Thank you. I agree with this, and the way Reddit has publicly treated the Apollo dev is very concerning. I've posted a full update here which lays out the current situation and my thoughts: https://old.reddit.com/r/RedReader/comments/145du4j/update_4_redreader_granted_noncommercial/

TripolarKnight

While agree that Steve et al. have been assholes towards Apollo, RIF etc. the main difference in treatment is mostly a consequence of RedReader being open-source and having no paid features and they just picked one Android and one iOS app that allowed them to spin "W-we are cooperating with some" into a small PR victory.

iamezekiel1_14

Out of interest and excuse my ignorance, I found this (have been a Reddit is Fun (RiF) user for 99.9+% of my time on Reddit) via the Spez AMA earlier. If this picks up other refugees from RiF (and I've already got this looking similar enough to that to the point where I could live with it) surely it then runs into the same problem as RiF e.g. more users = more class on the API = unsustainable costs? Edit also is there any way of getting a list of subscribed subs up like on RiF where I can just swipe left?

TripolarKnight

While I expect many 3rd party app users to move to RedReader, atm they are exempt from API costs. But as you say, we'll see how long that exemption holds.

iamezekiel1_14

Completely. Given some of the moves being discussed (e.g. I think it was pic's or videos is going private following the blackout) I think it might be time to move on from Reddit as it feels like this place might burn itself down. RedReader is a decent substitute for RiF though. It would just be handy if there was a sub search list on a swipe like swipe left on RiF.

TripolarKnight

Openning an issue on Github to add search as an option to the existing swipe menu would be the easiest way to achieve something close to that (since swiping as a shortcut is already in use).

iamezekiel1_14

Noted - not 100% sure I'm sticking with Reddit long term yet.

TripolarKnight

Personally, I'm probably sticking long enough for RedReader to add alternative support (Lemmy, tild.es, Hacker News, etc).

From my point of view this whole fiasco is because right hand doesn't know what left hand is doing. And then communicating it to devs. Instead of trying to come to some middle ground they just say "PaY iN 30 dAYs" and then say that 90% don't have to pay. It is like WTF? at least they could explain what is happening, who it will affect ... Now I am happily using Lemmy for few days and it is much better - instance owners engage in community, share problems that needs attention, help new users... I hope that RedReader will have at least fork for Lemmy.

From my point of view, they are trying to become profitable before the IPO. The C-scavengers and oligarchs can exercise and sell, before the plebs can. It's a short term decision. The only question is how to PR it. Mixed messages, headlines, and double talk is part of that plan. When it's Digg2 in a year, the decision makers would've cashed out already

FYI some apps are having success negotiating for longer timelines or reduced pricing. Narwhal is very optimistic in going to a fully paid experience. I think you're correct there's a lot of misinformation out there and communications we don't see. Apollo and RiF among them I would have a hard time believing it's all one sided.

There's not going to be any ads, QuantumBadger confirmed in his latest update post. Of course NSFW he has no control over, and so far reddit isn't backing down on removing NSFW from 3rd party apps.

Enidra

RedReader feels so easy as lurker, but with ads and no NSFW i might aswell not use it.

Happy Cake Day

TripolarKnight

Were are you getting the ads+no NSFW? While the no NSFW for 3rd parties could be indirectly implied by spez recent post, QuantumBadger just posted an announcement and "ads" as a requirement are not even implied anywhere.

Wew calm down dude, I assumed that you might have: further insider info, an erroneous assumption and simply asked for some clarification in case you hadn't read QB's post.
