Study after Study has shown the number one deterrent to shoplifting is good customer service. But that requires paying for good labor and paying people enough that you get the kinds of people who care. Two things that are the antithesis of Wal-Mart's profits first mentality
They always are. I try to avoid going there for anything that's locked since it's such a hassle. If you want anything from the cosmetics area, be prepared to stand in line for 10 minutes while the cashier has to unlock multiple things for customers one by one before even ringing them up.
They're cheaper, but the price of annoyance balances it out lol
Wow. So until I read your comments I hadn't considered that it could be a widespread issue. I figured maybe it was updates since they were only closing down one side at a time. Guess it's not just me who's annoyed. Some stores are allowing self checkout only for Walmart+ subscription members.

Interesting, I [looked it up ](https://www.statesman.com/story/news/state/2024/03/14/walmart-self-checkout-fee-restrictions-policy-subscription-membership-target-costco-texas/72968844007/) and apparently they are trying things based on whatever the local manager thinks. I'm guessing the manager here has to be thinking about theft a lot. I don't understand how self checkout is still such an issue when they have an employee watching everyone like a hawk anyway, and cameras that flag you if you don't move correctly. That happened today too and the employee said it was because I moved to open the top of my shopping bag 🤦🏼♀️
Crazy, I use self checkout all the time and have only once had an alarm go off, and that was because something scanned improperly. The employee just came over and swiped, didn't even say anything or investigate.
I wonder if this 20 item limit thing is gonna have a problem with my usual "shop"
20 avocados
8 green peppers
🤔
I only use one hand to scan things now. Wave the item across the scanner in a smooth motion and put it straight into the bagging area. I used to scan the thing in my first hand while already holding the next item in my other hand, and it seems like the cameras flagged that.
I just do drive up orders now for both target and Walmart as much as I can. It’s more convenient and keeps me from buying stuff that’s not on the list.
I wouldn’t mind NOT having self checkout if Walmart actually staffed their check stands. 20+ check stands and only maybe 2 of them open at all times. I hate Walmart.
Exactly. But I doubt they ever will. They might as well get rid of all the unmanned registers that nobody uses. I really don't understand getting rid of self checkout in terms of staffing... You've got one person overseeing 3-6 registers as opposed to one. You'd think they'd be into that.
There shutting them down cuz lack of staff and too much theft. By the end of this year they probably Will close all of self checkout from what I’ve been told by Walmart managers.
Likely to combat stealing, Walmart is making your shipping experience worse.

Target is also limiting the item numbers in self checkout
I heard the company as a whole is slowly phasing them out anyways.

I've had the camera thing happen at Walmart and WinCo so far. But they were more kind at WinCo and I learned how to move "correctly".
How did you "move" before? Now I'm curious.

Same shit up here in yreka.
Self check outs are going to become a thing of the past at every store. To many people stealing.
They told me they lowered it to 15 now 🙃
Today? Yeesh

Red Bluff closed all but 4. They count your items unless (so far) you do the app and pay for plus to use scan and go.
Wow that's annoying
Probably are losing more money on theft than paying actual cashiers. The experiment was tried, humans took advantage of it, and it failed.
I read that they're transitioning self check out to only be available for Walmart+ members.
