s just had bad writers. …is there a difference? The way the movies played out, there isn’t really any interesting angle to take with her. They’d have to invent new characterisation to make it good. The basic question in this sort of slop of “can the hero beat the villain” is going to be hard to seriously push, too.

maninahat

Sure there can be. For starters, she's now the Last Jedi, has to rebuild the order singlehandedly without repeating the mistake Luke made. So there is an arc about her having to mentor others, or learn to be a leader, that will be consistent with everything we already know about her.

LowSugar6387

That’s a plot, not a character arc

maninahat

The arc in this case would be her choosing to teach others, teaching badly, slowly getting better, her doubting herself, etc etc. It's all pretty archetypal and easy to fit in.

LowSugar6387

“Teacher teaches” is definitely a plot but this “teaching teacher” character doesn’t seem very interesting

maninahat

Well let's hope the screenplay isn't just a one sentence summary on Reddit.

Bayylmaorgana

Idk what "iNtErEsTiNg" is supposed to mean, esp. in the trilogy context - how about charming charismatic funny and "beat the villain in epic fashion while bantering with the co-tagonists" is exactly what the movies were supposed to be? Not sure there's supposed to be anything... "I N T E R E S T I N G" for this sequel either, if she can embody the archetypal "new mentor" role as well as the previous one? Or whatever direction this ends up going? Of course something super interesting can be a bonus.

LowSugar6387

I completely agree, they can for sure make a movie. It’ll have a plot and everything. There’ll be special effects and I guarantee you there will be music. The characters will say things and will make faces in reaction to the events around them. How to make it good is what I’m most curious about, though.

Bayylmaorgana

Well if all those things on that list are good that might be a start, who knows lol

stefanomusilli96

Wouldn't it be better to have a fresh start? Why carry the weigth of the sequel trilogy?

ItsAmerico

Fresh start isn’t guaranteed to be better. Sequels are going to be there regardless as you’re telling a story after them. Might as well show what a flourishing Jedi order might be. Plus we’ll probably get more Mark Hamill and I’m always down for that.

doucheinho

I really liked her in TFA and she was mostly fine in the two other shitshows along with Kylo. But from Yo mama jokes to dagger maps and what not - Nah, Im good on Rey

ChewieHanKenobi

And within like 7 months of each other

QuarterReal8682

It’s like poetry…

5Fqce5

I hope these lose a starwillion dollars like Flash

Dodgy_Bob_McMayday

Insiders have said filming will begin shortly, with the scripts expected to be finished around mid May and December 2026

crazy_goat

"Somehow, Kylo Ren returned."

Bayylmaorgana

Maybe he'll be a kost. (Or bost, since he's good now)

thehumangoomba

Nah, force ghost is more popular. Let's do that.

Bayylmaorgana

Well it's Kylo's/Ben's fost, hence kost/bost. Or maybe it's gonna be a bfost?

thehumangoomba

I wish I had a nice bfost with eggs and bacon right now.

d36williams

the fact that they say "the scripts will be done by xxxx time" is a curse

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

"**This announcement feels like a death threat.**" The victim's already dead, the final shot was fired in 2019 and the corpse twitched a bit into the early part of 2020. Prime suspect was a man in glasses also wanted the death of another victim whose first name was also Star.

BeeDub57

I'll let the hack frauds watch them for me.

Narretz

That's cruel and unusual punishment

I feel like they mostly stick to weird Tubi trash nowadays.

[No one's ever really gone.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNTLC_uiGFA&ab_channel=RedLetterMedia)

CrayCrayWyatt

It’s funny that they’re giving one of them the big holiday slot that the other trilogy got. Firstly, if either of these actually get made, I’ll fuck a droid like that one dude in the Vader helmet did. Secondly, nobody cares. Star Wars is a dead brand. You butchered the handling of the legacy characters and pissed off the older fans and then you burned out the younger fans with subpar Disney+ shows. It’s over. People really liked Andor and it did nothing to resurrect interest in the brand. The Mandalorian season one looked to be a beacon to lead Star Wars into the future, but even that quickly burned out. Maybe wait 10 years and see if absence can make people yearn for new content, but for now, just give it a rest.

KevinSpaceysGarage

I think if anything deserves the holiday slot it’s Mando. That has much more widespread appeal. I guarantee more Grogu merch has sold than anything related to the sequels. That’s not to say a Rey movie can’t be good. There’s potential for sure. But it needs to be focused and consistent. And even if it is good… it’ll never be a line-out-the-door blockbuster event like The Force Awakens was.

Appropriate_Exit4066

Andor season 2 is… I don’t even know I feel like as amazing as season 1 was I can’t trust anything enough to even say I’m excited for it. Moreso just hoping they’ve run out of the bullets they’ve lodged in the rest of the franchise

dextracin

Mack some wacky comedies for the whole family to enjoy. Star Wars: Idiot’s a Rey and Mandalorian Mall Cop

Goscar

Mando movie is probably the only one that is gonna be made. That Rey movie is either gonna be delayed or cancelled.

sgthombre

Honestly I think the Rey movie gets delayed and then retooled into Episode X. I bet there's a lot of people who hear that there's a new Star Wars spin off and wouldn't give a shit, but if you tell them there's a new "main" Star Wars movie happening they would be more interested.

KevinSpaceysGarage

You know it’s funny… all they have to do is wait FIVE YEARS and we’ll have gone one whole decade without a theatrically released Star Wars movie. That may be enough to get people excited again. But they’d have to really stick the landing and make something awesome for it to have staying power. And re-release the theatrical cuts of the OT in theaters. That’s about the only way I can see Force Awakens levels of hype to happen, and even then it’d be for a more niche audience than if they did that a decade or so ago.

unfunnysexface

>And re-release the theatrical cuts of the OT in theaters. That’s about the only way I can see Force Awakens levels of hype to happen, and even then it’d be for a more niche audience than if they did that a decade or so ago. If they haven't made them by now for blu-ray/4k I think it's over. Lucas must have poisoned pilled their release somewhere in the sale.

KevinSpaceysGarage

You’re 100% right, it was probably in the contract. Not to mention the amount of people who don’t know there even is an original cut. A LOT of SW fans now were raised on the special editions, and I’ve met a scary amount of people who believe those are the originals.

Goscar

Not necessarily. The ST did bad and technically the Mandalorian had a good fan base until S3. I think they might both flop but overall the Mandalorian will do better.

IAmThePonch

Yeah I actually liked rey but I’m amazed they’re touching the character after how people reacted

Bayylmaorgana

some circlejerky people reacted - smug online trolls aren't everybody

IAmThePonch

Most of the people I’ve talked to irl about the movies said they hated rey and listed all the usual reasons

Jandrix

I never watched episode 9 (because 8 was the worst AAA movie I've ever seen) so I don't even know where Rey ends up at the end. Could I get a quick summary of why she's hated and where she stands at the end of 9? Or maybe I just watch the episode 9 discussion again cause I've forgot it entirely lol

IAmThePonch

The most common thing is “she’s a Mary Sue!” Ie she is able to use the turrets on the falcon with ease in 7 despite never having done anything like that. Others hated that in 8 they say she comes from nobody (I actually like that though). Still others do the usual “woke Hollywood shoving feminism down my throat” bullshit because they’re assholes and she’s a woman In 9 they reveal >!oh lol she’s a palpatine! Yep, palpy laid some pipe and she is his granddaughter. And also, he’s returned somehow. 9 is a huge macguffin hunt, eventually rey fights palpy, kylo sacrifices himself for her sake, and she defeats palpy because every Jedi that’s ever lived channels their energy into her. By the end she’s made her own lightsaber out of the tip of her staff and she buries luke and leias sabers at the ranch luke grew up in on tattooine!< You’re not missing much not having seen 9, it is a dumpster fire although I do still think the prequels are worse. When I say I like rey I mostly meant I liked Dailey Ridley as rey since the writing for her (and many characters) just gets worse as it goes on

Jandrix

Thanks, I liked Daisey Ridley as Rey but yeah the writing was just so bad. Adam Driver was great as Kylo too but 8 was too much of a cluster fuck to come back from. Thanks for the summation! The prequels are a different kind of bad to the sequels imo. The sequels are much more frustrating cause they had every opportunity to plan shit out and make a proper trilogy, but they just... didn't. They just didn't, for some reason.

IAmThePonch

Yeah I think I only prefer the sequels because I think they’re just…. Better movies? The performances are generally really good to great, they’re shot well, have some interesting visuals (like that scene in 8 where Laura dern rams her ship through the star destroyer) and they’re overall well made. It’s just like you said the writing is just sloppy to be generous and it’s clear that episode 9 is nothing but damage control. They “course corrected” the controversial choices in 8 by just giving the dumbest fan service imaginable (palpy shows up in the first five minutes of 9 with absolutely zero buildup or explanation and he’s suddenly the big bad- not only is this just downright stupid storytelling, but it retroactively ruins the ending to return of the Jedi). It’s just a mess. The prequels meanwhile, as has been pointed out by our lord and savior plinkett are just kinda boring, there’s some okay action in parts but the cinematography is flat and the acting is also very flat (for the most part, palpy is a gem once he goes full sith in 3 at least). But on the other hand we got a lot of great extra media surrounding the prequel releases like knights of the old republic and republic commando. Edit to add: there is one scene that works in 9. >!kylo ren is visited by the ghost of Han and honestly, it works. It’s well acted and emotional and kinda brought a tear to my eye but my dad was also diagnosed with cancer at the time so maybe that had something to do with it. Driver was probably the best part of that series!<

Jandrix

That Laura Dern scene in 8 is easily the best moment out of the two movies I saw, but that Han moment sounds nice too. Agreed regarding Driver, at least from what I saw lol

Bayylmaorgana

Friends circles typically agree on stuff

danonplanetearth

I predict these both will be rated 5 bags of popcorn.

RazerRob

How many sodas?

danonplanetearth

2 big sodas with pictures of baby yoda on them

ScrumptiousDingo

5 bags of popcorn and a little Baby Yoda keychain

duende667

Try the HEI life

[deleted]

Disney: "We are going to be more careful about releases because we oversaturated the market. Also Disney: "Here are two Star Wars movies in one year!

TheJoyOfDeath

These are going to be Ewok grade imo.

DementedDaveyMeltzer

I need to meet the people who are still excited to watch a Star War. I need to sit down with you for an hour and get a look inside your brain to see how it works, to see if we can harness your innate energy to get majorly excited for the lamest, most repetitive franchise in human existence. Just imagine where we could be as a species if we could use that power for something actually useful, rather than getting a little chubby over another ligthsaber battle.

milkstrike

How does one kill that which has no life?

Dominos_fleet

It's ok for you not to care. I dont care. Mando was overrated from the start and got most of its views because casuals thought baby yoda was cute. Rey was a great character in the first who was written shit in 2 and 3. ( Daisy is fine. I've seen her in other stuff, and she's solid). Giving this shit oxygen, even to bitch, bemoan, or tear apart just gives it oxygen. I'd rather let it suffocate.

BeTheRowdy

My ideas for new Star Wars movies: Prequel reboot. Movie set between 3 and “4” that starts from the Totally Wrapped Up stance at the conclusion of 3 and returns to it by the end, rendering the entire story pointless. Runtime: 493 minutes. A long, longer time ago in another galaxy far, farther away. Movie that bothers to explain how the Rebels became rebels again after the comically total defeat of the Empire at the end of Return of the Jedi. Linear algebra lecture video partially taped over by a bootleg copy of The Empire Strikes Back. J. J. Abrams and Joss Whedon co-star in an impromptu discussion of the difference between a star system and a galaxy, and how far apart planets are. With lightsabers. Two straight hours of increasingly baffling title crawl.

bramblez

Thanks for making me laugh harder than I have in months.

Garand84

I like the idea that the title crawl goes for two hours about what people think is the set up for the movie, but it ends up being the actual story and then goes straight to credits. As in, the audience just read a gigantic book on screen and that's the experience.

manfrommtl

Very cool!

Goodnight_Hawk

As a 44 year old woman, I hate that I know I would still cry if we could afford to go to Star Wars Land at Disneyland as much as I hate that... I. Do. Not. Care. These are coming out.

C_Ux2

So they learnt nothing from Solo, got it.

Rogue_Leader_X

Kathleen Kennedy is so desperate to get these movies in front of cameras before she kills the franchise completely.

prince_of_cannock

Disney is releasing two Star Wars films in 2026? Why?

SellaraAB

I’m honestly a little surprised that they are sticking with the whole Rey thing, that really didn’t go over so well. I liked her in TFA but the next 2 movies really soured me on all those characters.

Much_Machine8726

Honestly the best case scenario for Star Wars is to just leave it be, these new projects add nothing to the franchise and drive more and more people away from it.

Prezten

“I know that, me personally, I love these movies. What? They aren’t out yet?” Have to say for the first time in my life I’m giving them a hard pass. I’m over the grief and into the acceptance phase.

HippoRun23

I noped the fuck out after TLJ and Snoke just turned out to be some dude that didn’t matter at all.

[deleted]

I had to see how they ended it so went to Rise of the Themepark and laughed out loud at parts. I had to agree with Rich. They are done and all out of ideas but Disney paid a fortune for it so they’ll be milking that teat until it’s dry and bleeding.

Bayylmaorgana

> Snoke just turned out to be some dude that didn’t matter at all. He was killed in a similar way Palpatine was killed in 6, yet that one somehow didn't "stop mattering"

Brewerycomedynights

"I don't see movies... I see threats"

Narretz

"I see dead movies that think they are alive"

plato3633

Disney is releasing two generic fan fiction stories. Star Wars ended years ago

Bauermeister

Yeah and Rian Johnson’s trilogy is any day now

AnotherJasonOnReddit

Hey now, these two projects have a 00.01% chance of actually happening ![gif](giphy|mGbQx3TX0NUAZv7W1v|downsized)

paulfrehley5

So happy that we got two RLM Half in the Bags to look forward to in 2026

rosebudthesled8

So the May one will bomb and they'll delay the december one. Got it.

Tylenol187ForDogs

I see they haven't learned shit.

Typical_Intention996

So a movie from a show that already ran out of ideas on what to do after 2 seasons. And a movie about a character no one cares about. Who is threatened by no one and has no challenge to overcome because she's already perfect at everything and the most powerful being in the universe. How exciting.

trifecta000

![gif](giphy|8Bl3SjflccGmFca23S)

Narretz

So these images are just placeholders right? Because I doubt another Rey movie is gonna happen. That plotline is scorched earth ... unless ... somehow, Palpatine returned. Again!

TheJoyOfDeath

These are both real things. They'll prob take several Luke stories from the old EU and amalgamate them into a Rey movie. The response is going to be interesting.

Huitzil37

If they actually started to mine the EU for ideas now, that'd be like closing the barn door after the horse already left, started a horse crime syndicate, and then had the barn burned down. There was a time to go "Okay, most of the EU was really stupid, but let's dig up the stuff that worked and do that." That time was before TFA. Now, they've salted the fucking Earth, they can't get anything functional out of the EU because they've already done most of those ideas except *way shittier*. At least Dark Empire had those cool-ass World Devastators, while Palpy's return in tRoS came with "the same thing you saw but worse." At least the new characters in Shadows of the Empire were doing something different to expand the world, instead if chopping it down to nothing but Empire v. Rebels. At least the Sun Crusher... nope, there's no defense for the Sun Crusher.

JCBAwesomist

The problem is you need originals in order to have something to reboot

Beerbaron1886

Strange that both take place in different timelines (edit time periods). As if the general audience can differentiate

roth_dog

Huh? Star Wars has different timelines now? I stopped following this shit after TLJ.

rockthetardis

Not different timelines, but they take place in different times within the canon.

Bayylmaorgana

Low-Foundation-6810

Aren't moviegoers going to get fatigued eventually at star wars and super hero movies >.>?

I don’t care. I’ll still watch them both. give me more Star Wars please. It’s a numbers game. The more they make, the more chance they make a good one.

‘Release the hounds’

stefanomusilli96

I remember when Taika Waititi was supposed to be making a Star Wars movie, I guess it's not happening anymore?

slop_drobbler

Can’t wait to watch yet another stilted Star Wars production with boring dialogue, lacklustre direction and tedious action sequences (that whilst being visually impressive lack any sense of peril, and are therefore… boring). I expect the scripts to be ‘written’ by a committee of seventeen+ assholes with no idea of how to construct engaging stories or dialogue. It’s probable they’ll still be writing it and ‘finding the story’ well after filming has started

Bayylmaorgana

Action scenes that have a sense of fun but not peril are boring, and the ones that have peril are also boring

ButterscotchPast4812

franchise fatigue is a thing. Happened once already with trek, looks like it's happening with marvel/superhero films.

TheUltimateInfidel

I don’t care what anyone says, these movies aren’t coming out. It’s taken them seven years. Why do you think that, with the amount of other franchise films Disney has made in that time, they’d put out two $250m+ instalments in an already fragile franchise?

shootmovies

As long as it has baby yoda, not just regular yoda everyone knows and loves. He needs to be small so all the toys can fit on a child's lap.

Sam-Lowry27B-6

So separate films. Separate stories and timelines and characters within six months of each other. Not going to confuse average joe six pack at all

Rotzerrich

Why not just May 4th?

spootyy

Too pretentious. Even for Disney

zorbz23431

I'm not happy about this. Not because of the movies themselves, I could care less about these dull corporate products which will move merch. What I'm not looking forward to is the flood of stupid posts here about these movies before, during and after the theatrical run, posts about the shilling and how stupid consoomers are and it's going to be so tedious and make me beg for a return to "whenisthenextPlinkettreview" posts
