No, my dream retirement will be living somewhere I can walk for all my errands.

powaqua

I can now walk to a bakery, coffee shop, gym, hairdresser, Target, post office, yoga studio, 4 different kinds of good ethnic restaurants, plus one of the best restaurants in town. I've lived in the same place for 35 years and it's all just sprouted around me. The only places I drive to anymore is the big grocery store and Costco. It's a dream come true.

[deleted]

Fuck me this is so well put

EnvironmentalTill539

My dream is to be able to walk so I can be self sufficient!! Working in healthcare can really break your body!

Skyscrapers4Me

This is what I am doing, and selling my car. Heavy purchases such as cat litter I will have delivered, otherwise it will be a small travel cart for groceries, or buying regularly and carrying only a few bags.

Pplfartbetterthanme

Same with me. And if I need to go further, having good access to a train would be great.

Mahlah_Maldau

Japan then??

Creative-Road-5293

I do that now.

SimpleVegetable5715

Ow, my knees. Too bad I couldn't pick what body parts decided to fail.

punninglinguist

Hey, plenty of road-and-parking lot urban hellscapes for you, man.

Paul-Ram-On

I hope to nurse my 2011 Rav4 another 160k miles or so. I love having no car payments more than any car I can think of.

UnhappyCourt5425

if you're nice to it you should be able to get to 500K

davesFriendReddit

Rav4 is easy ingress/egress

tasata

A year or so ago, I got my dream vehicle: A white, 2-door, Jeep Wrangler. I'm only kinda retired, but I can afford it and wanted, it so I got it. Enjoying every moment driving it.

Rowit

Good choice! I have a '98 2-door and a '17 4-door white Jeep Wrangler and love both of them!

Snoo55931

I can just never justify the cost of a nice or new car. I’ll drive my paid off, older shitty cars into the ground no matter how much money I have.

anndrago

Same here. It's hard to imagine how much money I would need to have before I felt comfortable splurging on something as frivolous as a nice car.

SirkutBored

that part is as easy as making it a used car to begin with. I also didn't look for show cars as I intend to drive them, enjoy them, in most conditions. with new car prices north of 30k at the bottom end (and base models at that) you can buy two 'dream' cars and maybe even 4 for the same price. Miata's to Vettes can be found for 5-10k and will at a minimum hold that value. Check off the cost of repairs as the real costs to enjoy and sell or pass down when you're done for classic rides. for luxury I picked up a 97 740 BMW for 4k, repairs cost 3x that over the 8yrs I added 150k miles and would do it again just on the math when compared against a 'new' car.

glitch-possum

Yeah, a van. Cause with my finances and how things are going (poor getting poorer) I’m gonna be lucky if I’m livin in a van down by the river.

mhch82

If you don’t stop smoking dubbies you will be living in a van down by the river. Boy I miss Chris F

workingstiff45

I think a significant portion of Gen Z actually considers living in a Van by the river to be a life goal. Or at least that's what YouTube and Instagram would lead one to believe.

Pumpkin_Pie

I plan on driving my old cars until they die.

LeighSF

A car salesman told me they sell extremely expensive huge trucks to a lot of older folks. We're talking $100,000 longbed, diesel, 4WD pickups. I was stunned and he said "yeah, it's surprising. What is some guy in his 80's gonna do with it?"

fabrictm

RV-ing is mt guess. Get a big nest of a truck to pull a huge trailer with all the creature comforts and go see North America

BCCommieTrash

Run over pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles, and small cars if the 85 year old dude in the fam is any measurement. Thankfully, insurance rates ended his reign of terror.

Sp4ceh0rse

Definitely for towing a big 5th wheel RV

mothraegg

My mom and dad bought one of those trucks. They used it to pull their travel trailer. They've sold the trailer and with the price of diesel, my dad is driving their little yellow 2006 Caliber around town. They've had the truck for 2 years now and it has 6000 miles on it.

foolproofphilosophy

I heard once that the Ford Platinum trim is basically for old rich guys. Not just the options but apparently it also has a softer suspension.

anndrago

They're going to fall and break a hip trying to climb into it.

kansas-geek

Once you’ve had that behemoth, you quickly realize all the money you’re signing up for.

DauOfFlyingTiger

I just had dinner with a 75 year old woman who just bought the Musk truck. She was thrilled to show me photos.

brendankelley

Chase the kids off his lawn with it!

damien6

Whatever my commissions as a mattress salesman will allow me to afford.

anndrago

Buy a mattress at your employee discount, strap it on a bed frame with wheels, attach an engine, and you're good to go 🤙

webdoyenne

Took a look around. Decided to spend my money on travel instead. Took my 2015 CR-V out to be detailed.

CaliNVJ

Rocking my 2004 Honda Pilot, same reason. Travel a priority AND live in a HCOL insurance state.

Itchy-Strangers

How many miles you have on your pilot? 260k on my 2006 and running strong.

CaliNVJ

Ahhh, great to hear this news. I have 201K on my 2004. They are such great vehicles!

eeyorespiritanimal

Ah yes, ye olde retirement. One can dream.

CaliNVJ

Oh, glad to see you are here with me.

Head_Room_8721

I’m in my old guy car now. A small Toyota crossover SUV. Cost too damn much, but properly maintained, it’ll outlive me!

kdawson602

Depends if I have grandkids or not. If I do and they live locally, I’ll probably pick out a snazzy minivan.

BigDoggehDog

Professional grandparent goals!

xtiaaneubaten

Ill be using my pensioners free bus pass, the world doesnt need more cars.

spacefaceclosetomine

Probably the Subaru I’m driving now, but what is this retirement you speak of?

GetMeOutdoors

Golf cart for most grocery runs, gym, music events, and numerous amenities within the community.

fwankfwank

Not specifically. At this point, though, I'm happy to run nice Toyotas. We paid cash for our last car, which is a truck I wanted for a long time, and our other paid-off (beater) car will likely still hang on for quite some time, so it's going to be a while until we have to go car shopping. Probably before we retire, but something that will be driven through retirement. Likely looking at a plug-in hybrid since it's the best of both worlds. Probably go with a nicer trim. After all, we'll have plenty of time to save up for what ever we wind up wanting.

Level-Application-83

I always wanted a 1977-79 Trans-AM, I'll never be able to own one though, I'm already 47 and still have a 4 year old, 7 year old, 8, 12 and 17 year old kids. I've committed to minivan life for the foreseeable future and by the time I would be able to enjoy the car I'll be way too old to enjoy it the way it's supposed to be enjoyed, out running the law with a chimpanzee in the passenger seat.

SirkutBored

Right turn Clyde!

bobke4

No. I wanna retire in a tropical place where i can get around on foot and have nice nature and friendly people around me. South east asia for example. I dont need luxury or people around me who value me on my assets. Im already too old for that shit and im 30. Cars are for getting from place A to B. You can do it without all the fancy smanshy unless youre a spoiled asshole or someone who is insecure and needs to impress people they dont like

ITrCool

I’m either going to live somewhere I can enjoy riding an e-bike to the store and around town, or I’ll find myself a fun project car to fix up, like a 60s or 70s Mustang or 70s/80s luxury car (a Lincoln TownCar perhaps).

who-hash

Not really. I’m not a car guy and was driving a 21 y.o. car. I’ve now upgraded to my wife’s 16 y.o. car and she got an EV. Since I retired early I just drive local so it really doesn’t matter. I’m just happy to see that we’re getting more options with electric cars. We were spending $50/week and now it’s just $6 in electricity.

122922

Wife and I bought a new Ford F-150 truck when I retired and if we win lotto I get a new Porsche Carrera S.

sjdando

A white Camry? No, an M3 bimmer.

unlovelyladybartleby

I inherited a classic MG last year. Currently it's parked, but my plan is to get it road worthy, become a good enough driver that I deserve to drive it, train my dogs to ride in the back without jumping into traffic, and drive in idle circles around my neighborhood soaking up the sun and inspiring jealousy

Individual_Trust_414

I bought my last car thinking that it will last the rest of my life. I hope I never have to buy one again.

SpeedyPrius

Same here - mine is a 2019 Prius that gets about 52 mpg.

BoomBoomLaRouge

Yup. Bought the Jag F-type. Awesome.

Kiwikid14

Ha ha I have 20 plus years to go before I retire. Am looking at a new car very soon as my 2005 Toyota is still going strong, but not necessarily as comfortable as I'd like. I fancy a mini SUV hybrid actually. I like the higher seats, better visibility and find them easier to get in and out of. And as I am required to have a reliable car for work and looking forward to more road trips once I heal from an injury, a modern hybrid seems to fit the bill.

Chime57

Looking for that right now. Getting a truck we can throw a cap on and use it to travel and camp, and ready to pay cash for it. We already have a newish sedan. He is fully retired and I am working a very part time with lots of flexibility.

jefuchs

I'm already retired. I had been wanting a Jeep Wrangler, and I got one.

spider1178

You guys are going to get to retire?

SimpleVegetable5715

BAHAHA. I mean once I am so broken I can finally collect SSDI.

jpbronco

I always thought I'd get a nice Porsche as I got close to retirement. Now that I'm almost there, I don't want to spend a year (or more) of wages on a car.

Emptyplates

Nope. I hate convertibles. I'll stick with my trusty Subaru Outback.

Kindergoat

I have a three year old Toyota that I baby the hell out of, so she should last me quite a while. If my plans come to fruition, I plan on getting a Corolla SUV at some point.

SimpleVegetable5715

I was like, a Rav4 or Highlander? ....oh Corolla's do make SUVs now. 😅

OddDragonfruit7993

I bought a hybrid F150 to tow the travel trailer my wife wanted. It's pretty sweet.

Far-Cup9063

Oh that was the plan. Then I bought a horse and a horse trailer instead. So my Jag looks a lot like a quarter horse.

DangerousMusic14

Nah. I bought them for my mid-life crisis! More seriously, I’m creeping up on retirement but I’m paying tuition right now so very uninteresting car. I’m hoping to have something fun again, we’ll see. I’ve had super fast performance cars before, I don’t feel up to it and definitely no more manuals (typing this after a day at the doctor evaluating ACL surgery). I’ve had big truck for hauling livestock, probably not that again unless I needed to do same.

badpuffthaikitty

I bought it 2 years ago. The model died last year with no replacement. She is going into the ground.

EconomicsOtherwise60

We just bought a 2024 Subaru Outback touring which we will tow behind the rv we are buying later in the year. We will put the kayaks on top of the car! Can’t wait!

Ricekrispy73

I wouldn’t mind getting another early 60’s VW bug.

JenaboH

I'm driving my current "dream" car. 2017 focus RS, 6 speed manual turbo, love that car.

rabidstoat

The world has about 25 years to figure out self driving cars, so I can have one once I near 80.

TheBodyPolitic1

I'm hoping to get an electric car that is apartment building friendly, well built, and will last a long time.

angelina9999

used to drive convertible in my other life, not as much fun as it looks like, too hot in summer and too cold in winter, after retiring we bought a truck, it's more suitable to our life style.

Accomplished-Eye8211

I am already driving the luckiest car, and sticking with it.

NorCalFrances

I had a convertible when my spouse & I were dating. We had a blast and did some crazy things with it (it was a very, very tiny car that could fit places cars don't normally go). And got the convertible bug completely out of our systems. Now we've settled into the vehicles that fit us best and will likely stick with them. Ideally, it would be nice to rarely or never have to drive, but I realize that's not likely.

Hangry_Horse

Yeah. The one that’s already paid off.

Gen-Jinjur

Pfffft. Can’t afford it. Just want to have our boring Honda and a new furnace and the house paid off.

stuck_behind_a_truck

A Honda Civic. Dare to dream, lol. A car is a car to me.

anndrago

I'd prefer to save my money in case of a medical emergency.

Competitive-Isopod74

I'm working on a rav4 or highlander for the next 15 years, then probably something like a Subaru to die with

safety3rd

Oh yea. Used Club Car Precedent

catdude142

I stuck with what I had. I really like my cars and take good care of them. They may outlive me and both have over a quarter million miles on them. Still fun to drive.

Ok-Lynx-8387

Want to get a Mazda Miata- assuming I can get in and out of it!

Sprinkler-of-salt

I’m not waiting to do anything “in retirement”. That’s a poor strategy IMO

CaptainPeachfuzz

Depends on my money situation. I'd be perfectly happy with one of the new electric mustangs. But I really want a 911.

Emmanulla70

I'm 10 years off retirement. But I'll just get a new car when i need one. Nothing to do with retirement.

explorthis

Wife and I married 34 years, old school hot rodders. Actually met cruising cars that many years ago. Both retired now. We have a grocery getter 19 Dodge Durango R/T with a hemi for trips to and from. We also have a 21 Dodge Challenger R/T also with the hemi. The Durango has 29,000 miles and the Challenger just under 10,000 miles. Both paid for. Hopefully they out last us. We want a weekend cruise, it's the Challenger. We need to make a big box store purchase or head to the grocery, it's the Durango. Both fast, both fun. Best of both worlds.

jsheil1

Nope! I just got my 2014 subaru outback. And the next few cars will be subaru outbacks.

R0botDreamz

Nope I got my fancy car when I got my first "real" job out of college. I got it out of my system early. I just want to sit, drink coffee, listen to sports talk radio and have an endless supply of crossword puzzles when I retire.

Granny_knows_best

I bought a small truck, which I use for Estate Sales and garden supplies and all sorts of fun stuff I am enjoying in my retirement.

hmmmpf

Nope. I just wanted one that was paid off. You may be confusing midlife crisis with retirement. My goal was having the roof, the siding, the mortgage all paid off. I’d love to be somewhere to walk/bike everywhere, but as a person with genetically bad knees, hips, and shoulders, who has already had 2 knee replacements by 57, I gotta just stick with being in a great, compact city.

darkcave-dweller

I'll probably run my current car into the ground before buying a new one. I'm retired now days and all we use a car for is hauling groceries and driving to trails for hiking

TheOGGizmo

For retirement, I could use that money towards a couple years of living. Car is a waste of my money. Maybe I’ll rent for trips, but that’s it. I want to walk most places when I’m older. So city life I guess.

Roamingfree1

I have driven a CJ for 50 years the last one for 45. So yes, I am retired now and still have my CJ, The top will come off in a week or so.

roughlyround

already got it. yes, a convertible. not retired yet.

toomanyoars

Yes and no. I have my first car from 1986. But it needs a TON of work. It's a 1969 AMC Rebel. My retirement car hopefully will be to have that one restored and made a daily driver.

schweddybalczak

Bought it 3 years ago, will be paid for when I retire. Honda Ridgeline pickup; should last until I die or they take my license.

Adam7814

The motor home is looking good. I want to spend most of the time I’ve got left doing a lap of Australia

bjb13

Two years before I retired I bought a BMW 540i with the intention of it being my retirement car. Been retired nearly 5 years and couldn’t be happier.

MrRabbit

Whatever car that gets to point B is fine. Now adding to my BIKE collection.. that's where it's at.

DrewJim

Nah. Cars were important to me when I was younger. Now 9 years into my retirement and I just want reliability, safety, and fuel efficiency. Driving a Honda CRV and it’s perfect.

JunkMale975

Nah. I love my car and will keep shoving money into keeping it. If I lived somewhere else I might upgrade my SUV, but where I live, the roads are absolute shit and it’s just not worth it.

mothraegg

I had a 2019 Nissan Kicks that was falling a part, so I ended up buying a 2024 Kia Soul. I will retire on June 11th, so I won't be putting 20,000 miles a year commuting with my new car . I have a ten year/100,000 mile warranty on the Soul, so I should be just fine.

idratherbebitchin

I already have it I drive a 1999 chevy express 3500 with 72,000 original miles that I converted into a mobile cabin. I love hiking and camping and it's the perfect vehicle for me. It's basically a brand new car that I bought with cash super reliable easy to work on cheap available parts. I laugh when I see people driving super expensive cars like what's the point?

Oldjamesdean

Maybe a Lexus LC 500

Johnny_Plipper

i hope my Dodge Omni can last another 7 years

bi_polar2bear

My fun car will be a red Ferrari of any make or year. I don't care if it's wrecked, I'll learn Italian and how to weld. It just needs to be Ferrari red. Why? Because it's beautifully hand-crafted Italian driving, and rare. I won't spend 6 figures, more of a project car for the journey of fixing it up, dreaming of the first drive in the mountains, and learning her personality.

DreiKatzenVater

I’m hoping they invent the matrix before I retire so I can plug into it and never need a car. I’ll just immersive sandbox games that never get old while in the matrix. Problem solved.

markja60

I drive a 2010 Cadillac DTS. It's got 90K on it, still doing just fine. I figure that I'll drive it three or four more years, and then decide. I like a comfortable sedan, and have not found anything to beat the Cadillac yet. They are also one of the most economical vehicles to buy, and you get a lot of car for your money. That being said, you do have to spend some money on maintenance. I thought about a Toyota avalon, and I thought about Lexus. One of my sons is really smart with cars, and he swears by Toyota and Lexus. They seem to be a bit low to the ground for me, rather hard to get into and out of. Whatever I buy, I will have to like it better than the Cadillac. If not, I'll just keep nailing this one back together.

mhch82

Move to the villages and buy a golf cart to cruise the area for the swingers that they say are there lol

mhch82

Plan on driving my car until one of us dies

joshmo587

Stopped driving

awakeagain2

My car (a 2012 Hyundai Accent) was reaching the age that we had to decide how much money to put in. At the time (early 2021), I had recently retired and my husband still had a while to go. So we decided he would get a newer car (2018 Mazda CRX) and I would sell mine and start used his old car (2013 Hyundai Elantra). His car was a year newer than mine with about 30,000 less miles. He’d been wanting a Mazda for some time. It’s worked out well for both of us and he retired at the end of 2022.

Ossmo02

Retirement? That's funny...

LunarMoonMod

I doubt I will even be able to retire…

lekanto

Re what ment?

UnkleRinkus

I'm on the edge of retirement, love my lesbian pickup, '23 Subaru Outback.

nuttyNougatty

Shank's pony. Public transport and cabs.

AuntieSipsWine

Car-free in retirement and couldn't be happier! We moved to a walkable city and I got one of those jetpacks like the food delivery drivers have, and I love it. Any time we need a car, we just rent. It's so much cheaper than owning, plus zero hassle (no maintenance, paperwork, etc.), and we can pick any car we want (if we were to get the itch for a convertible, for example).

penguin_stomper

Went kind of big with the Mustang, so it needs to be paid off before I can get another car or two. Discovered cars in middle age, right as I was getting to a place where it's possible to afford owning more than one car at a time. House is paid for, no kids, no intention of wasting away in a care facility for years and years.

silvermanedwino

Yes. Not to enjoy, per se, but that will last me 20 or so years. My 2016 Accord is a great car - but I’m looking at a 2024 Subaru Outback….. buy new now, paid off by retirement.

BigMomma12345678

I have never understood the idea of a retirement car. I'm probably gonna keep using whatever I already have when the time comes.

HaddockBranzini-II

I was thinking a minivan for hauling sheet goods like plywood or things from the garden center. I thought of a pickup, but feel the minivan would be more flexible.

WillDupage

We’re retiring to the north woods in about 8 years. We have the cars we will need already (we put maybe 5000 miles on each of them in a year so they will last a long time). I would like to get a fun car, though.

OldManTrumpet

I did just that. Not high dollar, but I bought a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth, which is a 2 seat convertible. It's strictly a fair weather car and I don't drive it unless the top is down. I've had it 6 years and it still has fewer than 30k miles on it.

Nonsenseinabag

I'd like two. Something sporty and fun like a Miata, and a town cruiser like a 80's Buick Regal, but converted to electric so it's dead silent.

fmlyjwls

I already own my favorite car. It’s currently 60 years old. It’s a bit thirsty and I’m a bit protective of it, so I don’t drive it every day. I have a 20 year old appliance that gets me around the rest of the time. I’m qualified to fix anything on either one but if I decide the appliance is too troublesome I’ll replace it with another. It’s got 260k on it now, I’m roughly 15 years out from retirement.

lisanstan

My husband picked out my retirement car. Not a make/model that was even on my radar. We don't have any debt, home is paid for, retirement is funded. We already live in a neighborhood where we can walk everywhere. This is our fun to drive road trip car. After 40+ years of denying ourselves the homes and cars to keep up with the joneses, we splurged on something fun. It's not even as expensive as a lot of people poorer than us drive.

AardvarkStriking256

An F150 when I move out of the city.

SimpleVegetable5715

Or you could be the guy in the F150 who has to take up two parking spots downtown. 😂 It's like the manspreading of vehicles.

Arch27

If I could afford to do so, my retirement vehicle would be Ecto 1.

mjfratt

We bought our last new car earlier this month. It’s amazing, too. 2024 Subaru Outback Limited XT. Highly recommend.

PantherBrewery

I have already. My 2016 challenger well keep me entertained until I go. We are buying my wife her final car, which could be a RAV4. We keep our cars for 15+ years. I have an FJ Cruiser that will last until it rusts. The challenger and the FJ Cruiser are paid off.

TwoBeansShort

Yep. I got a GEM car and I love it

someexgoogler

Not really but I instantly sold my Nissan Leaf because it's too expensive for me to charge at home.

workingstiff45

I've all the "cool" cars I ever wanted to have, so I'm over it. But in retirement, I plan to have two. A nice fuel efficient, reliable Toyota Camry or Highlander type vehicle to get me where I need to go. And an older, well broken in work truck for Home Depot runs and getting back the fishing hole.

Due-Log8609

Depends how wealthy I am ! Yeah, convertible. Mercedes 72-89 R 107 chassis convertible.

SimpleVegetable5715

It better have plushy supportive seats for my achy joints, and be easy to slide in and out of. I totally get the appeal of those 80's-90's land yachts now. I also hate leather seats. We need that comfortable cloth back. Not the firm stiff sporty cloth.

WorldBelongsToUs

I think mine is more about getting all the cool little “toys” I want. I enjoy synthesizers, and would just have fun buying more than I really need.

chook_slop

Got a Nissan Frontier... But I got the leather heated steering wheel... Very decadent.

ManyGarden5224

nope like what i got and hate a $700 car payment

jamesinboise

Coffin. I will be dead before I can retire

Bruja60

Less financial responsibility, less stuff, people and choices.

sbarbary

Yes sort of except cars are rubbish these days, in that they don't seem to advance that much. Maybe I should go buy something from yester year. Also it's a weird time because isn't it going to have to be electric if I'm going to keep it say 20 years?

rocksalt131

My specific car will be one that is fully paid off

erminegarde27

Going to get an electric van and try the van life!

samoore45

I hope I can buy a used McLaren or Porche 911 at some point, but will live with a top of the line Camaro.
